Love the new 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 93)

Love the new 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 93)

Klipsun

December 2, 2020

It was back in Spring 2017 when Terlato purchased the Klipsun Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA. Planted back in 1984, this is one of the historic sites on Red Mountain and this vineyard has earned some previous pedigree with the likes of Col Solari, Betz, DeLille and Quilceda Creek sourcing from the vineyard. The vineyard itself is a high desert setting set on gravely loam. Consulting winemaker Doug Fletcher describes the Klipsun Cabernet as “Like having one foot in Napa and one foot in Bordeaux. The wine shows bright, beautiful fruit and great richness often found inNapa, alongside earthier characteristics typically associated with Bordeaux such as dried herbs, crushed stone and impressive structure.”

They currently make only one wine from this vineyard, which is a really intriguing blend that even adds a bit of Syrah. The wine comes from the warm 2017 vintage and I was really impressed with the sense of balance with the wine. The 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 93) has a great veil of tension with a gorgeous array of aromatics and flavors. I can just imagine ponying up to a big ribeye steak with this beautiful wine. 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2017 Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon is a great blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with the reminder Merlot, Syrah and Malbec all sourced from the Klipsun Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA. Once on the nose this takes on heady cassis and anise tones with sagebrush, scorched earth and shades of dark chocolate shavings that all take shape in the glass. The palate is plush and highly elegant, showing a very pillowy mouthfeel and great texture. Ripe dark currants and black cherry cordial mingle with exotic spices, mocha and tar tones on the palate. This covers some seriously good range. Gorgeous to enjoy in its youth, this beautiful wine will cellar well for the next decade or more. Drink 2020-2033- 93
