Chateau Ste. Michelle ‘Artist Series’

October 29, 2020

It was several years back and my friend Scott brought by a mysterious box of wine. ‘This might not still be good’ Scott contended. As I unwrapped this I saw on the label ‘1993’ and there were three bottles of the Chateau Ste. Michelle ‘Artist Series’ red wine. ‘Lets crack one and see’ I said. I was glad that I did, as the wine, although not stored properly, was seriously good. I have fond memories of that evening as we both were impressed with the aging potential of great Washington red wine. It reminds me that I need to revisit some of the older vintages of this wine, particularly the gorgeous 2012 ‘Artist Series’ that I’ve enjoyed on several occasions in the past few years.

It is hard to celebrate during this challenging period in our lives. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ‘Artist Series’ by Chateau Ste. Michelle. “The Artist Series is a very personal statement for me and what I enjoy most about Washington state red wines,” says Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaker Bob Bertheau. While the 2020 pandemic has brought more than challenges for many people, this edition is a magical wine made by Bertheau. The 2017 Chateau Ste. Michelle ‘Artist Series’ Red Wine (OB, 93) is a really harmonious blend of nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. 2017 Chateau Ste. Michelle ‘Artist Series’ Red Wine- The 2017 Chateau Ste. Michelle ‘Artist Series’ Red Wine is a fantastic blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot with small portions Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Dried herbs combine with shades of tobacco leaf, black currant jelly and mocha tones all impress on the nose. The palate is very elegant, showing off a silky mouthfeel and really good sense of balance. Layers of toasty oak wrap around the core of dark currants, blackberry pie and coffee ground flavors, with a dusting of cocoa powder and salty terroir. Fresh and energetic with really good length, this beautiful wine will cellar well for the next fifteen years — or more. Drink 2020-2035- 93
