Bodega Colome

September 11, 2017

Friends, we journey south to Argentina today, focusing on one of the great estates in the Southern Hemisphere. Bodega Colome is located in the Calchaqui Valley, 2300 meters (7500 feet) above sea level, in the northwest region of Argentina. Founded in 1831, it is one of the oldest existing wineries in Argentina. In 2001, it was acquired by the Hess Family Estates. The wines are grown in the highest vineyards in the world (7218-10,207 feet above sea level). The high elevation contributes to the tension in the wines.

One of the best Torrontes wines out there, the 2016 Bodega Colome Torrontes (WWB, 93) has wonderful poise and salinity. This is a stunning value by Colome. Check out their 2014 Bodega Colome ‘Estate’ Malbec (WWB, 93) which shows gorgeous richness and texture. Learn more about these outstanding wines at http://www.bodegacolome.com/homepage/ Here are thew outstanding new wines by Colome.

2016 Bodega Colome Torrontes- Crisp, complex and clean, this is one of the better Torrontes bottling that you will find. Peach, tangerine blossom and gardenia aromatics coat the glass. The nose is beautifully feminine and shows great character. There is a wonderful salinity and structure to the wine that shows white peach, white flower, lemon zest and green apple flavors. This wine has an unctuous mouthfeel, showing off an oily texture. This memorable bottling is best enjoyed over the next four years. Drink 2017-2021- 93

2015 Bodega Colome ‘Authentico’ Malbec- This great wine was sourced from old Malbec vines. This Malbec was aged for 11 months in stainless steel and never was aged in oak. Mocha, cloves, blueberry compote and mint aromatics show their style. The beautiful aromatics continually bring you back to the glass for more. Balanced and beautifully weighted, this shows blackberry pie, mocha and creme de cassis flavors with Turkish coffee accents. This will be a long ager. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2014 Bodega Colome ‘Estate’ Malbec- Dense and brooding, this intense wine begins with bright aromatics of mocha, milk chocolate and creme de cassis with sandalwood accents. Plush and downright delicious, this wine shows off Turkish coffee, dark chocolate shavings, tar and clove flavors that sit alongside some great structure. Tannic, massive and powerful, this beautiful wine is best enjoyed over the next decade. Drink 2017-2027- 93
