Figgins Estate

June 20, 2019

One of the prized boutique wineries in Washington, Figgins Estate marks the alignment between an esteemed vineyard site and one of the great winemaking talents in Washington, Chris Figgins. What was originally a wheat farm, the 32 acre vineyard was first planted in 2004 and plays host to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Originally Figgins Estate only made two wines each year, a Riesling and a Red Blend but have now added their ‘Figlia’ to the mix which is a stunning blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot that sees extensive barrel aging. If you have never had the chance to visit the Figgins Estate in the Blue Mountains the panoramic views that sweep across the Walla Walla Valley is sight to be seen. Set at 1750 feet this great vineyard experiences massive diurnal shifts. I have seen improvement in the quality of the wines since their red wine was first released in 2008. It is clear that the quality of the fruit coming off this beautiful vineyard is getting better and better.

One of the great Riesling wines in Washington, the 2018 Figgins Estate Riesling (WWB, 93) combines an incredible mouthfeel with bright minerality and a touch of sweetness. This is a wine for true lovers of Riesling near and far. Even better was their new wine, the 2016 Figgins Family ‘Figlia’ Red Wine (WWB, 96) which is Merlot and Petit Verdot at their best. It is hard to describe this wine because there is really nothing like it made in Washington. Simply put, this dazzling new release is seamless throughout the attack with dense fruit and non fruit flavors. Do not miss out on this stunning new bottling. Learn more about these beautiful wines at http://www.figginswine.com Here are the stunning new wines by Figgins Estate.

2018 Figgins Estate Riesling- The talented Chris Figgins continues to impress with this classy Washington Riesling that is one of the best of its kind in the state. Tiny bubbles dance in the glass as you take in the lemon zest, nectarine rind and Gravenstein apple aromatics that all combine brilliantly in the glass. The palate shows some racy acidity with just the faintest kiss of sweetness. Kumquat, lemon zest, kiwi and sour green apple flavors mingle together alongside the brilliant sense of minerality. Highly satisfying now, and showing a great combination of weight and verve, this outstanding new Riesling will evolve well over the next decade. Drink 2019-2029- 93

2016 Figgins Estate ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- The 2016 Figgins Estate ‘Figlia’ is the inaugural effort for this wine. Entirely sourced from the Figgins Estate Vineyard, the wine is a proprietary bend of Petit Verdot and Merlot which was aged for 23 months in French oak barrels prior to bottling. The ‘Figlia’ needs a one hour decant prior to consuming. Upon entry the nose is quite intense with toasty oak that connects with smoky undertones, chocolate covered cherry and tar tones that fill the nose. The palate is not only highly viscous but has a beautiful sense of balance. Green belll pepper, Black Forest cake, and sweet pipe tobacco flavors all collide on the palate. While marvelous in its youth, this outstanding new wine will cellar well for decades. Only 250 cases made of this stunning new wine. Drink 2020-2040- 96
