Here are the beautiful new 2021 red wines by Devison.

Devison

December 11, 2023

Ever since I first met him at EFESTE, I knew that Peter Devison was a special talent. Openly obsessive about making fine wine, Peter has tried the great wines of the world many times over. This helps him craft some of the finest you will taste in Washington state.

Having a great history in the Washington wine industry, having been head winemaker at EFESTE prior to moving to Walla Walla and eventually starting his own brand with his wife, Kelsey. They are great people to spend time with. Peter is also making wines for Goose Ridge.

Like last years releases, the wines I tasted from 2021 were absolutely outstanding. I tasted only his red wines but his whites have always been truly amazing. I absolutely love the 2021 Devison ‘Phantom Lamb’ Syrah (OB, 95) which is hedonistic and intense — definitely not for the weary. Learn more about these beautiful wines at DevisonVintners.com and here are the new wines by Devison.

2021 Devison ‘Above the Flood’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Above the Flood’ is mostly Grenache (65%) with smaller parts Syrah and a dash of Mourvèdre that all come from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. The aromatics are truly outstanding with Linzer torte and white peppercorns that combine with salty soils, dried herbs and shades of wild blackberry. The palate is soft and seamless with an incredible sense of weight and texture. Finishing very long this is already beautifully evolved stuff that will live on for at least another ten years. Drink 2023-2035— 94

2021 Devison ‘Phantom Lamb ‘ Syrah- This awesome and deeply perfumed 100% Syrah comes from the Scarline Vineyard.  Aged in natural oak barrels, this revels in its dark florals and smoky aromas alongside shades of Korean BBQ beef ribs and dense dark fruits. The palate is plush and seamless, coming off very soft on the mouth. Layers of rich boysenberry and huckleberry fruits combine with espresso grounds, dark chocolate shavings and shades of pink peppercorns. This is a total stunner even at the two year mark. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2021 Devison Malbec- This deep and opulent 2021 Malbec comes from the Southward Vineyard. Massive huckleberry and creme de violette flavors combine with the seamless mouthfeel and bright sense of underlying verve on the palate. Very welcoming and inviting now, this beautiful wine is going to cellar well for at least another decade to come. Drink 2023-2037- 95

2021 Devison Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2021 Devison Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from Block 3 of the Goose Mountain Vineyard. This is also very inky in the glass, reveling in its heady tar, black licorice and black currant flavors alongside creme de violette on the palate. Concentrated and powerful, this is drinking marvelously right now and will show well over the next fifteen plus years to come. Drink 2023-2038- 95
