Wine of the Week: 2011 Bodega Numanthia 'Termes'

October 19, 2014

One of my favorite Spanish wineries is Bodega Numanthia. This is an extremely high end wine producer that is owned by the LVMH, the brand that owns Louis Vuitton, Moet Champagne and other big brands. The wine is produced from a remote area in Spain called Toro. Wine has been produced in this region since the middle ages. The wine region is one of the driest in Spain and the region is known for major temperature fluctuations during summer.
The wine varietal planted in Toro is called Tinto de Toro, which is an offshoot of the Tempranillo varietal. The resultant wine often tastes somewhere between Cabernet and Tempranillo. . . like an earthy Cabernet. When done right, this varietal is out of this world delicious. The Termes is Numanthia’s entry level wine and is constructed from younger vines, less than 50 years old. Some of the high end wines produced from Numanthia, come from older vines, some even 100 years old. Termes is consistently one of the best values in Toro and costs around 25 bucks. The 2011 edition is rich and complex. You can find this wine at specialty wine shops and online. ‪#‎bodeganumanthia‬

2011 Bodega Numanthia ‘Termes’- Smoke and prune on the nose with oak. Palate is full bodied with black cherry, black tea, mocha and blackberry flavors. Complex and delicious, drink now. -92
