Historic Champagne house, Piper-Heidseick was founded in Reims, France, on July 16, 1785, by German-born cloth merchant and self-taught winemaker Florens-Louis Heidsieck. Founder Florens-Louis Heidsieck created a special cuvée and presented it personally to Queen Marie-Antoinette, earning the house early royal favor.
For years this house has served as the official champagne of the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards (Oscars). It was also a favorite of Marylyn Monroe. Formerly owned by Owned by the Hériard-Dubreuil family (Rémy Cointreau group) starting in 1988, the house was acquired in 2011 by EPI, a French luxury holding group led by Christopher Descours.
The house also has holdings in Sonoma, producing some nice values. I really enjoyed the NV Piper Sonoma ‘Brut Rose’ (OB, 90) which is soft and approachable now. Check out the marvelous NV Piper-Heidsieck Essentiel Blanc de Noirs (OB, 94) which comes off fat and delicious on the tongue with outstanding flavor density. NV Piper-Heidsieck Essentiel Blanc de Noirs- Standing golden in the glass, the NV Piper-Heidsieck Essentiel Blanc de Noirs was disgorged back in March 2023. Dense fig and red raspberry fruits combine with Marzipan and shades of brioche on the palate. This is seriously good stuff with loads of salty minerals, that is drinking marvelously now.
