Here is the scintillating 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lokoya

December 14, 2023

Today we share one of the giants of Napa. Truly one of the great wines of this region, Lokoya began back in 1995 by Jackson Family Wines. The winery focuses on 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wines from mountain appellations. This was the vision of founder, Jess Jackson who always saw the promise for world-class mountain fruit Napa wines. Fast forward to 2013, Jackson Family Wines purchased the former Yverdon Vineyard and Winery from Terra Valentine owners Angus and Margaret Wurtele. The winery became the new location for Lokoya.

Wines are made by Chris Carpenter, one of the regions great winemakers. The 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 99) is a sight to be seen. Inky in the glass, this offers incredible flavor range and intensity from this great vineyard. It is also a pretty penny at $500.00 retail. Learn more about this famed wine at lokoya.com and here is my review of the incredible 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon.

2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon is a total heavyhitter of a wine that is a must-taste for any serious Napa aficionado. Aged in a combination of Taransaud and Seguin-Moreau oak barrels, this gorgeous bottling from Mt. Veeder offers insanely good aromatics of iodine, dark currants, Black Forest Cake and suggestions of graphite on the nose. The palate offers a seamless texture and massive concentration. Full-bodied, yet showing a fantastic sense of freshness, this is loaded with massive dark fruits that parade with espresso grounds, creme de violette and dark chocolate shavings all in unison. While obviously big and intense, this is drinking beautifully despite its youth — and will easily be a 25-30 year wine. Drink 2024-2047- 99

Here are the outstanding new Chardonnays by Domaine de la Riviere.

Domaine de la Riviere

December 14, 2023

It was back in 2011 that Marla and Geoff Bedrosian made the leap to follow their dreams and purchase a small Pinot Noir vineyard, in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley, named Vineyard eleven. The site is planted to a range of clonal selections including: Red Barn Block – Clones; UV Vosne-Romonée, Pommard and Swan in the Red Barn Block and Swan and Mount Eden in their Heritage Block. Their first harvest was completed in August 2017. They then followed by producing their first Rosé of Pinot Noir in April 2018 and later their first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2019.

This is now the second time that I have tasted these wines, the first being during my 2023 Sonoma Report back in March. I was really impressed with the wines that showed beautiful texture, weight and poise. The new wines I tasted come from the 2020 and 2021 vintages. They did a marvelous job mitigating the 2020 vintage, as I loved the 2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay (OB, 92) which was rich and viscous, coming off very clean. Even better is the 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay (OB, 93) which is more dense and shows some great aging potential. Learn more about this great boutique winery at https://domaineriviere.com/ and here are my reviews of the fantastic new Domaine de la Riviere wines.

2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- Coming from this esteemed site farmed by Kent Richie, this offers butterscotch and stony minerals on the nose with Meyer lemon zest. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture and great sense of verve. Full-bodied, and coming off very clean this is absolutely delicious stuff from a tough vintage. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Flora Marie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The Flora Marie Vineyard is a site located on a steep Ridgeline overlooking the Russian River. This is soft and approachable on the mouth, with layers of buttercream and poached pear alongside brioche notes. Drink now. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay- This Chardonnay comes from the Lone Oak Vineyard which utilizes 35 year old Wente clonal selection vines. Deeply colored, this is equally deeply concentrated, with ripe fig and Japanese pear flavors alongside shades of marzipan and nutty undercurrents. Really good now, enjoy over the next seven years to come. Drink 2023-2030- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay is a knockout effort that is already beautifully evolved at the near three year mark. It is seamless throughout the drinking experience with layers of banana, toasty oak, vanilla cream and shades of hazelnut on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next eight years. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Flora Marie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- This outstanding bottling comes from the Flora Marie Vineyard which is a scenic site neighboring the Russian River. This wine utilizes Montrachet clonal selection Chardonnay, as the wine is soft and refined once on the mid-palate. Layers of buttercream and allspice dusted pie crust combine with banana and suggestions of mango on the palate. The weight of this wine is impressive. Enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay- The 2021 ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay is another beautiful 2021 bottling by Domaine de la Riviere. This is beautifully textured stuff as you can sense the battonage. Ripe pear and juicy melon flavors mingle well with the underlying verve and kumquat zest tones. This is concentrated stuff that maintains good balance. It is quite frankly a joy to drink right now. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Two Forces’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Two Forces’ Pinot Noir comes from two separate Russian River Valley sites that are blended together. Deeply perfumed on the bouquet, this shows impressive red currant and black tea aromatics alongside loamy soils and suggestions of tart cranberry. The palate is soft and refined with a great sense of texture, and plenty of salty, damp soil character. This medium-bodied and earthy Pinot Noir is drinking marvelously right now. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Red Bar Block’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Red Bar Block’ comes from their estate vineyard and is named after the red barn that overlooks this block. Dark in the glass, this offers black cherry and pomegranate seed flavors alongside plenty of wet stone and damp earthy character on the palate. Already nicely evolved, enjoy now and over the next ten years to come. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Middle Reach Vineyards’ Pinot Noir- The ‘Middle Reach Vineyards’ combines Pinot Noir from the El Diablo and their estate Vineyard eleven. This is wonderfully earthy stuff with cran-pomegranate and black truffle shavings alongside freshly tilled salty soils on the palate. Nicely textured and well-balanced, enjoy now and over the next decade. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Heritage Block’ Pinot Noir- This 2021 Pinot Noir comes from a 3 acre parcel in their estate Vineyard eleven. The site is on a rolling hillside that sees a great deal of morning fog. Fresh and viscous, this has really great richness and underlying tension. Loaded with black and red fruit flavors, with salty and Mandarin orange rind accents, this is beautiful, age-worthy Pinot Noir that is also really enjoyable in its youth. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘El Diablo Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The El Diablo Vineyard is located on a high ridge that overlooks the Russian River Valley. This 2021 Pinot Noir opens with a beautiful bouquet of red rose petals alongside Bing cherry, loganberry and stony accents. The palate is plush and soft, with bright, mouth-watering acidity and a core of rich red fruit flavors. Enjoyable now, savor this beautiful Pinot Noir over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

This was one of the most beautiful ‘Grand Siecle’ wines I have ever tasted, their 26th edition.

The 10 Best Wines I Tasted In 2023

December 13, 2023

Dear Friends,

There are arguably no better experience than sharing wines with friends and family. Now being out of the Pandemic, we are finally able to enjoy these special experiences together. It is my hope that 2023 has brought you wonderful prosperity and many memorable moments with sharing wine with your loved ones whenever possible. We wanted to share some of the incredible wines that I was able to taste throughout 2023. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday season making many more memories with special wines and cherished relationships.

What were some of your favorite wines of 2023? Here are mine.

11) 2014 Louis Roederer ‘Cristal’ Champagne

I love Cristal and had to include this as my #11. There is something magical about this wine that is made beautifully in even super challenging vintages like 2007 and 2013. I have had the chance to revisit the 2014 ‘Cristal’ many times this year. It is a scintillating bottling that I think I might have even underscored when first reviewed, because of how tight it was. Now after about 20 to 30 minutes of air it really comes together seamlessly. Gobs of stuffing, lemon oil and beautiful tension make this wine one of the finest champagnes you will taste in the world. Bravo!

10) 1982 Chateau Mouton-Rothchild

It was such a pleasure to revisit one of the great wines of 1982, the magnificent Chateau Mouton-Rothchild. A friend graciously opened this bottle that is now at perfect peak. The mushroom and black fruits were really rocking here, but the texture was downright ethereal. This held on strong for an hour. What an experience!

9) 2005 Chateau D’YQuem Sauternes-

I have long held these wines as arguably the finest made in the world. Many years back I purchased several .375L bottles of the 2005 D’Yqyem. This was a dream right now especially in the small format. Yet for some reason I feel like the freshness imparted makes me feel that this might not quite be at peak? It is close to peak nonetheless. The honey and marzipan notes really rock, as this does not come off as overly sweet at all — just impeccably balanced. It is downright impossible to find a dessert wine bottling that has this flavor range.

8) 2008 Piper Heidseick ‘Rare’ Champagne

I love wines from great vintages. This year I had several bottles of the 2008 Piper Heidseick ‘Rare’ Champagne. The first bottle I had was very lightly corked and never fully came together. However subsequent bottles provided me with data that this is one of the outstanding wines made this vintage. Scintillating, polished and full of life, this is a big, burly Champagne that is going to pair with an insane range of foods. But if you are like me, I just prefer to drink this on its own and watch it beautifully evolve. What a wine!

7) Laurent-Perrier ’26 ed. Grand Siècle’ Champagne

I know this is another champagne on the list but this ’26 ed.’ might be the finest ‘Grand Siecle’ ever made. As a context, for my birthday this year I tasted editions 23-25 of ‘Grand Siecle.’ The ’23 ed.’ is shining brightly, mostly comprised of 2006 wines that are quite fleshy and delicious now. The ’26 ed.’ also has that incredibly dense character but is also possessing racy acidity and a very lengthy finish. Having tried this now four times I highly recommend a 30 minute decant to fully take in the downright scintillating range of flavors and aromatics.

6) 2021 HALL ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon

The ‘Rainin’ is one of the finest wines made in Napa that is part of the HALL Platinum Collection. Made in very small volume, this beauty was a total head-turner that I won’t forget. Opulent and soft, yet extremely powerful, words made it difficult to define how good this wine really was. This was nothing short of perfection in the bottle. It doesn’t come cheap but this will be worth a visit someday.

5) 2000 Dom Perignon ‘P2’ Champagne

We were in Vegas and we thought that a top Champagne would do the trick. I went downstairs to Wallys and purchased a super expensive bottle of ‘P2’ to mark the occasion. The first bottle was corked and the manager working there was less than impressed that I had found the first one to be flawed. It was quite honestly a horrible buying experience. I tried to explain to her that I am a wine critic who does this for a living.

To her chagrin, she agreed to give me a second bottle to replace the corked one. The second bottle was a total world-beater. Filled with stuffing and beautiful racy acidity, this showcased the richness and tension that the vintage provided. What a wine!

4) 2004 Charles Heidseick ‘Blanc des Millénaires’ Champagne

It has now been many years since I have had the chance to try this wine, coming from the really good 2004 vintage. At now twenty years of age, it is right at its peak. Blanc des Millénaires 2007 is now the current vintage and this edition is considerably richer with more flavor range, as the nutty and earthy character of the wine was really showing beautifully. The best part was I shared this with one of my best friends.

3) 2015 Chateau Angelus

It was on a whim that we decided to open a beautiful bottle of 2015 Chateau Angelus. Tasted with friends, we waited about two hours and saw this beautifully evolve. Pillowy and soft, this is still really an infant but the potential! I think this will easily be a 30 year wine. Perfection in a bottle.

2) 2012 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Grenache

This was a buy that I purchased online and you never know what you are getting with these buys. However, this wine was shining brightly for quite some time. A literal cornucopia of flavor meets this beauty, as the texture and freshness was so beautifully intact. I love when you drink a wine right at its peak and this was it for me! If you can’t afford Chateau Rayas, buy this!

1) 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon

I feel so fortunate that I was able to taste this wine over multiple days. This beauty is going to really rock your world. I think that it is the finest ‘Columbia Valley’ Quilceda ever made. I love to drink top Washington young to get a feeling for their aging potential. For a future release 100 point wine, offers already unbelievably good tasting experience that you won’t forget. I just tasted this on its own without food but the beautiful chocolate and coffee ground notes make me think what a seamless match this would be with bitter chocolate.

Here is the stunning 2021 ‘The Funk’ Syrah by Saviah Cellars.

Saviah Cellars

December 13, 2023

For years I have admired the wines by Saviah Cellars, run by two of the nicest people you will find in Washington wine. It is hard to believe that Saviah Cellars was founded all the way back in 2000, starting with only 300 cases produced. Today they particularly gain fame from their Syrah wines that are sourced from their two estate vineyards in the Walla Walla Rocks District. Saviah was started by winemaker Richard Funk and his wife, Anita, who are both natives of Montana who moved to Walla Walla in 1991 and later planted their first vineyard in 2001. Saviah is a family name from Anita’s great-grandmother, a schoolteacher, artist and author, who settled in western Montana in the early 1900s.

I love spending time with Richard. He has such a vast knowledge for his land and the industry. He crafts truly outstanding wines that also age really well. He has two outstanding estate vineyards in The Rocks District, ‘The Stones Speak’ and ‘The Funk Estate.’  With a foundation  in microbiology, Richard previously worked as the Environmental Health Specialist with the Walla Walla County Health Department and is a self-taught winemaker. Richard has assisted several wineries with their start-up processes and served as the winemaker for Watermill Winery from 2006-2009, àMaurice winery from 2005-2006 and also has served as a consulting winemaker for several new wineries.

I love the new wines across the board. Check out the 2019 The Jack Syrah (OB, 91) which is one of their value wines and this Syrah over performs for the price. I adored the new 2020 Saviah ‘The Funk Estate’ Syrah (OB, 95) which is a masterful effort from a tough vintage. 2021 Saviah ‘Une Vallee’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Une Vallee’ is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with smaller parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the Walla Walla Valley. It is rich and mineral-laden, with good underling tension and refined tannins. Dark currants collide with coffee grounds, rabbit brush and shades of tar and black licorice on the palate. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2021 2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful new bottling that shows the heat of the vintage. Sourced from a host of great sites including the Pepper Bridge Vineyard, this offers beautiful structure and balance on the palate. Not overly big despite the heat of the vintage, you can see each wonderful working part here. Sagbrush and stony notes combine with tilled soils, cigar box, ripe blackberry and dark chocolate shaving flavors. This is drinking beautifully in its youth. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Syrah- For an entry level Syrah, the 2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Syrah is a marvelous value. Aromatics of flint, iron and rich dark fruits all work seamlessly together on the nose. The palate is soft and round with great tension and flavor density. Layers of sandalwood mingle well with copious minerals, wild blackberry, black tea and exotic spices. Fresh and fragrant, this is already beautifully evolved stuff. Drink 2023-2031- 92

Deeply concentrated in the glass, this shows insanely good aromatic range from freshly picked red roses to potpourri, Asian spices, Umami, fresh sage and charcuterie notes alongside dense dark fruits. The palate is fresh and vibrant with great underlying tension and a smooth mouthfeel. As youthful as it is, this is really ready to go. Uncork one — you are going to be amazed. Drink 2023-2033- 95

2021 Saviah ‘The Funk’ Syrah- The 2021 ‘The Funk’ Syrah comes from this site set on ancient cobblestones. The nose is really expressive even at the two year mark, as potpourri and bacon fat notes combine with violets, fresh mint and suggestions of smoked brisket. The palate is soft and inviting with a smooth texture and great sense of weight. A glorious core of dark fruits greets you (think figs, dates, blackberries) alongside worn leather, menthol, wet stone and suggestions of cardamom laced prosciutto with green olive accents. Complex and highly delicious, this is drinking marvelously already. Drink 2023-2035- 96

2020 Saviah ‘The Funk Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon- Really great considering the challenges of the vintage, the 2020 ‘The Funk Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon is shining brightly in its core of dark fruits with chocolate fudge and sagebrush with flinty accents. Drink this beautiful wine now and over the next several years. Neatly textured, with good volume and flavor density, drain this beauty now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2028- 93

Here we have our top wine from 2023, the 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon.

Owen Bargreen Top 100 of 2023

December 12, 2023

Dear Friends,

I want to extend my warmest holiday greetings from Owen Bargreen. We are very humbled by your support and following. 2023 has been an electric year of world-class wines, incredible wine events and gatherings. It is so wonderful to share wine with friends and family once again. Wineries are still coming out of the fog from the Pandemic. I pride myself to work hard in promoting the great wines that I taste across the world. It has been a wonderful experience writing hundreds of my own articles for OwenBargreen.com

We will work hard to push more events that highlight the best wines of these regions in the future. Our 2023 Top 100 includes including many highly collectable wines but also wines that embody good value. 2021 was very good to the wines of the Willamette Valley, as this year we see in our Top 100 a record number of Oregon wines. Don’t miss out on those beautiful reds and whites from 2021. Out of thousands of wines that I tasted in the past year I adjudged several wines to be nothing short of perfection in a bottle. This year it was a very close call at the top. We have a new wine at our number 1 position for 2023. The 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect bottle that is arguably the finest wine of its kind ever made in Washington State. This is perfection for me and I hope you have a chance to try this beauty.

I want to offer my deepest thanks for all of your support and I want to wish you all a fruitful and safe holiday season. I wish you all a Happy Holidays and hope that 2024 brings you all great joy and prosperity, with beautiful wines in your glass.

1) 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Washington | Columbia Valley | $250.00 | 100 Points

The 2021 ‘Columbia Valley’ mainly comes from the Champoux Vineyard (90%) with the remainder coming from the Mach One Vineyard. A range of Cabernet Sauvignon clones are blended into this wine that spent 20 months in all new French oak before bottling. The aromatics really pop here with violets alongside potpourri and Turkish coffee, sandalwood, allspice dusted dates and shades of black licorice. The palate is generous, weightless and very generous as this is a total show stopper. Concentrated blue and black fruits with walnut, with creme de violette all brilliantly combine with the elegant mid-palate mouthfeel. Finishing extremely long, this is nothing short of perfection in a bottle. I don’t say this lightly but this is arguably the finest ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon that I have ever tasted. Give this three hours or more in the decanter if enjoying now. Drink 2024-2044- 100

2) 2021 Horsepower Vineyards ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache

Washington I Walla Walla Valley I $120 I 100 Points

Stony, salty and very savory, the stunning 2021 Horsepower Vineyards ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache is one of the great wines that I have tasted over the past year —and is nothing short of perfection in a bottle. Coming from this very tightly-spaced site set on cobblestones in Milton-Freewater, this nose can only be from one place in the world. Seaweed, wet gravel, anise, bacon fat and menthol notes all combine with pure pomegranate and red cherry fruits on the nose. The palate is extremely stony and salty, with loads of mouth-watering acidity. Finishing long, this memorable effort with serious nerve is already drinking beautifully now — but will cellar well over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 100

3) 2021 Kobayashi ‘Mizunera’ Cabernet Franc

Washington | Yakima Valley | $200.00 | 100 Points

This is now the second edition made of this wine following the incredible 2019 bottling. The 2021 ‘Mizunara’ is the only wine of its kind, as the barrel costs a whopping 8 thousand dollars including shipping. As one of the most expensive wines in Washington State, it is also one of the finest that you will find. Cedar and exotic spices combine in this downright explosive nose with red currants, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco and hints of fresh sage. Seamless and elegant, with serious savory notes, refined tannins and downright insane flavor range, you won’t find anything like this in the world. Try to procure a bottle if you can, as there are only 100 cases made. Drink 2023-2043- 100

4) 2020 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Red Wine

Oregon | Walla Walla Valley | $100.00 | 99 Points

Translucent in its core, the Grenache-dominant 2020 ‘God Only Knows’ Red Wine has a small amount of Syrah blended in. Sourced from the Armada Vineyard which was first planted back in 2001, this was stored in neutral oak for 21 months and weighs in at a mere 13.7% alcohol. The palate is exceedingly fresh, showing a sterling veil of tension on the mouth. Very pretty guava and cran-cherry fruit flavors combine with Hoisin sauce, tobacco leaf, wet rock and charcuterie board, with blood orange zest accents. This is incredibly clean wine considering the conditions at harvest. Generous and done in a slightly richer style than the 2019, this beauty is best enjoyed now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2028- 99

5) 2020 Force Majeure ‘Red Mountain’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Washington | Red Mountain | $120.00 | 99 Points

The 2020 ‘Red Mountain’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning new bottling that is showing beautifully even so young. Right now the wine is unbelievably good, with a brilliant combination of weight, texture and bright underlying acidity. A fantastic melange of black and blue fruits greet you on the palate, with chocolate, creosote and espresso ground accents. Give this plenty of air before consuming, as this beauty is already signing its high octane. Drink 2023-2033- 99

6) 2021 HALL ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon

California | Napa Valley | $350.00 | 100 Points

The 2021 ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from this small vineyard set on Diamond Mountain. This 8 acre site is set on iron rich volcanic soils on what was once a lush forest. Once on the nose this displays sweet pipe tobacco notes alongside espresso grounds, creme de violette and violets. Very inky and brooding in the glass, this takes on an opulent, pillowy texture once on the mouth that makes this truly a joy to drink. This powerful and dense yet very seamless throughout the drinking experience. Finishing exceedingly long, with heady dark and blue fruits, this stunning wine is nothing short of perfection in a bottle. Drink 2023-2045- 100

7) 2019 Devil Proof ‘Rockpile Ridge’ Malbec

California | Sonoma County | $275.00 | 100 Points

This site is set at 1400 and is very windy which creates very think skins on the Malbec berries. The 2019 ‘Rockpile Ridge’ Malbec opens with intense black licorice, blackberry compote, and espresso ground aromas. The palate is wonderfully stony with insanely good tension and mouthfeel — and a finish that literally will not stop. This is opulent, incredibly textured Malbec that is truly one of a kind. Drink 2023-2045- 100

8) 2021 Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘Foothills Reserve’ Syrah

Washington | Walla Walla Valley | $85.00 | 99 Points

A total masterclass, the 2021 ‘Foothills Reserve’ is a barrel selection wine that comes from the Reynvaan’s high elevation estate Foothills In The Sun Vineyard. The site is set on Loess soils with deep basalt deposits and I have been writing about the potential of this site for more than a decade. Today, wines from this high-elevation location are every bit as good as those from their Rocks District vineyard. Hoisin sauce, beef drippings, menthol, and shades of wild blackberry all combine on the nose. The palate is utterly seamless with serious tension, weight and mouth-watering acidity. It offers La Landonne levels of flavor complexity, yielding blood orange zest notes alongside red cherry candy, cigar ash, wet stone and pipe tobacco that all brilliantly meld together on the palate. Showing seriously good flavor and aromatic range, enjoy this simply stunning Syrah now and over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2037- 99

9) 2016 Chateau St. Michelle ‘Eroica Single Berry Select’ Riesling

Washington | Columbia Valley | $250.00/.375L | 99 Points

Without a doubt the top dessert wine produced in the Pacific Northwest (and arguably in North America), the Trockenbeerenauslese-inspired 2016 ‘Eroica Single Berry Select’ is another dazzling edition of this wine that flirts with perfection. Once on the nose this takes on a literal cornucopia of stunning aromatics. Honeysuckle, apricot jelly, vanilla creme brûlée, candied kumquat and ginger notes all combine on the nose. The palate is deep and penetrating yet comes off very weightless and displays a dazzling level of underlying finesse. Decadent and rich, this is going to be an epiphany wine for you to savor. Drink 2023-2045- 99

10) 2018 Domaine Serene ‘Monogram’ Pinot Noir

Oregon | Willamette Valley | $425.00 |  99 Points

The 2018 ‘Monogram’ is a stunning bottling that flirts with perfection as this is a knockout blend of Pinot Noir from the Grace, Mark Bradford and Cote Sud Vineyards. Stored in 70% new French oak, the 2018 ‘Monogram’ deftly embodies this warm vintage. Once on the nose this takes on roasted date, huckleberry, red rose water, peat moss, and shades of blood orange zest. The palate is soft and round with serious power and weight. Here are the beautiful new 2021 red wines by Devison.

Devison

December 11, 2023

Ever since I first met him at EFESTE, I knew that Peter Devison was a special talent. Openly obsessive about making fine wine, Peter has tried the great wines of the world many times over. This helps him craft some of the finest you will taste in Washington state.

Having a great history in the Washington wine industry, having been head winemaker at EFESTE prior to moving to Walla Walla and eventually starting his own brand with his wife, Kelsey. They are great people to spend time with. Peter is also making wines for Goose Ridge.

Like last years releases, the wines I tasted from 2021 were absolutely outstanding. I tasted only his red wines but his whites have always been truly amazing. I absolutely love the 2021 Devison ‘Phantom Lamb’ Syrah (OB, 95) which is hedonistic and intense — definitely not for the weary. Chris Sherry crafts some beautiful sparkling wines for Elentone.

Elentone

December 10, 2023

Today we explore a really electric sparkling wine house, Elentone, that is the brainchild of winemaker Chris Sherry. Sherry hails from Brighton in southern England, which is somewhat of a stone’s throw from England’s premier sparkling wine country. Sherry is an avid Brighton football supporter and shares the same passion for sparkling wines.

All of his wines are made in the traditional Champagne method and are given a limited dosage. I am really thrilled with the wines from Sherry that I have tasted in the past year. I have little doubt that they are going to get better and better. The 2019 Elentone ‘Noa Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 93) shows amazing salty character with really good stuffing. Learn more about these beautiful wines at elentone.com and here are the outstanding new wines by Elentone.

2019 Elentone ‘Brut’ Sparkling Wine- The 2019 ‘Brut’ is mostly Chardonnay coming from the Lake Chelan AVA. It was given zero dosage. You would not guess that based on the wine’s richness and texture. Baking spice laced pastry crust flavors mingle well with cashew nut and salty citrus fruits on the palate. Very refined, as this sat en tirage for three years, this is really at a good spot right now. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2020 Elentone ‘Willow Blanc de Noirs’ Sparkling Wine- A very pretty slightly pink hue, the 2020 Blanc de Noirs Sparkling Wine is brimming with richness from what was a really good vintage prior to the smoke event in September. This was picked before the smoke event and is a truly outstanding showing by winemaker Chris Sherry. Delicate red raspberry and teaberry notes combine with orange zest notes on the palate. Big, fleshy and rich, this is already drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2031- 92

Great photo here of Chris Peterson and Marty Taucher of Avennia.

Avennia

December 10, 2023

When I am tasting through the latest Avennia wines I typically post immediately on them because they are just so good. A premier producers of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, Avennia is a joint venture between former Microsoft exec Marty Taucher and winemaker Chris Peterson. These wines are incredibly consistent and extremely well-made.

Former DeLille Cellars Winemaker Chris Peterson crafts some beautiful, concentrated and well-structured wines for Avennia. I think he did an amazing job with his 2020 wines where many other producers did not fare as well. I love the new 2021 Avennia ‘Gravura’ Red Wine (OB, 93) which will only get better with time and shows lovely texture and weight from this warm vintage. Learn more about these special wines at avennia.com Here are my reviews of the new Avennia wines.

2021 Lydian Cabernet Sauvignon- The outstanding Lydian Cabernet Sauvignon showcases this warm vintage. It shows good ripeness and density from this vintage with a soft mouthfeel. Black currants and tobacco leaf combine with milk chocolate notes on the palate. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2021 Avennia ‘Gravura’ Red Wine- A killer wine from a great vintage, the 2021 ‘Gravura’ is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (46%) and Merlot (42%) with the remainder Cabernet Franc. It is rich and bold with a smooth mouthfeel that is really inviting. Cassis and sagebrush flavors line the palate, alongside coffee grounds and dark chocolate shavings. This is seriously good even at the two year mark. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Avennia ‘Champoux Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc- This fantastic 2021 Cabernet Franc comes from the famed Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. An inky tone in the glass, this offers violets and dark currants on the nose alongside sandalwood and espresso ground notes. The palate is plush and refined with a silky texture with fantastic concentration, verve and balance. This is up there with the finest Cabernet Franc you willl taste in Washington. Drink 2023-2038- 96

Here are the great new releases by Approachment Wine Co.

Approachment Wine Co.

December 7, 2023

Today we share another exciting new winery from the Pacific Northwest. Approachment was started by Jessica and Paden West who both have many years of industry experience. Jessica started her wine path working in wine shops and tasting rooms. After learning the sales portion of the business, Jessica acquired an internship in 2013 at Bethel Heights Vineyard working directly with Winemaker Ben Casteel and viticulture master Mimi Casteel. Entranced by the crafting side of the business, Jessica then entered the NW Wine Studies program to earn her degree in Winemaking. Paden grew up in the Willamette Valley and began his path in wine just as Jessica did -by working in wine shops and tasting rooms. In 2010, Paden was offered an internship at Penner-Ash, managed by Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and Assistant Winemaker Brian Irvine. After finding his fire for the winemaking side of the business, Paden also enrolled in the NW Wine Studies program…where his lab partner turned out to be Jessica West. The rest has been history.

The new wines are really good across the board. I love the 2022 ‘Point of Contact’ (OB, 91) which is beautifully textured and has great flavor range. Learn more at https://www.approachmentwines.com/ and here are my reviews of the great Approachment wines.

2022 Approachment ‘Point of Contact’ Pinot Gris- The 2022 ‘Point of Contact’ is a skin-contact Pinot Gris wine that shows a smooth mouthfeel and neat texture once on the palate. Flavors of red raspberry and pear combine with shades of guava on the palate. Fresh and vibrant, this is really well-done. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Approachment Gamay- The 2022 Approachment Gamay is very fresh with red rose petals and tilled soils on the nose alongside pretty red fruits. Light to medium-bodied, with a dazzling sense of tension, and fantastic mouthfeel, this is going to really impress you. Serve slightly chilled on the Thanksgiving table. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2022 Approachment Grenache- Coming from the Columbia Valley, this 2022 Grenache shows off a soft mouthfeel. Juicy red fruits follow with shades of sage and citrus rind notes. Drink 2023-2029- 91

Bree Stock, MW, is an incredible talent that is making some world-class wines in Oregon.

Constant Crush Wines

December 7, 2023

Today we share one of the electric new wineries of Oregon. The brainchild of Bree and Chad Stock Constant Crush Wine relies on their more than 30 years of industry experience. Constant Crush is a winery on the rise, and I can’t wait to see what is next from them having tried their incredible range of new wines.

It was almost a decade ago that I met Oregon wine board member Bree Stock, MW. Australian-born, her wine career began in the Canadian on-trade with Sommelier buying roles on both coasts. On return to Australia she developed broad industry experience in management and sales director roles in on-trade, distribution and importing specializing in wines of the Iberian Peninsular, US and Australia. Stock is a joy to talk wine with. Funny, witty and possessing an incredible palate, I quite honestly had no idea that she was making wine until I tried her Artist Block wines. This was the first time that I tasted any of her wines and I was quite frankly floored by what was in the bottle. I am so eager to see where her winemaking career takes her. The new wines I tasted were beautiful across the board. Anyone who knows me understands that I am not a big fan of the Pet Nats available on the Northwest wine scene — with very few exceptions. Her 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Mencia Pet Nat (OB, 92) rivals anything that you will taste like this in the Pacific Northwest with its incredible flavor range and nuances. These wines all have a wonderful singularity and a beginning, middle and end — with a focus on texture and varietal typicity. Bravo! Learn more about this fantastic new outpost at https://www.constantcrushwine.com/

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Mencia Pet Nat- This is a first for me to see the noble grape of Bierzo, Mencia, grown in the Willamette Valley. This comes off extremely well-balanced, with plenty of nuance. Blood orange zest and cranberry flavors combine with salty soils, Pazzaz apple and guava juice accents on the palate. Refined and seriously delicious, this is not your typical Oregon Pet Nat and is one to buy by the case. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Sauvignon Blanc- This 2022 Sauvignon Blanc saw some barrel age, coming from the Eola Springs Vineyard. Clowdy in the glass, this is filled with tension and sourdough bread notes on the palate, with salted macadamia nut and shades of Yakima cherry all coming together nicely. This is viscous and rich wine that is already nicely evolved. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Arneis- This unique bottling offers both excellent texture and finesse once on the mouth. Layers of honeysuckle and cardamom drenched pear combine with honeydew melon and stony accents on the palate. Delicious now, this will show well for another six plus years to come. Drink 2023-2029- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Chenin Blanc- Smooth, silky and very elegant, the 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Chenin Blanc is another seriously good new release from this new Oregon house. Once on the nose this takes on beeswax notes alongside cardamom and shades of cashew nut. The palate is rich and viscous with a dense mouthfeel. This is going to just get better with age, developing more nutty and earthy tones as it cellars. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gruner Veltliner- The fantastic 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gruner Veltliner might have just a dusting of Nikolaihof in her.  Once on the nose this takes on green bell pepper and dried sage notes alongside ripe orchard fruits, with baking spice accents. The palate is plush and soft with an inviting texture and good sense of weight and length. Fabulous to consume now, this will continue to evolve well for another eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Limited Addition’ combines Blaufrankish (80%) with smaller parts St. Laurent and Gruner Veltliner. The color is very concentrated, as is the deep fruit flavors on the palate. Violets, allspice dusted blackberries and shades of orange rind all collect momentum on the palate. This is seriously good, showing great flavor density, as this highly novel wine will cellar well over the next eight years to come. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Red Wine- This 2021 bottling combines Trousseau, Gamay and Pinot Noir in near equal parts. It is marvelously earthy with a smooth texture. Underbrush and black truffle crudo combine with kumquat zest, pretty red fruits and shades of cigar ash on the palate. This is gonna be loved by Oregon wine geeks. Drink 2023-2031- 91

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gamay- This 2021 Gamay comes off very fresh and nicely textured with delicate red fruits that parade with Mandarin orange rind, and flinty/salty undercurrents on the palate. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gamay- Just as fresh and vibrant as the 2021 Gamay, this 2022 offers plenty of mouth-watering acidity and finesse with very pretty and tart red fruit flavors that mingle well with orange zest, and wet stone accents. Enjoy now. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition Pinot Gris/Pinot Noir’ Red Wine- Equal parts Gris and Noir, this highly unusual yet sensual 2022 bottling offers lovely high-tones from the Gris with citrus blossom water, and guava fruit flavors that combine with suggestions of volcanic earth on the palate. Stony and savory, with plenty of lip-smacking acidity, this is a total winner. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Cabernet Franc- One of the best Cabernet Franc bottlings I have had from Oregon, this beautiful 2021 opens with violets, sage and wild blackberry notes on the nose. The palate is fresh and nicely balanced with a smooth texture. Rich and polished, with plenty of mouth-watering acidity, this will continue to evolve over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Cabernet Franc/Field Blend Red Wine- Soft and approachable once on the mouth, this 2022 offers a smooth texture and is loaded with bright black and red fruit flavors, with tobacco leaf and stony accents. Drink 2023-2031- 91

Here are the stunning 2021 wines by Lingua Franca.

Lingua Franca

December 7, 2023

It is my deepest pleasure to share one of the giants of Oregon. Lingua Franca was founded by Larry Stone and David Honig. Earlier this year the winery was sold to Constellation Brands and this will be an exciting development for the future. One of the Pacific Northwest’s finest winemaking talents, Thomas Savre makes wines that are extremely age worthy and well-structured, with beautiful richness and finesse. It has been a pleasure to see how his winemaking has developed over the years.

His wines from 2020 were outstanding despite the obvious challenges at harvest. The 2021 wines are arguably the finest that he has made so far. Do not miss out on the outstanding 2021 Lingua Franca ‘Sisters’ Chardonnay (OB, 95) which is filled with tension and richness. I adored the stunning 2021 Lingua Franca ‘Inspiras’ Chardonnay (OB, 97) which is one of the greatest Oregon Chardonnays that I have tasted over the past year. This beauty has so much potential. Learn more about Lingua Franca at https://www.linguafranca.wine Here are the beautiful new releases by Lingua Franca.

2021 Lingua Franca ‘Chers Amis’ Chardonnay- The 2021 ‘Chers Amis’ comes from a neighboring vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. It is dense, rich and tension-filled wine with pie crust and rich orchard fruit flavors alongside shades of cardamom dusted starfruit on the palate. Salty and savory, this is drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2021 Lingua Franca ‘Sisters’ Chardonnay- The outstanding 2021 Lingua Franca ‘Sisters’ Chardonnay is named after Larry Stone’s mother and her sister, who both grew up on a farm in Romania together. Once on the mouth this takes on an unctuous mouthfeel with serious texture. The flavor range imparted is really outstanding from walnut and suggestions of lime zest to Bartlett pear and stony as well as salty accents. Only 230 cases made of this totally stunning and viscous new Chardonnay. Enjoy now and over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2021 Lingua Franca ‘Inspiras’ Chardonnay- One of the outstanding wines from the Willamette Valley that I have tasted in the past year, the 2021 ‘Inspiras’ is a barrel select wine that comes from the Eola-Amity Hills. Thomas Savre has crafted a total stunner, as this really needs about an hour of air before consuming. Once aroused this takes on downright sexy layers of cardamom and allspice-laced pastry crust notes on the nose alongside ripe banana and Japanese pear, with flinty accents. The palate is plush and seamless as this effortlessly glides throughout the drinking experience. Tasted twice with similar notes, this is a stunning, world-class Chardonnay bottling that is both tension-filled and hedonistic from this warm vintage. Enjoy now and over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2023-2038- 97

2021 Lingua Franca ‘Petit Géant’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Petit Géant’ is a limited production Pinot Noir bottling (198 cases) that comes from Clone 943 Pinot Noir vines which are grown in stony soils. Very inky in the glass, this reveals beautiful opulence and concentration on the mouth, with an exceedingly long finish that just won’t quit. Layers of juicy wild blackberry and loganberry fruit flavors collide with wet stone and menthol accents on the palate. Rich and layered, this is a stunning warm vintage Pinot Noir that has some really great aging potential — but is also irresistible to enjoy now in its heady youth. Drink 2023-2037- 95

2021 Lingua Franca ‘Tongue ’N Cheek’ Pinot Noir- The beautiful and vibrant 2021 Lingua Franca ‘Tongue ’N Cheek’ Pinot Noir combines clonal selections 943 and 777. Citrus blossom water, guava and cranberry fruits combine with shades of salty soils and stony accents on the palate. Fresh and vibrant, with a smooth texture, this is a joy to consume right now. Drink 2023-2035- 94

Here is one of the exceptions new wines by Champagne Christophe Baron.

Champagne Christophe Baron

December 6, 2023

I love top Champagne. And it certainly has taken me many years to understand the nuance of Pinot Meunier in Champagne, as there are few top bottlings that utilize this varietal. In many years Krug can use roughly 33% Pinot Meunier in their ‘Grand Cuvee’ blend. Billecart-Salmon also makes a delicious 100% Pinot Meunier. Definitely one of the top Pinot Meunier champagnes that you all find in the world, the magnum only and mailing list-only Champagne Christophe Baron are all zero dosage bottlings that showcase 100% Pinot Meunier. The wines from this house seem to just get better and better.

Christophe Baron was born into an exceedingly long line of Champagne vignerons, with a history that dates back as far as 1677. He trained in Avize (Champagne) and Beaune before moving to the United States and founding one of North America’s iconic brands, Cayuse Vineyards. Baron’s estate in champagne includes 3 hectares (7.5 acres) surrounding the villages of Charly-sur-Marne, Crouttes-sur-Marne and the hamlet of Porteron, and its vineyard holdings are made up of only very old parcels of Pinot Meunier.

The wines are powerful and intense. They have serious viscosity and show better in a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc glass, or a Riedel tasting glass. They also need a lot of time when opened and I recommend letting them sit for least 30 minutes prior to consuming. Finally, make sure to not serve these wines cold. They are best served at 42-45 degrees — or warmer! I personally think these wines really hit their sweet spot when they are quite on the warm side, where you can full evoke the full range of flavors and aromatics.

Like 2018, 2019 was another warm vintage in Champagne. Both vintages seem to evoke a more powerful, fleshy profile than the 2017s. Just as I was blown away with the 2018 CCB wines, I can assure you that the 2019s are just as good. They are generous and heady wines that are going to need a lot of air after opening. Here are my reviews of the drop-dead gorgeous 2019 champagnes by Champagne Christophe Baron (mailing list only) and learn more at https://champagnechristophebaron.com/

2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Hauts Blanches Vignes’ Champagne- A masterful Champagne made in a warm vintage, the 2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Hauts Blanches Vignes’ comes from vines planted back in 1969. This site is extremely steep on a 19 degree slope and sits at roughly 400 feet above sea level on a southwestern exposure. Bright and intense aromatics of guava and pastry crust greet you alongside suggestions of ripe melon fruits. The palate shows a soft mousse and a silky texture with plenty of stony minerality and tension. Showing excellent length, this bottling really needs another year of bottle age — but you can see the incredible potential. Drink 2025-2039- 96

2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Le Dessus Du Bois Marie’ Champagne- Showing its vibrant pink hue in the glass, entirely comprised from Pinot Meunier grapes, the 2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Le Dessus Du Bois Marie’ Champagne is a stunning bottling from this warm vintage. Once on the nose this exudes class with its salty tones alongside bright pear and ginger with bright red fruits. The palate is plush and soft with refined structure and a big sense of weight and mouthfeel. Loads of mouth-watering acidity greets you, with stony and salty accents on the palate. Finishing very long, this is super nuanced, and tension-filled bold Pinot Meunier Champagne. The feeling of weight and finesse makes this display some serious aging potential. Try to resist this beauty for another year or two. Drink 2024-2039- 97

2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Champagne- The brilliant 2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ has the same level of depth and concentration as the scintillating 2018 and a displays a hare more than the ’17. It is already a joy to drink in terms of weight, salty presence and wet stone character. Once on the mouth you are greeted to a juicy core of salted melon and citrus fruits with nutty accents. With more air this really comes into it own, reveling in its saline-drenched character. This beauty really needs a decant if savoring in its heady youth. Drink 2025-2039- 97

2019 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Closeaux’ Champagne- Now in its second edition, the Les Closeaux was sourced from a very small, 1.49 acre site in the town of Crouttes-sur-Marne. Amazingly vines for this wine were planted in the mid-1920s. A wine with serious personality, the aromas of quince and ripe nectarine come to mind alongside salted cashew nut and shades of marzipan. The palate is plush and soft with a refined mousse and glorious length with sous bois and flinty accents. As with the other new CCB bottlings from 2019, this really needs another year in the bottle. Drink 2024-2039- 96

Great photo here of Tony and Michelle Soter.

Soter Vineyards

December 5, 2023

For years I have admired the wines of Soter, founded by Tony and Michelle Soter. A magnificent property, the Soter 'Mineral Springs Ranch’ spans 240-acres and is a certified biodynamic site that  was planted to 15 acres of Pinot Noir in 2002 and 2003, and an additional 15 acres in 2006. Two acres of Chardonnay were included in the 2006 plantings and are devoted entirely to our sparkling wine production. Small extension blocks have been added over the years to grow total production to 40 acres.

One of the outstanding winemakers in Oregon, Chris Fladwood has a storied career in wine which included harvests in New Zealand as well as Bordeaux. He became cellar master in 2009 and has worked his way to the winemaker position. He has crafted some beautiful wines at many different price points. As a psychologist who works with veterans for mental health evaluations I am so impressed with Flatwood’s pivot to going all-in on wine and becoming nothing short of a world-class winemaker.

For any years Soter has gained national attention for their sparkling wines, as you will find them at NYC and SF Michelin Star restaurants. The sparkling wines are highly geeky and nuanced. They are wines that pair so well with sushi and very nuanced food. Don’t miss out on the 2019 Soter ‘Mineral Springs’ Rose Sparkling Wine (OB, 94) which shows vibrant red fruits that parade with salty undercurrents.  I am really impressed by the 2021 Soter ‘Mineral Springs Ranch’ Pinot Noir (OB, 94) which is already drinking beautifully with its earthy and salty tones.  Learn more about this famed Oregon producer at http://sotervineyards.com/ Here are the beautiful new wines by Soter Vineyards.

2019 Soter ‘Mineral Springs Vineyard’ Rose Sparkling Wine- The fabulous ‘Minerals Springs’ Brut Rose was disgorged in May 2023 and was given 4G/L dosarge. This spent three and a half years en tirage, as the wine is a blend of mostly Pinot Noir (81%) with the remainder Chardonnay. A gorgeous salmon hue, this offers plenty of stuffing with a refined mousse and loads of salted citrus fruit flavors alongside guava puree and bright red raspberry. Finishing long with copious minerals, this beautiful wine has a long life ahead of it. Drink 2023-2035- 94

2016 Soter ‘Minerals Springs Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine- The 2016 Soter ‘Minerals Springs Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine comes from this warm vintage and spent a whopping eight six years en tirage. Showing plenty of nerve and a soft mousse, this offers nutmeg drenched French bread, marzipan, salted macadamia nut and suggestions of honeydew melon on the nose. The wine shows a very soft effervescence with solid weight and a lengthy finish. This is really good stuff to savor right now. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2022 Planet Oregon Pinot Noir- The 2022 Planet Oregon Pinot Noir comes off very soft and approachable with layers of pretty red fruits that collide with freshly tilled soils and shades of orange peel. Fresh and lithe with a polished texture, this is drinking beautifully in its bright youth. Drink 2023-2029- 91

2021 Soter ‘Mineral Springs Ranch’ Pinot Noir- This captivating 2021 Pinot Noir comes from the 240 acre ‘Mineral Springs Ranch’ which is biodynamically farmed and set on marine sedimentary soils in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Stored for 12 months in French oak (40% new) and then a further eight months in the bottle, this is loaded with juicy cranberry and wild blackberry fruit flavors, with a very enticing texture and great sense of weight from this warm vintage. Wafts of salted black truffle and allspice add to the enjoyment as this beauty is drinking marvelously in its heady youth. Drink 2023-2033- 94

Here is the stunning new sparkling wine by ROCO.

ROCO

December 4, 2023

Today we share one of the great sparkling wine producers in North America. Oregon’s sparkling wine master, Rollin Soles, transformed the wine program at Argyle, putting them on the national stage before starting his own winery, ROCO. Rollin comes off as extremely kind-hearted and has a wonderful sense of humor. I’ve been fortunate to have tasted his Argyle wines back to the late 1990s, as the ‘Extended Tirage’ wines that he made were some of the finest bubbles you will find in North America.

With the 2013 vintage Rollin was able to craft his first sparkling wine for his label, the ‘RMS.’ As a wine critic I was unabashedly licking my chops when I found out that Rollin was going to make aged sparkling wine. RMS wines are aged for 2.5 years before being disgorged. Rollin has had great success with his ROCO wines as he and his wife sold their winery to Santa Margarita winery earlier in 2022. There is very good reason why these giants of Italy took interest in this winery that has been consistently producing great wines. They have now completed their ‘Delayed Disgorgement bottling which comes from the 2013 vintage. This spent a whopping 10 years en tirage.

2013 ‘Delayed Disgorgemnt’ (OB, 97) is a total masterpiece with amazing nutty and earthy tones right now. Don’t miss out on the new release, the 2020 ‘RMS’ (OB, 95) which is dense and has a dazzling mouthfeel with loads of tension. Learn more about these incredible wines at rocowinery.com and here are my notes from the new release wines by ROCO.

2013 ROCO ’Delayed Disgorgement’ Sparkling Wine- This beautiful sparkling wine was stored on the lees for 10 years prior to disgorgement. A blend of 67% Pinot Nour with the remainder Chardonnay, this shows up fat and unctuous on the mouth, reminding people that 2013 was a flat out fabulous growing season prior to torrential rains at harvest. This beauty was obviously picked before the rains. Golden raisin, Japanese pear and toasted hazelnut flavors combine with shades of banana and even Yakima cherry on the palate. Novel, complex and delicious, with serious richness and underlying finesse, this is quite simply a masterclass by Oregon bubbles master Rollin Soles. No reason to cellar this fully mature heavyhitter of a wine. Drink 2023-2031- 97

2020 ROCO ‘RMS’ Sparkling Wine- The 2020 ‘RMS’ leaves little doubt that it is one of the great Willamette Valley wines made in 2020. Fully clean and chalk-filled with tension, salty undercurrents and a dense mouthfeel, this is absolutely cranking even at the three year mark. This beauty has so much to give in its rich core of honeydew melon, salted Marcona almond, bright Bartlett pear and even cardamom-laced starfruit notes. Rollin Soles continues to shine here as this is best savored now and over the next ten plus years to come. Mostly Chardonnay with small parts Pinot Noir. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2020 ROCO ‘RMS’ Rose Sparkling Wine- Made from mostly Pinot Noir grapes, this absolutely dazzling 2020 Rose Sparkling Wine takes the cake as one of the Willamette Valley greats mad this year. Once on the nose this shows off pretty pastry crust aromatics that combine with red raspberry and shades of salmonberry. But the palate is every bit but tart with its refined texture and showing a gorgeous bright red fruit profile. The dosage is right on point as the refined mousse really entices the spirit. With more air this mineral-laden, wild mushroom and sea spray accented and heady sparkling rose sparkling wine is quite simply a joy to consume now. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2021 ROCO ‘Chehalem Crossing’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 Chehalem Crossing Pinot Noir comes off very plump and ripe on the mouth, yet shows a great mineral backbone. Flavors of black plum and red cherry with pomegranate seed all beautifully meld together on the palate, with orange rind accents. This is drinking really well right now and will continue to evolve for at least another ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2035- 93

2021 ROCO ‘Matteri Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- This wine comes from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, as this site was first planted in an exceedingly tough vintage (2011). Fortunately for the consumer, this tastes nothing like 2011 Oregon Pinot Noir. This is dense and powerful with bright underlying tension and a deep amalgamation of fresh red and dark fruit flavors. With more air shades of black truffle, pine needles and salty undertones emerge on the palate. Finishing very long, this is a total masterclass by ROCO. Drink 2023-2037- 94

Great photo of Vital Wines founder Ashley Trout.

Vital Wines

November 17, 2023

Today it brings me great pleasure to present one of the most philanthropic wine brands of the United States. Started by the talented Ashley Trout, Vital Winery partners with a host of other wine industry entities, from coopers to other wineries, and a portion of the Vital Wines profits go to the SOS Clinic, a free, non-profit health care clinic in the Walla Walla area dedicated to helping all people receive free healthcare. I can’t think of any other Pacific Northwest winery that focuses on giving to this level. This is not only a visionary project but the new wines are seriously good. Ashley Trout got her start in the Washington wine industry at age 18. A fellow Whitman graduate, I had the chance to interview her and she has formerly been named by Wine Enthusiast as one of ‘the top 40 under 40 tastemakers.’

I love the new 2022 Vital  X The Walls Chardonnay (OB, 92) which is beautifully textured and shows great weight and poise. Learn more about this great new project winery at https://www.vitalwinery.com Here are the beautiful new wines by Vital Wines.

2022 Vital Wines X The Walls Chardonnay- This 2022 Chardonnay was made at The Walls. Coming from the acclaimed French Creek Vineyard, this offers plenty of weight with a refined texture. Here is the great lineup by Beronia.

Bodega Beronia

November 17, 2023

Flashback to the early 2000s and I was enjoying a lot of Rioja wines. They were wines that totally over-delivered for the price and I admired tasting the wines of Beronia — particularly their Gran Reserva wines that came from the mid to late 1990s. Bodega Beronia has always been relatively easy to find in the United States and the continue that trend today as many of these wines can be found in Pacific Northwest wine shops and grocery stores. Bodega Beronia is surrounded by 25 hectares of estate vineyards and their team control a massive 870 hectares of vineyards situated within a 10km radius of the winery in the Rioja Alta region of La Rioja. The average age of these vineyards is 30 years and more than 50 hectares of their plantings exceed 60 years of age.

Beronia winemaker Matias Calleja, has been at the winery for nearly 40 years. He has left a massive imprint on all of Rioja and I love his new range wines which all show really good value. I love the new 2019 Bodega Beronia ‘Crianza’ Rioja (OB, 90) which shows great poise and concentration. A killer new wine is the 2015 Bodega Beronia ‘Gran Reserva’ Rioja (OB, 93) which is very rich with some serious aging potential. Learn more about this special estate at http://www.beronia.com Here are the great new wines by Bodega Beronia.

2020 Bodega Beronia ‘Tempranillo Elaboration Especial’ Rioja- The 2020 Bodega Beronia ‘Tempranillo Elaboration Especial’ Rioja offers rich boysenberry and black currant fruit flavors alongside a smooth mouthfeel. Drink 2023-2029- 91

2017 Bodega Beronia Graciano- The 2017 Graciano shows pretty red rose petals on the nose alongside wild blackberry, thyme and tiled soil notes. The palate is soft and refined with good concentration. Drink 2023-2030- 91

2019 Bodega Beronia ‘Crianza’ Rioja- The really good 2019 Bodega Beronia ‘Crianza’ Rioja offers red plum and juicy red raspberry with blood orange zest notes on the nose. The palate is fresh and fleshy with a smooth texture. Drink this great value now and over the next five to seven years. Drink 2023-2029- 90

2018 Bodega Beronia ‘Reserva’ Rioja- The shockingly good 2018 Bodega Beronia ‘Reserva’ Riojais a beautiful wine in a warm vintage. Sweet pipe tobacco with coffee grounds, red currants and citrus rind notes all mark the palate. Drink 2023-2032- 92

Here is the outstanding 2018 Cabernet by Hoopes.

Hoopes

November 17, 2023

A Napa family wine story, Lindsay Hoopes was raised on a farm by her wine-loving family. Over time she learned how to cultivate grapes and promote Napa’s sense of place through her father, Spencer Hoopes. Spencer Hoopes loved farming, and developed a passion for wine as the wine industry in Napa boomed around him.

Today Lindsay heads operations at Hoopes and the wines are made by Napa wine icon Aaron Pott. I recently visited Pott at his high elevation vineyard in Napa. He makes some world-class wines for his own label. The new Hoopes wines I tasted were seriously good across the board. Poised and balance, these are not fruit bombs but wines with plenty of depth and flavor density but also show great structure. The best wine I tasted was the incredible 2018 Hoopes ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 95) which is fresh, viscous and has some serious aging potential. Learn more about these outstanding wines at https://www.hoopesvineyard.com and here are the beautiful new releases by Hoopes.

2021 Hoopes ‘Napa Valley’ Rose- This mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) based 2021 Rose was stored in a combination of natural oak and stainless steel. This is generous, round and soft Rose, showing teaberry and cran-orange flavors alongside its smooth texture. Enjoy now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2018 Hoopes ‘Napa Valley’ Syrah- Coming from the Oak Knoll District, this 2018 Syrah offers sweet pipe tobacco, kirsch, Asian spices and suggestions of creme de violette. The palate nicely balanced, with good concentration and underlying finesse. Black currants, mocha, anise and shades of hoisin sauce all dominate the palate. Rich and viscous, this is gorgeous wine that is drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2038- 94

2018 Hoopes ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2018 ‘Oakville’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning new bottling by Hoopes. Stored in French oak for 29 months before bottling, this offers ripe cassis notes with roasted figs on the nose alongside forest floor notes on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture. Layers of mocha, tar and black licorice combines with shades of sage on the palate. This will live on for at least another fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038- 95

Here is the gorgeous new ‘Prima’ (OB, 94) by Lachini Vineyards.

Lachini

November 15, 2023

Tonight it is my great pleasure to share one of Oregon’s greats that was founded more than 20 years ago. It was 2001 when Ron and Marianne Lachini decided to take the plunge and locate in the Chehalem Mountains AVA to showcase wines from this special, terroir-driven location. Lachini produces a wide range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that show wonderful terroir and poise. Ron Lachini is one of the great personalities in Oregon wine. A down to earth guy, he is passionate about producing great Pinot Noir from his vineyard. Lachini has tasting rooms in both Oregon and Woodinville. The wines that they have made from Washington are also seriously good.

Florent Merlier became head winemaker in April 2022. I am really excited to see his hand in the wines. An outstanding value Pinot Noir, the 2021 Lachini ‘Cuvee Giselle’ Pinot Noir (OB, 93) is a total stunner. Fresh and viscous with serious verve, this is already beautifully evolved. I love the new 2019 Lachini Vineyards ‘Prima’ Pinot Noir (OB, 94) which is a stunning wine made in a cooler vintage.  Learn more about this great Oregon winery at https://www.lachinivineyards.com Here are the great new release wines by Lachini Vineyards.

2021 Lachini ‘Cuvee Giselle’ Pinot Noir- The great new 2021 ‘Cuvee Giselle’ comes from the Chehalem Mountain AVA. Right away this is very appealing with its soft mouthfeel Bright underling acidity lines this beauty that shows a wonderful purity of red fruits with menthol and sage accents, alongside salty soil tones. This is refined and elegant, nicely weighted and structured Oregon Pinot Noir that will drink well for another fifteen years to coms. Drink 2023-2037- 93

2021 Lachini ‘Estate’ Pinot Noir-  A total wow-factor wine, the 2021 ’Family Estate’ Pinot Noir is another beautiful wine made by Ron Lachini. This wine utilizes a range of clonal selection Pinot Noir including Pommard, Wädenswil, Dijon 113, 114, 115, 667, 777 and a 'suitcase clone' (L.T.) This is big and broad-shouldered, taking on a very Sonomaesque sense of weight. Cran-pomegranate, gauva and red cherry flavors combine with freshly tilled salty soils and orange rind accents. Complex, hedonistic and very delicious, enjoy this polished wine now and over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2023-2038- 94

2022 Lachini  ‘La Cruz Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- This beautiful new 2022 Pinot Nor comes from the ‘La Cruz Vineyard’ which neighbors the Pacific Ocean in the Sonoma Coast AVA. Lachini has now been sourcing from this site for many years, as this saw a small portion of whole cluster fermentation. The resultant wine is jam-packed full of flavor, with good underlying tension. Pretty red fruits collide with tobacco leaf, refined tannins and shades of white pepper all line the palate. Finishing long this might be the finest edition of this wine made yet. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2019 Lachini ‘Prima’ Pinot Noir- The 2019 ‘Prima’ is a stunning wine made from a slightly cooler vintage. The wine utilizes Dijon clone 115, Dijon clone 116, Pommard clone and Waidenswil clonal selections, as the 2019 shows serious weight despite the challenges at harvest. Neatly concentrated with bright Yakima cherry and red raspberry cordial notes alongside wet rock and sous bois notes, this is drinking beautifully now. Drink 2023-2038- 94

2021 Lachini ‘La Bestia’ Cabernet Sauvignon- Made from vines sourced from the Quintessence and Boushey Vineyards, this was stored for 22 months in French oak before bottling. The palate is soft and seamless with serious texture and tension. Dark currants parade with mocha, allspice dusted blackberry, and espresso grounds on the palate. Totally stunning and already beautifully evolved, this will be a 20 year wine. But why wait? Drink 2023-2040- 94

Don’t miss out on the new wines by Audeant.

Audeant

November 15, 2023

Today we share one of the great newer wineries in Oregon. Audeant was founded by Andrew Reichers who was the first employee at Sanguis under epic winemaker Matthias Pippig. Over time Reichers applied his trade spending time learning winemaking in New Zealand, at Burn Cottage, and in Burgundy in the Haute Cote working for Claire Naudin at Domaine Naudin Ferrand. More recently Andrew has served for five years as the assistant winemaker at Antica Terra and Lillian with Maggie Harrison prior to joining and founding Audeant Wines with Proprietor, Teal Walker, in 2016. Reichers has a world-class wine resume and is even making some incredible bubbles for his Missoula Flood project with Pippig.

Reichers did a great job navigating the somewhat tricky 2019 vintage — one that saw very difficult harvest conditions. The wines from 2021 were incredible across the board. I adored the

2021 Audeant ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir (OB, 92) which is killer for the price. Even better is the scintillating 2021 Audeant ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir (OB, 94) showing really nice flavor density from this warm vintage. Learn more about this exciting winery at https://www.audeant.com Here are the beautiful new wine releases by Audeant.

Finishing very long with vanilla cream and copious minerals, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2035- 94

2021 Audeant ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir- The outstanding 2021 Audeant ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir is very serious at the entry level. The nose unveils stony and savory notes with flint, damp earth and bright pomegranate seed flavors. Soft and elegant on the mouth, this shows great flavor range from menthol and wild blackberry flavors to tilled soils and suggestions of baking spices, with plenty of underlying minerality. This is spectacularly good for the price. Drink 2023-2035- 93

2021 Audeant ‘Foothills’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Foothills’ Pinot Noir is a barrel selection wine made from the Luminous Hills and Cherry Grove Vineyards. Deeply perfumed on the nose, this takes on some fantastic aromatic range. Teaberry and allspice combine with tart cranberry and red rose petal notes on the nose. The palate is beautifully textured with a seamless mouthfeel. Jam-packed with texture, bright acidity and pure red and dark fruit flavors, this is a delicious, refined Pinot Noir that is already drinking beautifully. Stony and salty accents line this fantastic bottling that will live on for another fifteen plus years. Drink 2023-2038- 95

2021 Audeant ‘Nysa Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The outstanding ‘Nysa Vineyard’ by Audeant comes from this volcanic soil-laden site planted at 650 feet.  This is wonderfully stony on the nose, yelling beautiful kumquat and pure red fruits alongside cardamom accents. The palate shows broad shoulders and good richness from the warmth of the vintage. A great melange of red and dark fruits greet you alongside beef blood, orange peel and copious minerals. Finihsing long with bright red fruits, enjoy this beauty now and over the next twelve plus years.

Tart red fruits collide with tilled salty soils and plenty of underlying tension on the palate. Soft and inviting this is already beautifully evolved stuff. Drink 2023-2033- 94

Here are the beautiful new sparkling wines by Cho Wines.

Cho Wines

November 15, 2023

I love the inspired stories of the Oregon wine community. Today we share the journey of Lois and Dave Cho who founded Cho Wines several years back. Dave Cho who is Cho Wines founder/winemaker was introduced to the world of winemaking while performing music at local wineries in southern California and grew his passion for the trade while meditating with monks in Burgundy and sipping through California and beyond. Cho moved his family from California to Oregon to pursue a career in the wine industry and has a degree in Enology & Viticulture from Oregon State University. While in Oregon Cho trained at Argyle Winery as well as Stoller Family Estate. In 2020 he finally made his own label of wines. He is the first Korean-American winemaker in Oregon.

This is the second year that I have tasted his wines. Both the Pet-Nats he made were well-intentioned and delicious.
