Clos Mogador

December 9, 2019

Some of the great wines from Spain come from Priorat, a mountainous, utterly remote part of this country. I had such a wonderful visit to this historic region a few years back and was captivated by the rocky terrain and the terroir in the glass. Clos Mogador is one of the famed estates from Priorat. Even in the most challenging vintages, this wine impresses. I have been blown away with the past few releases of this wine. It is a Priorat that has incredible elegance, yet maintains bright acidity and has good power. Simply put, there is not a wine made like this in the world.

Winemaker René Barbier studied in Bordeaux and Burgundy before descending on Priorat some fifteen years back. He also previously worked at the famed Chateau Petrus before coming to Priorat. He is one of the famed winemakers of the region and his attention to detail shows in the glass. His vineyards are set on steep slopes with set on largely shale. The vineyards are set near the sea, so there is a wonderful saline streak to them that connects with the red fruits and marvelous tension. There is really no wine like this in the world.

The wine comes from an the 2016 vintage in Priorat and the 2016 Clos Mogador (WWB, 95) has everything you want in this style of wine with its err of tension that deftly combines with the power from its Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a wine that captures the art of blending. If enjoying young, be sure to give this beauty a two plus hour decant. 2016 Clos Mogador Red Wine- The 2016 Clos Mogador is a stunning new wine by this storied Priorat estate perched high in the Priorat hills. A blend of 49% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine shows off a deep core in the glass. Needing roughly an hour decant to be fully aroused, the wine slowly unveils ripe rose petals that mingle with bright orange zest and shades of black plum that all march in place in the glass. The texture and supple mouthfeel really entices as you are immediately greeted with wonderful bright acidity and a saline streak that races through the mid-palate. Layers of red and dark fruits collide with smoky and earthy undertones on the palate. Quite lithe and primary now, the 2016 Clos Mogador will provide drinking enjoyment for decades to come.
