Here we have two of the gorgeous spring 2020 releases by Toil Oregon and superstar winemaker Chris Figgins.

Toil Oregon

April 22, 2020

One of the outstanding producers of Oregon Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Toil Oregon is an exciting winery project by superstar winemaker Chris Figgins of Leonetti Cellar fame. Originally launched in 2012, Toil Oregon started with a production of 200 cases and it has grown considerably since then. The wines are sourced from a host of vineyards in the Willamette Valley and in 2016 Chris planted his estate vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Chris is finally producing wines from his estate vineyard which has to be really thrilling for him. His first wine from the vineyard is his 2019 Rose, which is a total stunner.

It was several years back that I noticed an increase in overall quality of the wines. My guess is that Chris is coming more and more familiar with making wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are some of the most challenging grapes to mold. Chris has been making some of the best Rose wine in the Pacific Northwest over the past three years. It is no surprise that his 2019 Toil Oregon Rose (WWB, 93) deserves a place at the high table in top North American Rose. This wine is subtle and has a silky texture and wonderful range. The new release 2018 Toil Oregon Pinot Noir (WWB, 94) is nothing short of a stunning wine that has a gorgeous combination of ripe red fruits with damp earth tones and wonderful brightness from this warm vintage that saw seriously high summer temperatures and a cooler fall.  I can imagine that these wines will continue to improve even more so with the development of Chris’s vineyard in Oregon as those vines age. Learn more about this great winery at toiloregon.com Here are the brilliant new wines by Toil Oregon.

2019 Toil Oregon Rose- Sourced from Pinot Noir grapes and showing off its vibrant hue once in the glass, the 2019 Toil Rose opens with lovely wild mushroom and damp earth tones that are woven together with shades of nutmeg, cran-cherry and teaberry that all take shape in the glass. Once on the attack the wine takes on a silky mouthfeel producing a seamless effect mid-palate. The generous length really entices, as this slowly unveils pretty red fruits that dance with rose water and shades of peat moss flavors. Subtle, elegant and truly outstanding, showing good texture and brightness, the 2019 Toil Rose will only get better with time, becoming even more round and picking up earthy tones as it ages. Drink 2020-2027- 93

2018 Toil Oregon Chardonnay- The 2018 Toil Oregon Chardonnay is another impressive wine that will have a long life ahead of it. Aged in largely neutral oak (27% new) for eleven months before bottling, the Chardonnay opens with sourdough bread and bright pear and starfruit tones that all mingle together in the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced and shows a great viscosity that makes this seamlessly glide once on the attack. The exceedingly long finish accentuates this great new wine. Drinking marvelously now, the 2018 Toil Chardonnay will age gracefully for at least another decade, picking up nutty and earthy tertiary tones as it ages. Drink 2020-2030- 93

2018 Toil Oregon Pinot Noir- The 2018 Toil Oregon Pinot Noir is a gorgeous effort by superstar winemaker Chris Figgins. Aged for eleven months in 32% new French oak, the Pinot Noir opens with layers of pretty red fruits that are woven together with peat moss, forest floor and citrus rind accents that all meld in the glass. The texture of the wine is downright awesome as rich cran-pomegranate and red cherry liquor flavors combine with the marvelous damp earth tones on the palate. The length of the wine is outstanding, finishing strong with red fruits and minerals. Great to enjoy in its youth, the rich, yet elegant 2018 Toil Oregon Pinot Noir will have another decade or two of life ahead of it. Drink 2020-2035- 94

Woodward Canyon

April 21, 2020

One of the storied Walla Walla wineries, as part of Walla Walla Wine Month we bring you a historic Washington mainstay, founded in 1981. I have long admired these beautiful, full-bodied wines. Back in 2002, I was one of the few Whitman College students going to tasting rooms and thinking about aromas and flavors of wine, but I am very glad that I did. Woodward Canyon was one of the first tasting rooms that I ever set foot in, but I can remember being impressed with the wines since my first visit. Woodward Canyon crafts some of most consistently good Cabernets and Chardonnays in Washington.

Their ‘Artist Series’ Cabernet Sauvignon has been truly one of the most consistent red wines made in Washington since their first vintage in 1993. This a wine that ages gracefully for decades. I have had several vintages of this wine in the past year, including a stellar Vertical Tasting that I did with Rick and Darcy Small that included every vintage of the wine (minus one). These wines had some amazing aging potential and even the oldest vintages of the wine were showing well. Their new edition the 2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Artist Series’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 93) is dense, layered and beautifully textured with layers of toasty oak that surround a deep core of dark fruits. This is one for the cellar. I was totally blown away by their 2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Estate Reserve’ Red Wine (WWB, 94) which is a blend that always changes but this year it relies on Cabernet Franc. This is a massive, chewy wine that has a long life to live. Learn more about this historic Washington winery at https://www.woodwardcanyon.com/ Here are the gorgeous new release wines by Woodward Canyon.

2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Artist Series’ Cabernet Sauvignon-One of the iconic Cabernet wines made in Washington state, it was an incredible experience last summer to taste through all of the vintages (minus one) of this glorious wine. The new, 2017 edition is a gorgeous new wine that has a long life ahead of it. Layers of toasty oak mingle with Black Forest Cake, black tea and exotic spices on this expressive nose. The palate is full-bodied and wonderfully textured. Creme de cassis, anise, wild blackberry cobbler and shades of milk chocolate all come together on the palate. With great length and weight, the 2017 ‘Artist Series’ Cabernet Sauvignon will cellar well for decades to come. Drink 2020-2035- 93

2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Estate’ Cabernet Franc- the 2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Estate’ Cabernet Franc is a beautiful new wine that has a long way int he cellar to go. The herbal undertones of the nose, alongside the core of black fruits and toasty oak sing in unison aromatically. Once on the palate you feel that silky texture as layers of toasty oak wrap their way around ripe blackberries, black currants and black tea flavors, with tobacco and baking spices that all meld together. Fresh and gratifying to enjoy right now, the 2017 ‘Estate’ Cabernet Franc will enjoy a long life ahead of it. Drink 2020-2032- 93

2017 Woodward Canyon ‘Estate Reserve’ Red Wine- A blend which changes each year, the 2017 edition highlights Cabernet Franc (59%) with smaller portions Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The herbal and red bell pepper tones entice as baking spices, cocoa powder and ripe boysenberry aromatics build in the glass. The palate is dense and intense, showing a seamless texture. Layers of toasty oak wrap around the ripe dark fruits with chocolate, creosote and mineral accents on the palate. Gorgeous in its youth, this massive and chewy ‘Estate Reserve; will cellar well for decades to come. If enjoying in its youth, be sure to give this a two hour decant. Drink 2020-2038- 94

Superstar winemaker and sommelier extraordinaire, Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen has crafted another thrilling new lineup for his W.T. Vintners.

W.T. Vintners

April 20, 2020

One of the truly unique wineries in Woodinville, W.T. Vintners utilizes the talents of Advanced Sommelier, Jeff Lindsay-Thorsen, who crafts a dazzling array of wines, from crisp Gruner Veltliner to stony Syrah. The latest set of releases are really special as this is the first time that Jeff has crafted a Chardonnay which is something he admittedly thought he would never do. Jeff has given us some very special details about this brand new wine.

“My deep love for wine is rooted in the wines of Burgundy, from both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. My first harvest was in the Willamette Valley in 2005. I then had the opportunity to work the harvest in Burgundy in 2008 for a small domaine and followed it up in 2009 in Martinborough, New Zealand. Each time it was a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir 14-16 hour a day intensive. These experiences shaped my philosophy and winemaking techniques that I apply to all of our wines. In Eastern Washington, we believe Syrah and Rhône varieties transmit that certain "je ne sais quoi" that makes each vineyard we work with special. However, in the heat and intense sun of Eastern Washington, I don't feel the style of Chardonnay or Pinot Noir I sought to make was possible. For our Pinot Noir, we sought out some of the best fruit we could find in the Pacific Northwest, landing in the exquisite Seven Springs vineyard in the Willamette Valley. When we turned our attention to Chardonnay, we found a young vineyard in the cool-climate Columbia Gorge, called Rainmaker, in the hills above White Salmon. Upon our first visit, this vineyard commanded our attention and inspired our sense of adventure to see what could be. We are under no illusions that we have created the next Montrachet or Grand Cru Chablis, but with patience and a gentle hand in the cellar, we believe we have made a Washington Chardonnay true to the grape and the place. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and spontaneously fermented in 4-year-old 225L François Frères barrels. The goal was a kiss of oak and mouthfeel, not a slathering of new wood. Fermentation was brutally slow, it took 11 months for the wines to finish. The wine saw no SO2 until then. After 14 months we racked the wine to marry the barrels and bottled with a small SO2 bump at bottling after 16 months. Making this wine was an exercise in patience and having faith in the process. In the end, I think it's pretty damn delicious and will bring people a lot of joy.”

One of the best Rose wines I have sampled for my upcoming 2020 Rose Report, Jeff also crafts his Rose from the ‘Rainmaker Vineyard’ and has a great style which has plenty of richness but is very restrained in style. He described this beautiful wine “We started making Rosé in 2013 and have bounced around from the Walla Walla "Rocks" to the Willamette Valley searching for the right vineyard. I am looking for tension, texture, and acidity in our rosé, not a chilled hyper-pale flabby red wine or a mouth puckering wine devoid of the varietal character. I love the Pinot Noir rosés of Marsannay in Burgundy and Sancerre rosé, from the Loire. I especially love Domaine Vacheron. Pinot rosé at its best has energy, a sense of place and brisk freshness. They are supremely drinkable and versatile wines with food, from sushi to tacos.”

Jeff continued “In 2014 and 2015 we got to work with the old block of Celilo Vineyard Pinot for our rosé, we loved the resulting wine. When the vineyard sold we lost our access and bounced around for a bit looking for a new home. The moment we set foot on Rainmaker vineyard it was clear this was the place. Rainmaker vineyard is a breathtakingly beautiful south-southwest amphitheater with volcanic clay soils at an elevation of about 1200 feet. The potential is so exciting. We have partnered with the owner's Larry and Patti Singer, along with James Mantone of Syncline and are developing what will become one of Washington's foremost cool-climate vineyards.”

Jeff described his winemaking process, adding “We slowly whole-cluster pressed the pinot to extract color, flavor, and a touch of tannin. The fruit had over 7 grams of mouth ripping acidity so we neutral barrel fermented about 10% of the wine to add back to the stainless-steel fermented wine softening out the edges without undermining the character of the vintage. The remaining juice was spontaneously fermented at a cool 58 degrees in stainless steel to slow things down keep the lees in suspension as long as possible. This helped build texture and mouthfeel as a counterpoint to the high acidity in the wine.”

The wines are stellar across the board and his 2019 W.T. Vintners ‘Rainmaker’ Rose (WWB, 92) has marvelous texture and tension with bright red fruits. I love the elegance in this wine. Even better is that thrilling new 2018 W.T. Vintners ‘Rainmaker’ Chardonnay (WWB, 93) which is fresh, vibrant and remarkably soft, showing great range and minerality. A family run winery, Suzanne Groth leads the business side of Groth, one of Napa’s outstanding wineries.

Groth

April 17, 2020

One of the great family owned wineries in Napa, Groth Vineyards was founded in 1982. Founders Judy and Dennis Groth found financial success while working for Ernst and Young in the South Bay. Dennis became chief financial officer at Atari and in 1981 they both purchased a large 121 acre parcel of land in Oakville back in 1982. What a buy that was!. These vineyards are on the floor of Napa, right in the prime area for growing beautiful Chardonnay, and Bordeaux varietals. Today, second-generation family member Suzanne Groth leads the business. Winemaker Cameron Parry took over as head winemaker in 2014, after previously serving as winemaker at Chateau Montelena for 10 years.

I was blown away with the new wines, which show excellent quality and value. A downright awesome value is the 2018 Groth Sauvignon Blanc (WWB, 92)  which has tremendous freshness and verve but also downright awesome texture. The best wine that I tried was their 2016 Groth ‘Oakville Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 95) which is massive and dense, yet shows amazing elegance and restraint. This ifs one for any serious collector of Napa Cabernet. Learn more about this great historic winery at https://www.grothwines.com Here are the fantastic new bottling by Groth.

Groth April 2020.jpg

The palate has gobs of mouth-watering acidity and wonderfully juicy melon, Granny Smith apple and citrus rind flavors. The wonderful sense of minerality and long finish accentuate this fantastic new wine. Drink 2020-2025- 92

2018 Groth ‘Hillview Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The ‘Hillview Vineyard’ Chardonnay is another impressive effort from this storied Napa estate. Once on the nose you are greeted shades of Pink Lady apple woven together with vanilla cream and lemon zest tones that all mingle in the glass. The palate shows off a seamless texture and voluptuous mouthfeel. Bright acidity lines the core of orchard fruits with lighter melon and starfruit tones. This finishes long with vanilla cream. Fantastic to savor right now, the 2018 ‘Hillview Vineyard’ Chardonnay will cellar well over the next decade, picking up lovely tertiary tones as it ages. Drink 2020-2030- 92

2016 Groth ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2016 Groth ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a seriously good new effort from this estate. On the nose this takes on deep layers of dark fruits that collide with black tea, exotic spices and damp loam tones that all meld in the glass. The soft mouthfeel entices, as the wine takes on a highly elegant edge. Creme de cassis, mocha, anise and Asian spices come together marvelously on the palate. With light tannins and really good length, this beautiful wine has some serious aging potential. Drink 2020-2035- 92

2016 Groth ‘Oakville Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon-  Groth Vineyards & Winery has crafted Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon since 1982. Family owned since their inception, they sustainably farm 121 acres of vineyards. Head winemaker Cameron Parry has been at the Groth helm since 2014. Inky in the glass, the 2016 Groth ‘Oakville Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a simply awesome new wine by Perry. Needing a one hour decant to fully evolve, the wine slowly unveils layers of cassis, Turkish coffee, exotic spices and shades of tar that all take shape in the glass. The palate is plush, showing a seamless quality that runs through the core of the wine. While obviously intense with its massive core of dark fruits, black licorice and tar, the elegance of the wine is astounding. If enjoying in its youth be sure to give this at least a two hour decant. This is a masterpiece by Groth. Drink 2022-2040- 95

Walter Scott

April 16, 2020

It has been several years since I had done a full rundown of one of the great producers of Chardonnay in North America. I was blown away with the overall quality of the wines. Their ‘Willamette Valley’ bottling are amongst the best that I have had from any Oregon winery. Their story begins in 2008 with the leap of faith that Erica Landon and Ken Pahlow made following the recession, forming Walter Scott Wines. Many years in the making, the name Walter Scott honors two important men in Ken’s life: Walter, Ken's grandfather, was a flight engineer for Trans World Airlines and Scott, Ken's nephew who passed away young and reminded both Ken and Erica that life can be exceedingly short. Their first vintage was produced in 2009 at Patricia Green Cellars and in 2011, Walter Scott began making Chardonnay, which was met immediately with seriously good critical acclaim. The rest has been history.

The new lineup of Walter Scott Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were spectacular. An amazing value, their 2018 Walter Scott ‘Cuvee Anne’ Chardonnay (WWB, 92) has marvelous freshness and verve, showing off a silky texture. This has some marvelous cellaring potential. The best wine I tried was the simply thrilling 2018 Walter Scott ‘X Novo Vineyard’ Chardonnay (WWB, 95) which is up there with the best in Oregon. This thrilling joyride is marvelously structured and textured, with flinty tones reminiscent of a great cru Dauvissat Chablis (also recently tasted). One thing is certain — buy these gorgeous wines with confidence. Learn more at https://www.walterscottwine.com I bring you my tasting notes from the beautiful new lineup of Walter Scott wines.

Walter Scott 2020 lineup.jpg

2018 Walter Scott ‘Cuvee Anne’ Chardonnay- The ‘Cuvee Anne’ was aged in 350 and 500 liter oak barrels (40% new) for twelve months before bottling. Sourced from five separate Willamette Valley vineyard, this opens with lovely flinty tones that mingle with shades of nectarine rind and poached pear that all meld in the glass. The palate is beautifully textured with a bright sense of minerality that runs through the core of orchard fruits and lemon cream flavors. Seriously good right now, I can see the ‘Cuvee Anne’ cellaring well for a decade to come. Drink 2020-2030- 92

2018 Walter Scott ‘Freedom Hill Vineyard’ Chardonnay- Planted in 1981 by Dan and Helen Dusschee, the ‘Freedom Hill Vineyard’ is one of the older sites for Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley. The wine was aged in 40% new French oak for twelve months before bottling. A dusting of volcanic soil greets you immediately as layers of lemon zest and bright pear all come together aromatically in the glass. The palate has great freshness and verve with a silky texture and gobs of lip-smacking acidity. Bright lemon rind and unripe melon flavors connect with wet stone and wild mushroom accents. A complete wine, the 2018 ‘Freedom Hill Vineyard’ Chardonnay will age gracefully for many years to come. Drink 2020-2033- 93

2018 Walter Scott ‘Seven Springs Vineyard’ Chardonnay- One of the iconic vineyards in Oregon, the ‘Seven Springs Vineyard’ is located in the Eola-Amity hills and is set on Nekia clay. This wine was sourced from vines that are facing south which protects them from afternoon heat. Avennia

April 16, 2020

One of the outstanding producers in the Woodinville area, Avennia is led by the team of former Microsoft executive Marty Taucher and superstar winemaker Chris Peterson. For those less familiar with Avennia, Chris Peterson served as DeLille Cellars winemaker for many years prior to starting Avennia. Chris has a signature winemaking style that deftly walks the tightrope between richness and structure. He also has a tendency to truly shape a wine based on what the vintage provides — which is clearly evident in the rich, tremendous new lineup of wines from 2017 which was another warm vintage in Washington.  I absolutely loved these new wines across the board.

The downright sexy new Rose, their 2019 Avennia ‘L’Egerie’ Rose (WWB, 92) has massive finesse and great length. Do not miss out on their new 2018 Avennia ‘Oliane’ Sauvignon Blanc (WWB, 93) which is one of the best Sauvignon Blanc wines made from Washington. The same is true with their new Rhone white blend, the silky 2018 Avennia ‘La Perle’ White Wine (WWB, 93) which has tremendous texture and insanely good range. I was totally blown away with their Cabernet Franc wine, the 2017 Avennia ‘Champoux Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc (WWB, 95) which is one of the best of its kind in the state and shows gorgeous violet aromatics. Learn more about these stunning new wines at avennia.com. Here are my reviews of the beautiful new Avennia wines.

Avennia April 2020.jpg

2019 Avennia ‘L’Egerie’ Rose- Sourced from the Columbia Valley, this beautiful, salmon hued Rose opens with shades of wild mushroom and damp earth that mingle with delicate red cherry and cranberry aromas that meld in the glass. The palate is refined and marvelously texture, yielding a soft mouthfeel and a seamless quality. Copious minerals dance with delicate red fruits and rose water flavors on the palate. The length of the wine make this truly sing. Drink 2020-2025- 92

2018 Avennia ‘Oliane’ Sauvignon Blanc- Sourced from the esteemed Boushey and Red Willow Vineyards in the Yakima Valley, the ‘Oliane’ was aged in a combination of natural and new French oak as well as a small portion being fermented in concrete eggs prior to bottling. Aromatically this shows considerably better at a higher temperature as lemongrass, honeydew melon and layers of baked apple with baking spices all come together nicely in the glass. The palate is rich and viscous with a seamless quality that runs through the core of the wine. Layered and complex, this delightful wine will cellar well over the next decade, picking up earthy and nutty tones as it ages gracefully. Drink 2020-2029- 93

2018 Avennia ‘La Perle’ White WIne- A compelling blend of Roussanne (65%) and Marsanne (35%) the ‘La Perle’ shows beautiful aromatic range from beeswax to nectarine rind and shades of wild mushroom and honeydew melon. The mouthfeel and texture is just sensational as layers of cantaloupe, wild mushroom and nutmeg infused sourdough bread with a lovely mineral undertones all seamlessly come together on the palate. Every bit outstanding, the 2018 ‘La Perle’ is gorgeous now to enjoy in its youth and will surely have a long life ahead of it. Be sure to enjoy this at a warmer temperature as this great wine drinks better out of a Burgundy glass than a Rhone style glass. Drink 2020-2029- 93

2017 Avennia ‘Valery’ Red Wine- A gorgeous Right Bank style blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 ‘Valery’ opens with a highly perfumed bouquet of red currants and Black Forest Cake with a light dusting of white pepper and espresso bean that all come together in the glass. The palate is not only silky smooth but shows great elegance, finesse and viscosity. The weight of the wine really provides a layer of hedonistic enjoyment as bright Bing cherry and mocha flavors come together with shades of sandalwood, exotic spices and black tea on the palate. Fresh and vibrant, yet having great richness, this beautiful wine will enjoy a long life ahead of it. Try to give this a two hour decant if enjoying in its youth. Drink 2020-2038- 94

2017 Avennia ‘Champoux Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc- The gorgeous ‘Champoux Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc is a certified heavyhitter by superstar winemaker Chris Peterson. On the nose this takes on layers of violets woven together with blackberry torte, black tea and Asian spices that sing in unison in the glass. Try to give this at least a two hour decant if enjoying in its nascent phase. Drink 2021-2038- 95

2017 Avennia ‘Sestina’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The ‘Sestina’ by Avennia is another sensational bottling from this famed Woodinville winery. Guillaume Fabre is the talented winemaker behind Benom wines.

Benom

April 15, 2020

Friends, today we travel down south to Paso Robles, paying homage to the postponement of one of the world’s great wine festivals, Hospice du Rhone. A brand new winery that is gaining serious momentum, Benom Wines, founded by two Frenchmen, Arnaud and Guillaume Fabre. Benom is named after the phonetic translation of the French word binôme, which translates to "a project together." They are brothers, they are French, and for them making wine is a heritage. Guillaume, moved to California to pursue a career as a winemaker, and began making wine for one of the great brands of Paso Robles, L’Aventure. He then started Clos Selene which was met with serious critical acclaim.  it was his love of winemaking and farming without limit(s) that brought him to Paso Robles. Arnaud, on the other hand, moved to California to follow his beloved Chloe. Their wines are even named after each other, two brothers -‘Les Deux Freres,’ which is an intense blend made from Grenache, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Fabre family originates from both the Languedoc-Roussillon and Bordeaux regions in France, as the brothers have a longstanding family history in the wine industry. I was totally captivated by the new wines by Benom. Their new 2019 Benom ‘L’Essor’ Rose (WWB, 92) is silky, with serious range and minerality. This really needs a warm patio to enjoy. A massive blend that has incredible range and texture, the 2017 Benom ‘Les Deux Freres’ Red Wine (WWB, 95) is a true heavyhitter of a wine that has tremendous verve and a massive core of dark fruits with shades of blood orange. I am very excited to see how these two brothers evolve their beautiful wines as they have a serious ceiling. Learn more about this great new winery project at https://www.benomwines.com Here are the beautiful new wines by Benom.

2019 Benom ‘L’Essor’ Rose- Made from mostly Grenache (66%) grapes, with the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon, the Benom ‘L’Essor’ shows pretty cantaloupe with white rose and green apple tones on the nose. Showing off its silky texture, the ‘L’Essor’ is very serious Rose that needs a hot summer day. Drink 2020-2025- 92

2019 Benom ‘Contrast’ White Wine- Sourced from the Central Coast, the ‘Contrast’ is a silky blend of Chardonnay (64%) and Sauvignon Blanc (36%) that was aged in 30% new oak for 6 months before bottling. Nutty and melon tones connect with shades of gooseberry on the nose. The palate is ripe, showing a wonderfully soft texture and soft mouthfeel. Layers of orchard fruits collide with melon and lighter wild mushroom tones. This is seriously good stuff. Drink 2020-2027- 93

2017 Benom ‘Les Deux Freres’ Red Wine- The ‘Les Deux Freres’ is a compelling blend of mainly Grenache (56%) with smaller portions Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged for eighteen months in French oak prior to bottling. The gorgeous aromatics bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment, as layers of sandalwood and Bing cherry preserves mingle with the chocolate, damp earth and coffee ground tones on the nose. The palate has great freshness and verve, with a serious tension that runs through the core of the wine. Spicecake and shades of black licorice and blood orange zest are woven together with mocha, anise and creme de cassis on the palate. The combination of freshness and tension in the wine is sensational. While a delight to enjoy right now, the 2017 ‘Les Deux Freres’ Red Wine will cellar well for decades to come. Drink 2020-2035- 95

Leonetti Cellar

April 14, 2020

As part of Walla Walla Wine Month we share one of the great historic Washington wineries, Leonetti Cellar was founded by eminent winemaker Gary Figgins in 1977. At the time he was the first Washington winery to by highly acclaimed as his 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon was named top Cabernet of the year by Wine & Spirits magazine. I have been enchanted with the aging potential of these wines over the year.

Leonetti 2012 Merlot.jpg

I have had the pleasure to sample several older Leonetti wines and I can say that these age as well as any Washington producer. More recently I have tried their 2008 Leonetti Merlot which is really only starting to come together with its pillowy mouthfeel. This thing has more than a decade of life ahead of it. The same is true for the thrilling 2012 Leonetti Merlot which is incredibly youthful at the eight year mark. This beauty evolved magically over five plus hours, showing nice cedar and pipe tobacco tones to go alongside with its decadent dark and red fruits with a opulent texture.

I recently had the chance to review the new set of releases by Leonetti and was completely blown away with the quality in the bottle. For those who are a bit less familiar, Leonetti sources from great Walla Walla vineyards including their own Leonetti Old Block, as well as Mill Creek Upland, Loess vineyards and their Holly Roller Vineyard in the Walla Walla Rocks AVA. Their new releases were largely from the warm 2017 vintage — one that was warmer and that generally had consistent, warm weather.

I was absolutely blown away with the 2017 Leonetti Cellar Sangiovese (WWB, 95) which rivals anything in North America with its silky texture and impressive range of flavors and aromatics. Even better was the scintillating 2017 Leonetti Cellar‘Reserve’ Red Wine (WWB, 98) which has amazing richness and intensity. This wine is only an infant and really needs a few more years of bottle age. Learn more about these beautiful new release wines at http://leonetticellar.com Here are the impressive new lineup of wines from Leonetti Cellar.

Leonetti April 2020.jpg

2017 Leonetti Cellar Sangiovese- The 2017 Leonetti Cellar Sangiovese is a stellar new wine that is amongst the best of its kind in North America. Chris Figgins has proclaimed that this is the best Sangiovese that he has made since the 2005 vintage and I find it hard not agree with that contention. Aged for twenty two months in a combination of new and used French oak, and oval botti, the 2017 Sangiovese needs an hour decant to fully be aroused. After some time in the decanter, the wine slowly unveils layers of sandalwood and tart cherry with sagebrush, cardamom and kumquat aromas that all meld in the glass. The palate is remarkably textured and has tremendous weight and verve. Black Forest Cake flavors take you by surprise, as earthy undertones, and citrus rind accents all round out this expressive palate. Moderately tannic, this simply sumptuous new wine has incredible aging potential and really shouldn’t be touched for at least another two years. This is quite simply a masterpiece by superstar winemaker Chris Figgins. Drink 2022-2040- 95

Cocoa powder dusted red cherries greet you, while flavors of underbrush, damp earth and espresso bean all enliven the senses. A complete wine, the 2018 Leonetti Cellar Merlot will enjoy a long life in the cellar. Try to resist this stunning new wine for at least another two years. Drink 2022-2040- 95

2017 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2017 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon is a scintillating new wine from this storied Walla Walla estate. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot this wine was aged for twenty two months in a combination of  new French oak barrels, once-filled French oak barrels, and neutral oval botti. Sourced from the Seven Hills, Loess, Holy Roller and Mill Creek Upland vineyards, the Cabernet opens with sandalwood aromatics that mingle with suggestions of dark chocolate covered espresso bean, creosote and wild blackberry cobbler that all take shape in the glass. The seamless texture is truly gorgeous, as layers of black fruits combine with dark chocolate and tar flavors, with nice silty undertones. Vibrant minerality and light tannins frame this expressive new effort. A delight to savor even at this stage, the 2017 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon will enjoy an exceedingly long life ahead of it. If enjoying over the next several years, be sure to give this at least a two hour decant before enjoying. Drink 2022-2040- 96

2014 Leonetti Cellar ‘Serra Pedace Vineyard’ Aglianico- Sourced from the ‘Serra Peace Vineyard’ in the Walla Walla Valley, the 2014 Leonetti Aglianico is a massive, dense beast of a wine that needs a lot of air to be tamed. Needing a two to three hour decant at this frame, the wine slowly unveils layers of coffee grounds and boysenberry preserves that mingle with Earl Grey tea and lighter cocoa powder accents that all mingle in the glass. The palate has silky tannins that line a massive core of dark fruits, sagebrush, Turkish coffee and suggestions of smoked brisket. The flavor range here is sensational. With its bright acidity and deep flavors, the 2014 Leonetti Cellar Aglianico is a truly one of a kind wine that will cellar well for decades to come. Drink 2022-2040- 95

2017 Leonetti Cellar ‘Reserve’ Red Wine- The 2017 Leonetti Cellar ‘Reserve’ Red Wine is a thrilling, dense, monster of a wine from superstar winemaker Chris Figgins. Judging only from the color and the weight of this wine, it is no surprise that there is a massive amount of Petit Verdot blended in as the wine checks in at 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Petit Verdot and 10% Malbec. Needing a two hour decant to be fully expressive, once aroused the ‘Reserve’ slowly unveils layers of dark fruits with green bell pepper, sagebrush and blueberry compote tones that all march together in the glass. The palate is dense, seamless and downright hedonistic. Medium tannins line the core of blueberry pie, mocha, Asian spices and silty undertones with a gorgeous combination of mouthfeel and tension. Truly one of a kind in the state, the 2017 Leonetti ‘Reserve’ will cellar well for decades to come. Try to resist this scintillating new release for at least two to three more years. A true heavyhitter, the 2017 ‘Meteor Vineyard’ will be singing for decades to come. Drink 2022-2040- 95

Epoch

April 13, 2020

It is only fitting that we lay tribute to one of Paso Robles’s great wineries. Many of us were saddened to hear that Hospice du Rhone will be postponed for another year. I was very much looking forward to my pilgrimage down south to try some of the best Rhone style wines the world has to offer. I have long admired Epoch wines based out of Paso Robles. Regardless of vintage, Epoch wines thrive in the warmest and coolest of vintages. I have been particularly impressed how they have navigated the run of very warm vintages which began in 2012 and has continued with their latest releases. The wines are obviously quite dense but have a good degree of tension and freshness.

Superstar winemaker, Jordan Fiorentini, has been crafting some incredible wines for Epoch. Her new wines were largely sourced from the warm, 2016 vintage that saw an early harvest. While some wineries suffered damage from heat, Jordan’s wines have good richness but also show excellent poise as well. Her 2016 Epoch ‘Veracity’ Red Wine (WWB, 94) is a blend of mainly Mourvedre and Grenache. It is a stunning rendition with its smoky tones and bright red fruits. Even better is the 2016 Epoch ‘Estate’ Red Wine (WWB, 95) which is an unusual blend of mostly Rhone varietals and has incredible depth and texture. L’Ecole No. 41

April 10, 2020

It was a warm summer day as I walked over to one of the famed wineries of the Pacific Northwest, L’Ecole No. 41. As the sun gleamed in the bright blue sky, I entered the historic schoolhouse building as I had many times before. L’Ecole No. 41 was one of the first wineries that I ever set foot in. My first visit was in 2002 while I was a senior at Whitman College and I fondly recall the casual atmosphere where such a great range of wines were poured. That hot summer day would be a bit more serious as I embarked on a fantastic voyage back into time to revisit some older vintages of the wines.

It is no surprise that L’Ecole has produced another wonderful set of releases, ranging from crisp Chardonnay to rich Merlot. Marty Clubb serves as managing winemaker and oversees all vineyard management. Winemaker Marcus Rafanelli has recently taken over for Mike Sharon, having some large shoes to fill. L’Ecole makes a ton of different wines as both Marty and Marcus oversee over 90 lots of wine each year.

I was hugely impressed with the new 2018 L’Ecole No. 41 ‘Luminesce’ White Wine (WWB, 91) which is an incredible value and has a great combination of poise and richness. L’Ecole has built a very strong reputation for their Chardonnay over the years. L’Ecole has been improving their Rose program and their 2019 L’Ecole No. 41 Rose (WWB, 91) is downright awesome with its silky texture and pretty red fruits. Even better is their gorgeous 2017 L’Ecole No. 41 ‘Ferguson Vineyard’ Red Wine (WWB, 94) which has massive tension and a great core of dark fruits, with lovely stony undertones from this famed vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. Carl Bowker crafts some incredible new wines for Caliza.

Carl Bowker crafts some incredible new wines for Caliza.

Caliza

April 8, 2020

Today we venture south to Paso Robles to share one of the outstanding producers that is relatively new to the game. Last year I had the chance to visit with the talented Caliza winemaker and co-proprietor Carl Bowker. Over the past several years I have been really impressed with these wines. His wines have been steadily improving over the years, as he has faced some challenging, super hot vintages where bright acidity is difficult to attain.

Spanish for “limestone" Caliza has a 20-acre vineyard largely set on limestone soils. The vineyard is predominantly comprised of hillsides with south-facing slopes which leads to maximum sun exposure. Set at 900-1200 feet above sea level in Templeton Gap area, the vineyard faces strong diurnal shifts which creates some nice tension in the wines. It is clear that planting so high has really helped the wines, particularly in the recent hot vintages.

Caliza’s vineyard was planted near L’Aventure and Booker which has proven to be a really good investment. Carl Bowker graduated from Napa Valley College’s Viticulture and Enology associate program in 2004. He has crafted an absolutely awesome new 2019 Caliza ‘Pink’ Rose (WWB, 91) which has a wonderful tension and length. This is a gorgeous summer sipper. The 2017 Caliza Grenache (WWB, 93) is a stunning wine that has a great combination of range and bright acidity with a long, lingering finish. Herman Story

April 7, 2020

Every great wine has a creative genius behind it. Russell P. From is the creative genius behind Herman Story wines. Russell grew up visiting his grandfather’s farm in eastern Missouri, driving a tractor and generally getting into whatever trouble he could find. Over time Russell grew very fond of the outdoors. Growing up in the East Bay of San Francisco, Russell attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, studying agricultural business, harkening back to his days visiting that Missouri farm.

He caught the wine bug at a very early age, interning at Lockwood Vineyards in his Freshman year of college he has never looked back, now working over 25 harvests. HIs winery, Herman Story, began in 2001 and has received great critical acclaim since its inception in 2002. Having tried these wines over the past decade, the style tends to be a bold, unbridled style of winemaking that full-throttle and hedonistic.

Nearly two years ago my college, Dr. Jae Hong, and I tasted at the winery and we were both blown away with the overall quality of the lineup. Such is true with the new wines, mostly coming from the 2017 vintage in Paso Robles which was very warm and some feared some heat damage from the super high August temperatures. These wines were all exceedingly rich and decadent but also showed excellent acidity.  The 2017 Herman Story ‘Larner Vineyard’ Red Wine (WWB, 93) is a stunning wine that has good brightness and wonderful density. I was blown away with the 2017 Herman Story ‘White Hawk Vineyard’ Syrah (WWB, 93) which is a massive and intense wine that has everything you would expect from a great Paso Syrah. We had a gorgeous tasting at Panther Creek.

We had a gorgeous tasting at Panther Creek.

Panther Creek

April 7, 2020

Years ago a change was needed at Panther Creek. Tony Rynders got the call to take over their winemaking program. Speaking to Tony about this, he was excited at the opportunity. Having already consulted for many Oregon wineries, Tony set out to craft some very special single vineyard Pinot Noirs with his signature style — wines that exude great texture, richness and minerality. I have been floored to see what he has done with these wines. The main thing I haven noticed is their consistency across the board and also quality in their entry level bottling, the ‘Winemaker’s Cuvee’ which has been really good since he first took over the program.

For those who are less familiar with Panther Creek, it is one of the great historic Oregon wineries. Panther Creek was originally founded by famed winemaker Ken Wright in 1986 who gained national attention for his wines sourced from the Freedom Hill and Shea Vineyards. In 1994 Mark Vlossak of St. Innocent fame took over as consulting winemaker and produced some marvelous wines until he focused his talents on his own winery. The winery was acquired by Bacchus Capital in 2013 which led to the appointment of superstar winemaker Tony Rynders as consulting winemaker. If you haven’t had the chance to check out these new wines since 2013, they are definitely worth a visit.

For the second year in a row Tony has crafted a gorgeous Panther Creek ‘Winemaker’s Cuvee’ Pinot Noir (WWB, 92), this rendition coming from the 2018 vintage and magically captures the art of blending several Willamette Valley vineyards.  I am really impressed with the 2017 Panther Creek ‘Kalita Vineyard’ Pinot Noir (WWB, 93) as this has tremendous freshness and verve alongside a core of red fruits and earthy undertones. Learn more about these great new wines at at http://www.panthercreekcellars.com Here are the outstanding new wines by Panther Creek.

It is full-bodied and far from subtle but has a vibrant acid backbone keeping everything marvelously in place. Enjoy this in the short-term while the brightness remains. Drink 2020-2027- 92

2017 Panther Creek ‘De Ponte Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- Located in the Dundee Hills AVA, the De Ponte Vineyard has long been producing fantastic, dark=fruit driven Pinot Noirs. Silky smooth on the palate, this shows off a soft texture and wonderfully plush mouthfeel. Layers of dark fruits meld with shades of peat moss, and minerals. Delightful to enjoy in its youth, the 2017 ‘De Ponte Vineyard’ will have another decade or more in the cellar. Drink 2020-2030- 93

Prothro Family Wines

April 7, 2020

Bruce Prothro is living the American dream. A chemist by trade, Bruce and his wife, Ronda became interested in wine at the start of their relationship. Their first date was wine tasting in Napa and one year later they were married. In 1991, Bruce and Ronda began making their own wine by purchasing Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay grapes from a vineyard in the Russian River Valley that supplied grapes to DeLoach Winery. With no formal training, they borrowed and rented equipment to crush, ferment, and press almost two tons of grapes, yielding nearly 120 gallons of barrel-aged wine. Even though they made a few mistakes that first year, the wine was a hit among their friends and family and became a staple at their parties and get togethers.

Over the next seven years they made wine out of their garage. Along the way they had help from several heavyweight figures in California wine including Burt Williams at Williams Selyem, Dexter and Val Ahlgren at Ahlgren Vineyards, Ken Burnap at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyards, Kent Rosenbloom and Jeff Cohn at Rosenbloom Cellars, and the crew at David Bruce Winery.

Their dream has become a reality as their first wine, the 2014 Prothro Family Wines Cabernet Sauvignon was met with critical acclaim. I have tried these wines over several years and have been very impressed with what I have seen. Their new lineup is downright awesome. I loved the 2017 Prothro Family Wines ‘Stagecoach Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc (WWB, 92) which has delightful blue fruits and great aging potential. Even better is their 2016 Prothro Family Wines ‘Heritage Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 93) which is a deep and hedonistic wine that will cellar well for decades to come. Shane Moore crafts some beautiful new wines for Gran Moraine.

Shane Moore crafts some beautiful new wines for Gran Moraine.

Gran Moraine

April 6, 2020

One of the outstanding houses in Oregon, Gran Moraine is named after the cataclysmic floods that occurred in the northern Willamette Valley of Oregon during the last ice age. As the flood waters receded, they impacted the region, leaving small indentations or mini valleys (moraines), similar to those in the the Côte ’Or in Burgundy. Located in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, Gran Moraine has 220 acres planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

At the helm is winemaker Shane Moore who is an Idaho native has a bachelor of science in enology and viticulture from Washington State University and previously spent three years gaining international winemaking experience in Canada, Western Australia and Israel’s Golan Heights. In 2011 Shane began working for Jackson Family Wines winemaking team as an enologist, crafting cool climate California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Shane helped build the Gran Moraine winemaking team and was named winemaker in 2016.

I really enjoyed his new wines. A downright awesome new Pinot Noir, 2016 Gran Moraine Pinot Noir (WWB, 92) has great length and richness, with a marvelous vein of tension. Learn more about this fantastic winery at https://www.granmoraine.com Here are the great new releases by Gran Moraine.

2016 Gran Moraine ‘Yamhill-Carlton’ Chardonnay- The 2016 Gran Moraine Chardonnay is an outstanding wine that was aged for fifteen months in a combination of French oak barrels and stainless steel before bottling. Toasty brioche, Macadamia nut and shades of Pink Lady apple all fill the nose. The palate is beautifully balanced with a vibrant sense of acidity. With marvelous length, this beautiful bottling will be best enjoyed over the next seven to ten years. Drink 2020-2027- 91

2016 Gran Moraine ‘Yamhill-Carlton’ Pinot Noir- The 2017 Gran Moraine Pinot Noir underwent 20% whole cluster fermentation before being aged for ten months in French oak barrels (32% new). The palate shows wonderful brightness and verve with a vibrant sense of minerality. Ripe dark cherry, rose water, blood orange zest and tobacco leaf flavors combine with the damp earth and peat tones tones on the palate. This shows seriously good range for the price as this beautiful wine will cellar well over the next decade. Drink 2020-2030- 92

Beautiful new lineup of Audeant wines.

Beautiful new lineup of Audeant wines.

Audeant

April 6, 2020

Occasionally I find it imperative to tell a winery story as soon as I try their wines. Yesterday in my tasting set I tried wines from a new Oregon winery and was massively impressed with what I saw in the glass. The degree of tension in the wines and sterling sense of mineralty, while providing a soft, supple texture rang true in this small set of wines.

Andrew Reichers reached out to me several weeks ago, telling his story in wine. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, he has a long-standing history in the wine industry, originally starting his career with helping with wine production in Santa Barbara at a bulk wine facility. Andrew was the first employee at Sanguis under epic winemaker Matthias Pippig and has also spent time in New Zealand, at Burn Cottage, and in Burgundy in the Haute Cote working for Claire Naudin at Domaine Naudin Ferrand. More recently Andrew has served for five years as the assistant winemaker at Antica Terra and Lillian with Maggie Harrison prior to joining and founding Audeant Wines with Proprietor, Teal Walker, in 2016. Needless to say, Andrew has a very impressive resume, and it shows in what you taste in the glass.

One of the great Rose wines that I have sampled so far out of Oregon, from the 2018 vintage is the Audeant Rose (WWB, 91) which has a silky texture and impressive aromatic and flavor range. Even better is the dazzling 2017 Audreant ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir (WWB, 93). Andrew has now worked his seventeenth harvest, and eleventh in Oregon. I will be excited to see how his wines evolve moving forward. Learn more about this exciting new winery at https://www.audeant.com Here are the beautiful new wine releases by Audeant.

2018 Audeant Rose- Very delicate red fruits and rose water and a light stony character line the nose. The palate has good freshness and a silky texture. The bright acidity impresses as lighter citrus rind and guava flavors combine with wet stone accents. I love the range here, as the mouth-watering acidity completes this great new wine. Drink 2020-2024- 91

2017 Audeant ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir- This entry level bottling opens with spiced red fruits that dance with shades of Mandarin orange zest and peat moss tones that all collect momentum in the glass. The palate shows bright acidity alongside a beautiful core of red fruits that mingle with minerals, wild mushroom and blood orange undertones.  This is seriously good stuff that is best enjoyed in its youth, while the brightness remains. Drink 2020-2027- 92

2017 Audeant ‘Luminous Hills Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The ‘Luminous Hills Vineyard’ Pinot Noir is an outstanding new release by Audeant. Bright Bing cherries and peat moss tones jump right out of the glass, with citrus rind accents rounding out this expressive nose. The palate shows vibrant acidity with a silky mouthfeel and wonderful texture. The seamless quality of the wine is apparent. Gorgeous to enjoy in its youth, this beautiful wine will cellar well for a decade or more. Drink 2020-2033- 93

2017 Audeant ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- Deeply colored once in the glass, the ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir shows bright dark cherry and volcanic terroir on the nose. The palate has wonderful viscosity, tension and length, with a long, blackberry and mineral-driven finish. The stony, terroir really comes through nicely, connecting with the core of dark fruits. Fantastic to enjoy right now, the ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir will continue to provide drinking enjoyment for at least another decade. Drink 2020-2033- 93
