One of the stalwart Napa wineries, I fondly recall tasting at Turnbull more than a decade ago in a really nice and relaxed tasting room environment. They have been in the valley for more than 35 years and focus their program on Cabernet Sauvignon. Prior to the pandemic their tasting room is open to guests 7 days a week as their focus their wines on estate vineyards.
4th generation winemaker, Peter Heitz, has been with Turnbull since 2007. Raised in Carneros he began learning about wine at a young age as weekends were spent farming in Calistoga. Peter studied at UC Santa Cruz before working for Beringer and working up to the role of assistant winemaker.
I really enjoyed his new release 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 91) which has good freshness and balance. This wine also shows good value which can be very hard to find in Napa. 2018 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon- Forward and delicious, the 2018 Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon shows mocha, and tar tones alongside a deep core of dark fruits on the nose. The palate has good freshness with medium bodied blackberry, black cherry cordial and espresso bean flavors. This is sturdy Cabernet Sauvignon that is great in its youth and will provide drinking enjoyment over the next decade to come. Drink 2020-2030- 91
