Kevin White Winery

October 3, 2017

A relatively new Woodinville Winery, Kevin White Winery was founded in 2010. Since that time Kevin has been crafting great Washington wines inspired by the Rhone Valley. After Kevin was first moved by a great wine in 2006 he sought to gain a more formal background, taking classes in chemistry, microbiology and enology. Kevin started making his wines at nearby Baer before opening his tasting room in the warehouse district of Woodinville. His wines are a downright killer value in Washington.

I recently had the chance to sit down with him and check out his new releases from the warm 2014 and 2015 vintages. These are serious wines that show a wonderful combination of warm Washington fruit and old world minerality. Look to the 2015 Kevin White ‘En Hommage’ Syrah (WWB, 93) which is a silky effort that shows wonderful range and persistence. Just as good was the outstanding 2014 Kevin White ‘DuBrul Vineyard Heritage’ Red Wine (WWB, 93) which is sourced from one of the state’s premier vineyards and shows a wonderful Bordelaise herbaceousness and a killer plush mouthfeel. Learn more about these outstanding wines at https://www.kevinwhitewinery.com Here are the great new wines by Kevin White.

2015 Kevin White ‘La Fraternite’ Red Wine- This outstanding wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 33% Mourvedre and 7% Syrah which was sourced from the Boushey and Upland Vineyards. The wine saw lengthy battonage. The wine begins with intense aromatics of rose petals, pipe tobacco and red cherry. This has a gorgeous texture and a silky mouthfeel. The wine delivers ripe red fruit flavors with nutmeg, blood orange rind and a lengthy finish. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2015 Kevin White ‘En Hommage’ Syrah- The inky colored Syrah was aged in 10% new French oak prior to bottling. The wine opens with smoky aromatics of smoked pork shoulder, sagebrush, crushed mint and black olive tapenade. The wine has some sterling minerality as this almost passes for Northern Rhone. Bulls blood, black tea, Asian spices, cigar box and suggestions of Mandarin orange rind complete this wine that shows some serious range. The tension and structure here is outstanding. Drink 2017-2027- 93

2014 Kevin White ‘DuBrul Vineyard Heritage’ Red Wine- This wine is a blend of 53% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine was aged in 40% new French oak for 22 months prior to bottling. The wine begins with aromatics reminiscent of red bell pepper, red cherry, black tea and tar. The mouthfeel is plush and beautiful. Red cherry, milk chocolate, cloves and a slight salinity mark this outstanding wine. This elegant wine will be a long-ager. Drink 2017-2030- 93

SIXTO

October 2, 2017

Washington is not exactly known for Chardonnay. I think most wine critics would argue that Chardonnay is not what Washington does best. SIXTO has challenged this contention. For the past few years, SIXTO under the guidance of mogul Charles Smith, has crafted some of the most compelling Chardonnay wines in Washington. The wines are rich, layered and downright delicious. Brennan Leighton is the superstar winemaker behind these wines. The new wines from the exceedingly warm 2014 vintage were downright awesome, none more so than the 2014 SIXTO ‘Frenchman Hills’ Chardonnay (WWB, 93) which is an intense new Chardonnay bottling that rivals the best in the state. Head winemaker Cameron Kontos makes some outstanding Walla Walla Valley red and white wines.

Interview with Cameron Kontos, Winemaker of Kontos Cellars

September 27, 2017

Today we introduce a great Walla Walla winemaker that has a longstanding history in the Washington wine industry. Cameron Kontos has been crafting great wines at Kontos Cellars for many years. A second generation winemaker, I have been impressed with Cameron's outstanding releases in the past two years. These wines show a marvelous tension and balance, considering the heat of the vintages. I recently had the chance to sit down with Cameron and talk wine. He talked about the last vintage as well as his background in wine. I think you will really enjoy hearing his story. Here is my interview with Cameron Kontos of Kontos Cellars

WWB: What was it like having a winemaker as a dad (his father Cliff was winemaker for Fort Walla Walla Cellars)? Do you feel that gives you an edge in terms of both winemaking and understanding Walla Walla fruit?

CK: Having my dad as a winemaker helped in many ways. 1. I was 18 trying to find a passion, and knew I didn't want to be a wheat farmer (he and my oldest brother farm about 10,000 acres of wheat). Spending time with him learning how to make wine and build my palette, helped me find it.  2. He tought me the art after barrel blending and the characters of Walla Walla fruit. 3. I would go with my dad to the wine alliance meetings, which thought me the networking side. I was able to create relationships with growers and other winemakers.

WWB: What are some of the most important things you learned in your eight years at Forgeron Cellars? How is your style of winemaking different or similar to that of Forgeron?

CK: Marie Eve at Forgeron thought me several things. 1. I learned the French style of winemaking. 2. Different types of winemaking. Not everything is done the same. 3.  How to manage employees.  4. The chemistry side of things, and how to rely on my palette with the numbers to verify.  5. Introduced old world wines to me, which helped expand my education.

WWB: Your 2012 wines were really great. What did you like about that vintage? Are you excited about your 2013 and 2014 wines?

CK: The 2012 vintage was very similar to 2007. The quality and numbers that came out of the grapes that year were ideal for pretty much everything.  I always say that the 07 and 12 years almost anyone could make a decent product, but the years between were where the winemakers really showed what they could do. Those years were rough conditions, the growers did what they could do to get them ripe with flavors still there, I happen to enjoy the challenges on the tough years. I give the growers so much credit on all the wines every year, without good grapes I couldn't make good wine. I am really excited about the 2013 wines. They have a lot of similarities to the 2012 in my opinion. The 2014 wines that are the current release, they are right there par with a long stretch of ideal conditions. The 2012 through the 2016 wines are all shaping up very nicely, I just do what I can to not mess them up. So far the 2017 wines have had some challenges but are coming together beautiful. My favorite years are the years that have the biggest challenges.

WWB: What kind of wines of the world do you enjoy and what kind of wines are typically in your cellar?

CK: There are many great wines out there. I like to always try what the other winemakers in the area are doing. I also like to see what other wine regions are doing. We trade wine all the time and sit down and enjoy them.

One of the great winemakers in Chile, Aurelio Montes of Montes.

One of the great winemakers in Chile, Aurelio Montes of Montes.

Montes

September 26, 2017

A brief jaunt down to the Southern Hemisphere today, as we bring you one of the stars of Chile. Founded by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, in 1988, they joined up with the other two founders, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, to found Montes under the name Discover Wine. Montes wines essentially went from nowhere to selling their wines in more than 100 countries worldwide. They have been a huge export hit in North America, with Costco being one of the largest sellers of Montes wines. I’ve had bottlings of their ‘Alpha’ series back roughly 15 years and have been consistently impressed with their quality to price ratio. Some of these Montes Alpha bottlings are in the $15.00 range and tend to exceed the quality of most wines in that price point.

Look no further than their outstanding new Carmenere release, the 2015 Montes ‘Alpha’ Carmenere (WWB, 92) which shows wonderful weight and tension as well as herbal quality that you want in great Carmenere. One of the great wines of Chile is the 2012 Montes ‘M’ Red Wine (WWB, 94) which shows wonderful terroir, richness and Bordelaise acidity. This gorgeous wine is one for the cellar. Learn more about this storied winery at http://www.monteswines.com Here are the great new release wines by Montes.

2014 Montes ‘The Twins’ Red Wine- This is a compelling blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carmenre by Montes. Spicebox, red cherry, dill and cedar aromatics with smoke coat the glass. The herbaceousness is really nice here. Dill, green bell peppper, black cherry and mocha flavors impress. This has pretty serious range and texture considering the price point as this is an outstanding value by Montes. Drink 2017-2022- 89

2014 Montes ‘Alpha’ Carmenere- This deep hued wine begins with aromatics of creme de cassis, mocha, mint and green belll pepper. The herbaceousness is really lovely here. Drink 2017-2024- 92

2015 Montes ‘Alpha’ Carmenere- Showing an extremely deep core, this wine begins with intense aromas of red bell pepper, exotic spices, red cherry preserves and suggestions of milk chocolate. The weight and mouthfeel here is really gorgeous. Plush black cherry, red currant, milk chocolate, green bell pepper and baking spice flavors coat the mid-palate. This finishes long. This is an outstanding effort by Montes. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2012 Montes ‘Folly’ Syrah- Sourced from the Colcachgua Valley and the Raphel Valley, the wine was aged foe 18 months in new French oak prior to bottling. This has a brooding, dark color and needs more than an hour in the decanter to settle. Slowly unwinding, the wine begins to develop intense aromatics of Chinese black tea, red bell pepper, sweet pipe tobacco and red cherry cough syrup. The generous mouthfeel impresses. Black olive, milk chocolate, black cherry preserves and boysenberry cordial flavors show excellent range. The weight is intense but the wine maintains a strong minerality. As the wine continues to develop in the decanter it becomes increasing difficult to put down. Seductive and deep, this layered beauty will cellar well for a decade or more. Drink 2017-2027- 94

Montes M Wine.jpg

2012 Montes ‘M’ Red Wine- The 2012 ‘M’ by Montes was aged for 18 months in new French oak prior to bottling. The wine needs more than an hour decant to show its stuff. An outstanding blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine begins with aromatics reminiscent of green bell pepper, sagebrush, Catalan green olive and suggestions of baking spices with wild blackberry. The herbal quality on the nose is hugely prominent and gives you a wonderful sense of place. Silky smooth on the mid-palate, the wine begins with yield dark fruit flavors that connect with roasted figs and milk chocolate shavings. Plush and downright delicious, enjoy this wine over the next 15-20 years. Drink 2017-2030- 94

One of the great wines of Rioja, the Bodega Contador 'La Cueva del Contador' impresses even in the most challenging of vintages.

Bodega Contador

September 22, 2017

One of the epic stars of Rioja, Benjamin Romeo worked as winemaker at Artadi between 1985 and 2000, before starting his Contador project. Situated in and around San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Benjamin has 7 hectares, half devoted to La Vina de Andres, and the other half divided between 20 plots averaging 130 square feet with vines up to 100 years old.

His wines have gained international acclaim. I would describe his winemaking style as modern, with old world elegance — almost like Opus One which is obviously a new world wine shows refinement and elegance.

Across the board, Romeo hits a home run with his new release wines. A tremendous value Rioja Blanco, the 2015 Bodega Contador ‘Predicator’ Rioja Blanco (WWB, 92) has tremendous poise and texture. This wine is sure to give drinking pleasure for a decade or possibly more. Do not miss the insanely good 2010 Bodega Contador ‘Carmen’ Gran Reserva Rioja (WWB, 94) which is a silky and dense effort that will cellar marvelously for a decade or more. Learn more about these very special wines at http://bodegacontador.com Here are the fantastic new wines by Bodega Contador.

The mid-palate weight is excellent. Pipe tobacco, black olive, brandied cherry and Asian spice flavors impress, leading to the long, mineral driven finish. Drink 2017-2026-91

2015 Bodega Contador ‘Predicator’ Rioja Blanco- This outstanding bottling is a blend of Viura, Garnacha and Malvasia which was aged in 30% new French oak for 8 months prior to bottling. This Rioja Blanco begins with aromatics of butter, macadamia nut and green papaya. Bright, dense and downright delicious, this delivers a wonderful viscosity and texture. Cantaloupe, beeswax, butter and brioche flavors entice. The richness makes this particularly hard to resist. Drink 2017-2026- 92

Del Dotto

September 20, 2017

One of the famed Napa wineries, Del Dotto Vineyards is a family-owned winery which focuses on small production, premium wines. Owner Dave Del Dotto has spent the last 20 years acquiring vineyards in some of the top American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) including Rutherford, Oakville, St. Helena, Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Sonoma Coast. Del Dotto makes an incredible range of wines — everything from a port style wine to bubbles. I think that their overall lineup rivals the best in California. The new release wines were stunning. A few weeks back I was able to visit their stunning chateau in Oakville. A palatial setting, this place is just an incredible spot to taste wine. In their cave tasting you go down their long row of barrels, tasting their new release Cabernet wines.

For those who love the deep, extracted style of Cabernet, this is a must visit. While their 2015 Cabernet releases from the barrel were hugely impressive, I was struck by the quality of their overall lineup. One of the best Sparkling Wines out of California that I have had in the past year, their 2012 Del Dotto ‘Bubbles’ Sparkling Wine (WWB, 94) carries a heavy price point but shows an incredible range of aromatics and flavors. This is just a stunning sparkler. Their 2015 Del Dotto ‘Family Reserve’ Chardonnay (WWB, 93) was nearly as good, showing a gorgeous texture and mouthfeel. The best wines I tried were their limited release Cabernet wines. The 2015 Villa Del Lago Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 98) is one of Del Dotto’s signature releases. This wine is near perfection, showing gobs of dark fruits, as well as a silky texture and downright unctuous mouthfeel. Just was good was their new wine, the 2015 Del Dotto ‘The Beast’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 98), a scintillating and brooding wine that shows serious intensity, fruit weight and massive dark fruits. These stunning wines are among the best in Napa. Learn more about this famed winery at http://www.deldottovineyards.com Here are the gorgeous new wines by Del Dotto.

Didier Dageuneau

September 19, 2017

We bring to you one of the most esteemed wineries in the Loire Valley. Didier Dageuneau is a pioneer in the Pouilly Fume region of the Loire who has received a cult following for his exquisite Sauvignon Blanc wines. Didier tragically died in September 2008, in a plane crash in the Cognac region of France. His son subsequently took over the 30 acre vineyard as well as the winery. Dageauneau has a variety of different cuveés, including Buisson-Renard, Pur Sang (French for "pureblood"), Asteroïde, and Silex ‘Flint’. An ex-motorcycle racer with no formal enological training Dagueneau clashed with other winegrowers about typicality of the varietal. His vineyard practices were a combination of the exacting very low yields with using as using horses to plow the soil between vines.

The most recent release that I sampled was the highly compelling 2014 Didier Dageuneau ‘Silex’ Pouilly Fume (WWB, 95). This wine shows insane terroir, tension and minerality. The weight and texture of this wine is remarkable. If I were to blind this magical wine I would struggle with the combination of mid-palate weight and terror. There is nothing like the ‘Silex.’ Here is the scintillating new release by Didier Dageuneau.

2014 Didier Dageuneau 'Silex' Pouilly Fume- From an enclave just outside the cuverie in Saint Andelain, the Dagueneau Blanc Fume de Pouilly Silex is produced by Didier Dagueneau’s son Louis-Benjamin (whose name now appears on the label). Benjamin Dagueneau oversees the estate’s 11 hectares (27 acre) vineyard. The smoky accents aromatically are immediately expressive. Ash, Serrano pepper, Bosc pear and cantaloupe aromatics impress. The palate shows incredible weight and plush texture. Smoke, white peach, Gravenstein apple, and gooseberry character complete this astringent and mineral driven wine. You have to admire the stony comportment here.  The downright oily texture beautifully coats the mid palate. This has the tension to cellar well past the next decade. Drink 2017-2028 95

Darioush

September 18, 2017

Northern Iran is one of the birthplaces of wine, as records from 5,000 B.C. indicate a nomad culture living there and celebrating wine. Darioush Khaledi was instilled at an early age with the winemaking craft of his father and began collecting fine wine at a young age. He migrated from Iran to the United States and owned what was once the largest family-owned grocery store business in California. His passion for wine met its apex in 1997 when he formed Darioush winery.

I recently had the chance to visit the gorgeous property in Napa. Darioush is truly one of the most beautiful wineries in North America. Darioush is one of the few wineries where the quality of wine equals or surpasses the splendor of their property. Their current lineup was just as good as any in Napa. Look for their 2016 Darioush Viognier (WWB, 93) which rivals the best in North America. Even better was the 2014 Darioush Cabernet Franc (WWB, 96) which showed an incredible mouthfeel and silky texture and is up there with the best Cabernet Franc that I have sampled in the past year. Learn more about this famed winery at darioush.com. Here are the great new wines by Darioush.

Caliza

September 16, 2017

One of the outstanding relatively new Paso Robles projects, Caliza is Spanish for "limestone", which is connects the name to the 20-acre Caliza vineyard. The vineyard is predominantly comprised of hillsides with south-facing slopes which leads to maximum sun exposure.. Set at 900-1200 feet above sea level in Templeton Gap area, the vineyard faces strong diurnal shifts which creates some nice tension in the wines.

Caliza is spearheaded by Carl and Pam Bowker, who planted near L’Aventure and Booker. This was clearly a smart investment. Carl Bowker graduated from Napa Valley College’s Viticulture and Enology associate program in 2004. One year later he purchased this exciting site. His wines were excellent across the board. One of the best Rose wines out of Paso, the 2016 Caliza ‘Pink Wine’ Rose (WWB, 91) has marvelous tension and purity of fruit. This is the perfect wine for the last few warm days. I was very impressed with the 2014 Caliza Syrah (WWB, 93) which has marvelous weight but also wonderful tension. This great wine will cellar marvelously for a decade or more. Learn more about this great Paso Robles winery at https://www.calizawinery.com Here are the great new wines by Caliza.

Drink 2017-2022- 91

2014 Caliza Syrah- Sourced from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles this inky colored Syrah impresses from another drought vintage. Head winemaker Carl Bowker has crafted a highly perfumed Syrah with aromatics of creme de cassis, rose petals, red bell pepper and tobacco leaf with red cherry compote. Tapiz

September 13, 2017

Located in the Uco Valley in Argentina, Tapiz is best known for their Malbecs which are on restaurant lists across the US. Tapiz winemaker Fabian Valenzuela was joined by Jean Claude Berrouet in 2012. Fabian is the son and grandson of vignerons and has more than 30 years of winemaking experience. Jean Claude is the recently-retired winemaker of Petrus, having presided over 44 vintages at this famed Bordeaux winery. Jean Claude was the first permanent winemaker at Petrus which was a pretty serious honor. These wines are sourced from San Pablo which has some of the highest altitude vineyards in Mendoza (4,600 feet above sea level). The high elevation here, with huge diurnal shifts, helps impart the natural acidity to the Malbecs.

The new release Malbecs by Tapiz were fantastic. One of the best Malbecs that I have reviewed in the past year, the 2012 Tapiz ‘Black Tears’ Malbec (WWB, 93) is massive, layered and downright delicious. This great wine will cellar marvelously for a decade or more. Learn more about this great winery at

Bodega Colome

September 11, 2017

Friends, we journey south to Argentina today, focusing on one of the great estates in the Southern Hemisphere. Bodega Colome is located in the Calchaqui Valley, 2300 meters (7500 feet) above sea level, in the northwest region of Argentina. Founded in 1831, it is one of the oldest existing wineries in Argentina. In 2001, it was acquired by the Hess Family Estates. The wines are grown in the highest vineyards in the world (7218-10,207 feet above sea level). The high elevation contributes to the tension in the wines.

One of the best Torrontes wines out there, the 2016 Bodega Colome Torrontes (WWB, 93) has wonderful poise and salinity. This is a stunning value by Colome. Argyle

September 8, 2017

One of the premier producers of Sparkling Wine in North America, the recent wines from Argyle have shown why they carry such an impressive reputation. This year Argyle celebrated their 30th year in the wine industry.  I have been tasting at Argyle for 15 years. For years I admired the wines of former winemaker, Rollin Soles. The new releases are spearheaded by superstar winemaker Nate Klostermann, who crafts a wide range of outstanding wines. Nate was oringally a harvest intern at Argyle in 2005 and has served as winemaker since 2013. He utilizes fruit from some great Oregon vineyards including the Spirit Hill Vineyard and the Knudsen Vineyard. The new release wines have been taken from some great vintages, 2014 and 2015. Both vintages were very warm in Oregon and have let to wonderful, fruit driven wines.

Check out one of the great values in Sparkling Wine, the 2014 Argyle Brut Sparkling Wine (WWB, 90) which shows wonderful poise and ripe fruit flavors. Even better is the 2013 Argyle Brut Rose Sparkling Wine (WWB, 93) which has a wonderful refreshing side alongside light red fruit flavors. Learn more about these outstanding wines at http://www.argylewinery.com Here are the outstanding new wines by Argyle.

2014 Argyle Brut Sparkling Wine- This wine shows lovely effervescence. Brioche, Meyer lemon zest and kumquat aromatics give way to Granny Smith apple, orange rind and wet stone flavors that sit alongside some nice minerality. Drink 2017-2024- 90

Bright, showing strong citrus on the mid-palate, this wine is lined by Meyer lemon oil, unripe papaya, Gravenstein apple and challah bread flavors. The intensity is there. Drink 2017-2027- 92

2013 Argyle Brut Rose- Sourced from a host of vineyards in the Willamette Valley, this excellent Rose wine has a rather intoxicating bouquet of rose petals, candied red cherry, orange blossom and suggestions of baking spices. This wine was largely sourced from the Knudsen (35%), Spirit Hill, (40%) and Lone Star (25%) vineyards. Red fruits dominate the aromatics with Earl Grey tea and spicebox elements present. The mid-palate mouthfeel is downright silky, showcasing cherry pie, blood orange, pomegranate seed and hints of forest floor. This is just stunning wine from this storied Oregon estate and superstar winemaker Nate Klostermann. Drink 2017-2027- 93

You have to love the weight and texture here that make this one of the most impressive wines that I have sampled from this AVA. The new lineup of Beringer wines was absolutely stunning.

The new lineup of Beringer wines was absolutely stunning.

Beringer Vineyards

September 6, 2017

One of the historic Napa properties, Beringer dates back to the 1860s. I’m pretty sure the wine quality wasn’t anything near their current release ‘Private Reserve’ Chardonnay and Cabernet bottlings. I’ve tasted at Beringer for more than a decade and it is always an awesome experience to come back to this historic winery. Absolutely epic ‘Private Reserve’ Chardonnay wines from 2004 and 2007 vintages clog my memory bank. Beringer may have invented the White Zin but they also have crafted some incredibly age worthy Chardonnay and Cabernet wines.

While their new release is the 2015, their 2014 ‘Private Reserve’ Chardonnay (WWB, 94) is a showstopper, currently displaying an unctuous texture and serious tension. This is a wine to buy by the case, if still available. Always impressive, particularly in good vintages, the 2014 Beringer ‘Private Reserve’ Cabernet (WWB, 95) is a stunning wine that was made by former winemaker Laurie Hooke. This is obviously ripe but has gobs of layers, showing true Napa character. It is a stunning achievement, considering more than 7k cases were made. Hats off to the Beringer winemaking team on their achievements. Learn more about these awesome wines at beringer.com Here are the awesome new premium wines by Beringer Vineyards.

Hors Catégorie

August 31, 2017

As we set sail to what has been a marvelous Washington Wine Month we bring to you one of the exclusive new wineries by superstar vigneron Christophe Baron. Literally translated to ‘in a class of its own’ Hors Catégorie is a magnificent expression of terroir in a bottle. Sourced from a mere 2 acre vineyard hidden in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, the Hors Catégorie Vineyard is a sight to be seen. Having visited the steep slopes with vigneron, Christophe Baron, I was amazed at this old world style of vineyard. The grade was so steep that you could barely climb to the top. At the halfway point, Christophe suggested that we both run the rest of the way to the top which was actually a great suggestion. As I wiped the beads of sweat off my forehead I gazed out at the incredible views from the top of the vineyard as Christophe talked about the huge undertaking of crafting this incredible vineyard. Creating this two acre vineyard was a remarkable achievement.

True to any project by Christophe, spacing at the vineyard is extremely tight. The terroir was largely stony with thick broken basalt sprinkled everywhere. You can almost feel the tension in the wines from the struggle of each individual vine. Back at the tasting studio I had a chance to finally review the 2014 Hors Catégorie Syrah. This wine was downright intoxicating. The terroir in Hors Catégorie is completely different than the stony character of his Milton-Freewater Vineyards. It is hard to describe this incredible tasting experience. Once in the mouth, layer upon layer descends on you, ranging from red fruit to dark fruit to Umami. This wine is truly a delight to savor, as it is a near perfect masterpiece -- it is simply brilliant stuff by Christophe Baron. Learn more about this exciting project at https://horscategorievineyards.com/horscategorievineyards/ Here is the new review for the 2014 Hors Catégorie Syrah.

2014 Hors Catégorie Syrah- This utterly compelling Syrah is sourced from the Hors Catégorie Vineyard outside of Walla Walla. This steeply sloped two-acre vineyard is planted on stakes beneath ragged cliffs and surrounded by rocky outcroppings with vines digging through the fractured basalt. One of the most fascinating wines I have tasted from the region, this deeply colored Syrah begins with vivid aromatics of red cherries and blood orange coming together with umami and barn floor. The aromas are absolutely seductive, constantly bringing you back to the glass for more. The balance and purity of fruit is outstanding, as this wine showcases a variety of complex flavors including red and dark fruits which sit alongside green peppercorn, umami, smoked bacon, Earl Grey tea and coffee. The mouthfeel and textural presence of this wine is mind-numbing. Overall, this is a absolutely majestic wine from Christophe Baron which will cellar beautifully for a decade or more.  Drink 2017-2030- 99

I had an amazing visit to Leonetti and Figgins Estate a few months back, checking out their new release wines, including the stunning 2014 Figgins Estate Red Wine.

Figgins Estate

August 30, 2017

As we near the closing of another epic Washington Wine Month, we bring to you a great Washington winery that needs little introduction. Figgins Estate is devoted to one vineyard which was largely planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Spearheaded by eminent Washington vintner, Chris Figgins, Figgins Estate makes only two wines each year, a Riesling and a Red Blend. The vineyard is set against the Blue Mountains and is set in the far east corner of the Walla Walla Valley at 1750 feet. It is not surprising that this vineyard receives massive diurnal shifts. Starting with the inaugural 2008 vintage, the quality of the wines has seemingly improved with each vintage.

Last year’s epic 2013 Figgins Estate Red Wine landed itself on our 2016 Washington Wine Blog Top 100. This new release, the 2014 Figgins Family Estate Red Wine (WWB, 95, slated for Fall 2017) is a massive wine that needs a few more years in the bottle to settle. For me it took more than three hours in the decanter to fully dance. This dazzling effort shows impressive minerality alongside dense dark fruits. This wine is quite simply unlike anything I have tried this year from Walla Walla. Learn more about this outstanding winery at http://www.figginswine.com Here are the outstanding new wines to be released Fall 2017 by Figgins Estate.

2016 Figgins Estate Riesling- Weighing in at 12.1% residual sugar, this excellent Riesling begins with aromatics of white peach, beeswax, pink grapefruit and honey. This leads to bright flavors of Gravenstein apple, pink grapefruit, lemon oil, white flowers and unripe pear. This has lovely acidity and weight. Drink 2017-2026- 93

Figgins 2014 Red Wine.JPG

2014 Figgins Estate Red Wine- The Figgins Estate Vineyard is located on a south slope where Mill Creek enters the Walla Walla Valley. Known for major diurnal shifts, the Figgins Estate Vineyard is set with the Blue Mountains in the background. The 2014 Figgins ‘Red Wine’ is a blockbuster wine that needs a ton of time in the decanter to settle. This great red wine was aged for 22 months in French oak (61% new) prior to bottling. Following a more than three hour decant the wine slowly unveils black olive tapenade, smoke, cigar box and creme de cassis aromatics. The mouthfeel is ripe, showing intense black cherry cough syrup, boysenberry pie, mocha, graphite and creme de cassis flavors. Not for the weary, the extremely long and memorable finish accentuates this heavyhitter of a wine. Try to avoid this decadent bottling for at least two years. This is just a stunning effort by superstar winemaker Chris Figgins. Drink 2019-2035- 95

I had a remarkable tasting at HALL, sampling their world-class Cabernet and Pinot Noir

HALL Wines

August 29, 2017

When you visit Napa Valley, a stop at HALL is a must. I have been visiting HALL for more than a decade it has become one of the go-to stops in Napa, as their Cabernet lineup rivals the world’s best. Kathryn and Craig Hall acquired the historic St. Helena Bergfeld Winery in 2003 and re-opened as HALL St. Helena in July of that year. This winery’s location was previously home of the Napa Valley Co-Op, producing 40% of Napa Valley’s wines. In 2013, The Hall family completed the restoration of the 1885 Bergfeld Winery and merged history and innovation with the completion of California’s first LEED® Gold Certified winery and a really cool gravity flow winemaking facility. HALL has more than 500 acres of estate vineyards, primarily growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

HALL Winemaker Steve Leveque has a serious pedigree, spending more than 16 years of winemaking expertise started at Robert Mondavi Winery as well as serving as winemaker atChalk Hill Estate Winery in Sonoma. The new releases by Steve and his winemaking team were absolutely scintillating. The 2014 HALL ‘Kathryn Hall’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 98) is an absolute stunner, showing incredible purity of fruit, a borderline ethereal texture and gobs of dark fruits. The wine is a remarkable achievement by HALL. Even better was the 2014 HALL ‘Rainin’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 99) which follows up our Washington Wine Blog #7 wine of 2016, the 2013 ‘Rainin’ Cabernet. This wine along with their other ‘Platinum Collection’ wines were remarkable achievements. Deep and penetrating flavors of sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, creme de cassis, allspice and espresso delight the sesnses. Like the ‘Rainin’ bottling this wine has a seamless quality alongside the obvious viscosity here. This is another stunner by HALL that can age for decades. Drink 2017-2044- 98

2014 HALL ‘Sacrashe’ Cabernet Sauvignon- HALL bought this vineyard in 1995. This year's ‘Sacrashe’ is even more impressive than the gorgeous 2013 bottling. The aromatics delight showing off Turkish coffee, cigar box, anise and creme de cassis on the nose. Mocha, anise, creme de cassis, and sweet pipe tobacco flavors impress. This has moderate tannins at this juncture so if enjoying young be sure to give this at least a two hour decant. The seamless quality to this wine is apparent, as is the fruit weight and intensity. Decadent, masculine and rich, this is a stunning heavyhitter by superstar winemaker Steve Leveque. Drink 2017-2044- 99
