Chateau de Sales

December 22, 2020

I love wineries with incredible histories. Chateau de Sales has been in the same family ownership since 1464 which is just remarkable. Just imagine all this family has been through throughout the centuries! The actual chateau was created in the early 1600’s, which was usual for Pomerol at the time. Chateau de Sales has the largest vineyard in Pomerol, a whopping 48 hectare vineyard which was planted to 73% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc.  I have never visited this chateau but the site is quite expansive and I will really look forward to a visit in 2021.

From 1982 to 2017 Bruno de Lambert led Chateau de Sales, taking over for his father, Henri, who had managed for nearly 40 years. In 2017, when their uncle and father retired, the 14 direct cousins and co-owners of Château de Sales rallied round to take over the estate, with their parents’ approval. They appointed one of their own, Marine Treppoz, to chair the new company. At the same time, they recruited a Chief Executive Officer, Vincent Montigaud, to manage it. Originally from Libourne, he spent 23 years with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, including 16 years as managing director of Domaine de Baronarques.

I chose to open a magnum of 2006 Chateau de Sales from my personal collection and was really glad I did. 2006 was highly challenging in this region but the wine en mag is just singing now at the fourteen year mark. The 2006 Chateau de Sales (OB, 90) shows really good tertiary aromatics and flavors from peat moss and wild mushroom with pipe tobacco to loamy soils and a good core of red and dark fruits. This is fully evolved wine that won’t get better with age but is like many wines from 2006 is fantastic to enjoy now. 🍷 Learn more about this storied house at https://www.chateau-de-sales.com Here is my review of the 2006 Chateau de Sales.

2006 Chateau De Sales Pomerol- Served from a magnum, the 2006 Chateau de Sales is at a really good place at now the fourteen year mark. Once on the nose this takes on leather and wild mushroom tones alongside menthol and pipe tobacco with wild blackberry tones and loamy soils that round out this expressive bouquet. The palate is fresh, with good verve remaining. Medium-bodied dark raspberry and kirsch tones combine with the lovely earthy and herbal tones on the palate. Like many 2006 Bordeaux wines, this is great now and won’t be improving. Drink 2020-2028- 90
