Sojourn Cellars makes some incredible, cellar-worthy Pinots and Chards.

Sojourn Cellars Vertical Tasting

May 4, 2026

Last Saturday I descended upon Sojourn Cellars in downtown Sonoma. It had been several years since I made my visit to taste some of the outstanding Pinots and Chards from this region. Sojourn Celalrs is under new ownership and we talked about the approach to wines.

The wines have been remarkably consistent and they show terrific aging potential. The winery dates back to 2001 when two tennis friends–Craig Haserot and Erich Bradley–who shared a passion for two things: great wine and tennis. With Erich’s experience as an Assistant Winemaker at Arrowood Winery, the two developed a plan to produce small bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon from outstanding vineyard sources. They began with a hundred cases of Cabernet Sauvignon that they sold to friends and family. Today they produce more than different wines and have customers worldwide.

It was fun to see how these age and I was enamored by the 2021 ‘Sangiacomo’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95) which is rich and viscous with plenty of salty minerality. Whitman Hill

May 4, 2026

Today we share a newer producer from the Yakima Valley. Their first wines for that project were made humbly in their garage. In 2020 the had the chance to acquire property in Zillah, which became Whitman Hill.

For years Corison has implemented a trademark more Bordelaise, and restrained style to her Napa wines. The wines have precision, power and restraint. They age so gracefully.

I am so impressed with what she achieved in 2022. Her 2023 wines are even better. I adored the 2023 Corison ’St. Helena’ Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 97) which is vibrant and nervy with serious power and poise.  Learn more about these elegant Napa wines at https://corison.com/ Here is my review of her new Corison wines.

2023 Corison ‘St. Helena’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2023 ‘St. Helena’ comes from several undisclosed sites in this district. A total stunner, with a light dusting of salinity, and some serious finesse, enjoy over the next twenty years to come. Drink 2026-2046- 97

2023 Corison ‘Rutherford’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2023 ‘Rutherford’ is a one-time wine from a single location in the Rutherford AVA that has since been replanted. Finishing long with black fruits and copious stony minerals, enjoy now and over the next twenty plus years. Try to give this another year in the bottle. Drink 2027-2047- 97

Great new releases by winemaker Chase Renton and his L’Angolo Estate wines.

L'Angolo Estate

April 29, 2026

It is my pleasure to write about the wines of L’Angolo Estate which is a stalwart producer located in the Dundee Hills. L’Angolo Estate was founded by proprietors Holdings and Lou Renton, who purchased a 20 acre property in the Dundee Hills several years back. The estate vineyard is planted to 6 acres of Pinot Noir and 4 acres of Chardonnay, which were planted in two successive years. Vines are set in a combination of Jory and Nekia soils, as the site has four clones of Pinot Noir and two clones of Chardonnay across 13 clone-specific vineyard blocks. The last two releases of wines from this site have appeared as nicely concentrated and loaded with red and black fruit flavors, with great flinty and stony undertones.

Winemaker Chase Renton has a background in wine sales and also studied at Apicius Wine Studies in 2011. He has led L’Angelo since 2012 and has formerly worked harvests in California and Burgundy before settling down in Oregon. The wines that he makes have a beginning, middle and end. I have really enjoyed the wines that he has made over the years. The new wines come with a lot of meaning as he has produced his new ‘Resilience’ Pinot Noir bottling which is inspired by his own mental health journey and donates proceeds to the Kevin Love Mental Health Fund.

Great photo of Oregon wine icon, Bill Stoller, who graciously spent time with me for an interview before his passing last year.

Chehalem and Stoller

April 29, 2026

Today we share the Rose wines of Chehalem and Stoller. I wanted to give my heartfelt remembrances to Oregon wine icon, Bill Stoller who I chatted with last year. The property spans 400 acres, with 225 acres focused on growing vines at elevations ranging from 220 to 640 feet. Ten varietals are planted in this vineyard, including Viognier, Pinot Meunier and even Aligote.

Here is the absolutely mesmerizing 27. iteration of ‘Grand Siecle’ by Laurent-Perrier.

Laurent-Perrier

April 22, 2026

Today it is my pleasure to share renowned champagne producer, Laurent-Perrier which was established in 1812. Located in the heart of Champagne, in Tours-sur-Marne, vines are set on limestone soil, highly chalky and showing the distinctiveness of the region. The chalk subsoil holds sufficient water, during dry spells and due its porous nature also provides good drainage when it is wet to prevent roots of becoming water logged, acting a bit like a sponge.

Laurent-Perrier produces a beautiful range of champagnes including one of the world’s most popular Rose champagnes. I adored the new NV Laurent-Perrier Brut Rose Champagne (OB, 93) which is so delicious to enjoy now. One with good aging potential is the 2015 Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne (OB, 94) which is dense and delicious stuff with serious weight from this slightly warmer vintage. Chef du cave Michel Fauconnet Laurent-Perrier in August 1973 doing work experience in the cellars after getting a certificate in agricultural engineering at the Agricultural College of Rethel (in the Ardennes region). He has served as Production Director and 'Chef de Cave', Laurent-Perrier’s Cellar Master, a position held since February 2004. A truly inspired story, he first began working for the company as a manual worker from 1974-76 before being promoted to the technical staff in 1980. A year later, he received the accolade of 'Chef de Cercle' and was responsible for Laurent-Perrier’s winery and the fermentation process of all of Laurent-Perrier’s wines. A total masterclass, the Laurent-Perrier ‘Grand Siecle Iteration No. 27’ Champagne (OB, 99) is the finest edition of this wine that I have tasted. It comes mainly from the warmer 2015 vintage and has a seamless quality that you see in the No. 26 iteration. Although this edition is even more dense and less tightly wound. You are going to be amazed by this wine! Learn more about this historic Champagne house at http://www.laurent-perrier.com/en/the-wines/

NV Laurent-Perrier ‘Heritage’ Brut Champagne- The NV Laurent-Perrier ‘Heritage’ Brut Champagne comes from the 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2014 vintages and is slightly more Chardonnay (55%) with the remainder Pinot Noir. It is marvelously dense with salted macadamia nut flavors that combine with green papaya, wet rock and shades of cantalope. The soft mousse really arouses the mid-palate, as the older wines from ten year old vintages round out with plenty of depth and power. Drink 2026-2035- 93

2015 Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne- Sourced from this wonderfully warm vintage, the 2015 ‘Brut’ Champagne is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that sat on the lees for seven years prior to disgorgement. This is loaded with flavor density and texture with starfruit, cloves and shortbread flavors alongside hints of mango. The combination of weight and length, as well as refined mousse, really makes this check all the boxes. Drink 2026-2038- 94

Laurent-Perrier ‘Grand Siecle Iteration No. 27’ Champagne- For my palate the finest ‘Grand Siecle’ in the collection, the ‘Iteration No. 27’ edition comes primarily from the warm 2015 vintage (65%) as well as 25% from the cool 2013 vintage and the remainder from 2012. 8 grand cru sites were blended in to this blend of 60% Chardonnay and the remainder Pinot Noir, as this sat on the lees for 10 years prior to disgorgement. Plump and ripe on the nose, this has a gorgeous push/pull in terms of weight and tension. Dense green melon notes collide with papaya, white peach and shades of toasted brioche on the palate. The silky mousse and refined mouthfeel really entice, as does the near minute-long finish. This really evolves beautifully after 30 minutes of air so try to be patient after opening. And be sure to not serve this unforgettable wine too cold! Drink 2026-2043- 99

Here is the sensational new lineup of 2024 Zins by Robert Biale.

Robert Biale

April 22, 2026

It is my pleasure to bring you one of California Zinfandel producers. The story of Robert Biale is an inspired history that utilizes some of the oldest Zinfandel sites in the area, producing wines with good ripeness but overall a focus on poise, flavor and aromatic range. These are wines that are well-structured and bring a great sense of place.

At the helm is David Natali. A New York native, David graduated from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and developed a passion for winemaking after bottling at a friend’s small winery. He formerly served as cellar hand at Clos Pegase Winery and later studied at the University of Montpellier in France, where he received his master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology. After two and a half years of living and studying abroad in Montpellier, France, and Udine, Italy, David returned to California. He became the Assistant Winemaker for La Rochelle Winery, later taking the Assistant Winemaker position at Robert Biale Vineyards.

David did an amazing job with the 2022 wines — one that was particularly difficult for Zin. His 2024s shone across the board.

Heck out the incredible 2024 ‘Morisoli Vineyard’ Zinfandel (OB, 96) which is elegant, sleep and loaded with flavor range. Learn more about this storied Napa property at http://biale.com Here are the great new wines by Robert Biale.
