Here are the outstanding spring 2023 releases by Time & Direction.

Time & Direction

April 13, 2023

It was a joy being the first wine critic to write about the Time & Direction wines, which was founded several years back by the talented Steve Wells. Steve has a great story in wine, and began his wine education while waiting tables in New York City. Inspired by the world of wine Steve impressively passed both the Introductory and Certified Sommelier certifications through the the Court of Master Sommeliers within months of each other. Years later after chatting with Ron Coleman of Tamarack Cellars, Steve learned about the Center for Enology and Viticulture at Walla Walla Community College.

He made a huge move by coming from New York City to Walla Walla to attend the wine study program. He worked in the tasting room and cellar at Gramercy Cellars and learned about production and the wine business. After two productive years at Gramercy Steve then began working under eminent Washington winemaker, Aryn Morell, and helped in crafting 60 different wines for 6 different clients. Aryn allowed Steve to make his own wines at his production facility, and Time & Direction was born.

Wells crafts his wines from a range of sites including some great Royal Slope Vineyards. He has been making a world-class Rose wine for several years now. I love the 2022 Time & Direction ‘Thunderstone Vineyard’ Rose (OB, 92) which is made from Grenache grapes and comes off highly nuanced with a soft texture.Learn more about Time & Direction at https://timeanddirectionwines.com Here are the great new wines by Time & Direction.

2022 Time & Direction ‘Fretboard’ Viognier- The 2020 ‘Fretboard’ comes form the Corfu Crossing Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA. It is very difficult to put down once opened with its ripe green melon, kiwi, and starfruit tones on the palate, with a smooth texture and bright acidity. Enjoy now while the beautiful tension remains intact. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2022 Time & Direction ‘Thunderstone Vineyard’ Rose- Coming from the Royal Slope AVA, this 100% Grenache Rose offers a beautiful light pink hue in the glass. The sense of texture here is really beautiful, as very pure red fruits combine with white rose water and shades of orange rind on the palate. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2022 Time & Direction ‘121 Gigawatts’ White Wine- This outstanding blend comes from the Les Collines Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. This displays a lovely astringency and smooth texture once on the mouth. Pink grapefruit flavors alongside white peach and shades of green apple all combine on the palate. Drink 2023-2028- 92

Here we have the absolutely scintillating new 2018 MTR Productions Syrah.

MTR Productions

April 12, 2023

We have a very special wine to share today. MTR productions is a very special wine produced by Matt Reynvaan. For years I have admired this wine which comes from their ‘In The Rocks Vineyard’ in the Walla Walla Rocks AVA.  This has been a knockout wine since their first release with the 2012 vintage. This edition comes from the near perfect 2018 vintage — a warm year that saw few heat spikes and incredible conditions in The Rocks District.

The 2018 ‘Memory Found’ is up there with the top bottlings of this wine that I have tasted. This is a round and generous wine that will need a lot of air when opened. The 100% was aged in French oak and 600L oak puncheons and then saw 36 months of bottle age. II think that you will be blown away with the elegance, texture and flavor range here. Enjoy this beauty over several hours and watch it evolve! Learn more about this beautiful wine at http://www.mtr-productions.com Here is my review of the 2018 MTR Productions 'Memory Found' Syrah.

2018  MTR Productions ‘Memory Found’ Syrah- The 2018 MTR Productions ‘Memory Found’ Syrah is a world-class wine that is one of the great wines produced this outstanding vintage. Needing an hour in the decanter, this slowly unveils layers of green peppercorns and bacon fat alongside boysenberry and tar notes that all combine in the glass. The palate is soft and refined with incredible elegance. Nori, oyster sauce and beef drippings combine with cigar ash and shades of huckleberry all combine beautifully on the palate. Very seamless, as this glides throughout the drinking experience, the 2020 ‘Memory Found’ will live on for a decade or more.  Give this an hour of air and watch this stunner evolve. Drink 2023-2033- 97

Robert Brittan has crafted some new world-class wines for his namesake winery.

Brittan Vineyards

April 12, 2023

Brittan Vineyards

For many years I have admired the wines by Robert Brittan, former winemaker at Stags’ Leap Winery in Napa. Robert is a graduate of the UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program and founded Brittan Vineyards in 2004, acquiring a 128-acre hillside property with soils that are a mixture of glacial deposits and volcanic material, with a predominant presence of broken basalt.

I love terroir in the glass and this stony material brings out wonderful rocky tones in the wines that he makes, making them truly novel to the region. In addition to the Pinot Noir, Robert has 4 acres of Chardonnay and 1.5 acres of Syrah have been planted. In addition to his own wines, Robert serves as the winemaker for several other brands, including Bacus Vineyards, de Lancellotti Family Vineyards, Fairsing Vineyard and Winderlea Vineyard & Winery.

I adored the new 2021 Brittan Vineyards ‘Estate’ Chardonnay (OB, 94) which shows seriously good richness and stony character. I am not enamored by Willamette Valley Syrah by any means but this new 2018 Brittan ‘Estate’ Syrah (OB, 93) is up there with the finest that I have ever tasted from the valley. This is not lean and herbal but has great stuffing and varietal character, with a stony essence. Finally, the coup de gras in their lineup is one of the outstanding wines from Oregon that I have tasted all year. The 2016 Brittan Vineyards ‘Puncheon’ Pinot Noir (OB, 96) is a wine that was aged significantly in barrel. It is round, generous and utterly fabulous with its seamless texture and marvelous weight and length. Learn more about the great wines of Brittan Vineyards at http://www.brittanvineyards.com Here are the brilliant releases by Brittan Vineyards.

2021 Brittan Vineyards ‘Estate’ Chardonnay- The outstanding 2021 Brittan Vineyards Chardonnay comes from their estate vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. This comes off wonderfully stony with wet rock character alongside yellow plum, mango and shades of Pink Lady apple on the palate. Really good now, showing good length, weight and underlying tension, enjoy over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2018 Brittan Vineyads ‘Estate’ Syrah- This is not your typical Syrah from Oregon, as this was sourced from a warm vintage in the Willamette Valley.  Showing a dark core, this reveals a dusting of white pepper alongside brisket, dark cherry and shades of licorice on the nose. The palate is fresh and fragrant with a soft mouthfeel and loads of dark fruits with bright acidity and stony character. This is one of the great Willamette Valley Syrahs I have ever tasted. Drink 2023-2030- 93

2016 Brittan Vineyards ‘Puncheon’ Pinot Noir- The 2016 ‘Puncheon’ is a single barrel bottling made from Robert Britain’s Estate Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. It is one of the great Pinot Noirs that I have tasted in the past year out of Oregon. The nose comes off sensationally well with red currants, tobacco leaf, freshly tilled rocky soils and shades of cardamom. The palate is silky and downright ethereal with serious length and a finish that just won’t quit. This wonderfully displays the rocky profile of this site, with salty undertones an an ebullient core of bright and tart red fruits. A world-class wine, enjoy this beauty now and over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2033- 96

Here are some of the outstanding new wines by J Vineyards.

J Vineyards

April 10, 2023

One of the outstanding bubbles houses in California, J Vineyards was founded by one of the pioneering women in wine, Judy Jordan. It is quite remarkable that Jordan launched J all the way back in 1986, when she was 26 years of age. Jordan studied geology at Stanford and her father, Tom Jordan, founder of Jordan Vineyards, wanted to help her launch her own brand. The wines became marvelously successful as there were few premium bubbles houses at the time and the wine also offered considerable value at their entry level position.

I fondly recall visiting J Vineyards roughly 20 years ago and they had used a room towards the back of the facility as a very glamorous, club-like experience to taste wine. This was quite remarkable at the time and it shows what kind of innovation that Jordan created. In her early 50s, in 2015 Jordan decided to embark on a new adventure and she sold J Vineyards to Gallo. Today the winery remains an incredibly popular wine tasting location and the wines have been consistently great.

Tasting through the J wines I was very impressed with the entry level wine, the NV J Vineyards ‘Cuvee 20’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 90) which has lovey finesse and weight and offers really nice value at under 40 dollars. I love the new 2018 J Vineyards ‘Blanc de Noirs’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 93) which shows plenty of weight and beautiful underlying tension. Learn more about these outstanding wines at https://www.jwine.com/ and here are the outstanding new wines by J Vineyards.

NV J Vineyards ‘Cuvee 20’ Sparkling Wine- The NV ‘Cuvee 20’ comes from the Russian River Valley and blends 51% Chardonnay, and 41% Pinot Noir, with 8% Pinot Meunier. It is very round and generous on the palate with ripe red raspberry and melon fruits that combine with citrus blossom water on the palate. Enjoy now. Drink 2023-2028- 90

2018 J Vineyards ‘Blanc de Noirs’ Sparkling Wine- The 2018 ‘Blanc de Noirs’ is really thriving now at the five year mark. 100% Pinot Noir, his delivers lovely weight on the palate with shades of quince, Yakima cherry, white peach and ginger, with salty accents. The refined bubbles and silky mousse both awaken the senses, as this is marching on nicely right now. Enjoy over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2016 J Vineyards ‘Brut’ Sparkling Wine- The outstanding 2016 J Vineyards ‘Brut’ Sparkling Wine spent roughly 5 years on the less before disgorgement. This comes off wonderfully yeasty with sourdough bread notes that combine with nectarine, starfruit and suggestions of marzipan on the palate. Showing good underlying richness and finesse, this is beautiful stuff to enjoy now and over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

Here are the beautiful new 2019 wines by Spring Valley Vineyards.

Spring Valley Vineyards

April 6, 2023

Today we present one of the outstanding older Walla Walla wineries. Spring Valley Vineyards is located on old Walla Walla farm land that dates all the way back to the 1880s. It was roughly 100 years later, Shari and Dean Derby planted vines on the land and made their first vintage in 1999. The Derbys’ son Devin Corkrum Derby served as winemaker until his passing in 2004. Devin’s assistant and friend Serge Laville took over as winemaker and has been crafting some beautiful wines for many years. They have recently hired a new winemaker who continues the family tradition.

Kate Derby, sixth-generation family farmer and winemaker will be taking the helm at Spring Valley Vineyard, leading winemaking operations. She has worked at Spring Valley Vineyard for much of her life. Growing up she spent summers hoeing the vineyard rows with her grandfather and racking wine with Spring Valley’s first winemaker, her uncle Devin Derby. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, she began her full time career with Spring Valley in the tasting room, then on the road representing the brand across the country and finally joining the winemaking team in 2011. Look to the fantastic 2019 Spring Valley ‘Fredrick’ Red Wine (OB, 93) which is fantastic even now and shows beautiful herbal qualities from this slightly cooler vintage. Learn more about these outstanding wines at springvalleyvineyard.com Here are my reviews of the fantastic new Spring Valley wines.

2019 Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Frederick’ Red Wine- The 2019 ‘Frederick’ is a flat out delicious blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, 16% Syrah which was stored for 30 months in French oak before bottling. This shows wonderful elegance with a soft mouthfeel on the palate. Layers of kirsch, underbrush, red bell pepper and graphite combine with copious minerals on the palate. This is really good, well-balanced wine that will no doubt cellar well for another ten plus years. Drink 2023-2035- 93

2019 Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Uriah’ Red Wine- The 2019 Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Uriah’ is a fantastic wine that blends mostly Merlot (46%) with 23% Cabernet Franc and smaller portions Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The green bell pepper and garrigue notes from the 17% Petit Verdot are really singing right now, as creme de cassis, anise and dark raspberry tones all sing in unison on the nose. The palate is alluring and comes off a touch angular with medium bodied dark fruits that combine with chocolate and espresso grounds. Very well-balanced, enjoy now and over the next ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2019 Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Katherine Corkrum’ Cabernet Franc- This fantastic wine is named after Katherine Williams who was born in Wales and then later came all the way to Walla Walla, marrying Uriah Corkrum. This is an elegant style of Washington Cabernet Franc, with medium-bodied red bell pepper, red currants and tobacco leaf flavors that mingle with bright minerals on the palate. This will surely live on for another ten plus years. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2019 Spring Valley Vineyards ‘Nina Lee’ Syrah- Named after Nina Lee who enjoyed a dancing career throughout the Pacific Northwest back in the roaring 20s, this 2019 Syrah is only starting to begin its evolution. Initially quite reticent and needing an hour in the decanter, this slowly evolves, revealing black currents and tar notes alongside wild blackberry cobbler and shades of black licorice on the palate. Enjoy this outstanding Syrah now and over the next ten years to come. Drink 2023-2033- 92

Here is the incredible 2005 Quilceda Creek Merlot.

Quilceda Creek Merlot

April 5, 2023

Every so often I have a chance to dig deep into my cellar and uncork a beauty. Such was the case when I was on vacation in Las Vegas and I brought along a 2005 Quilceda Creek Merlot. For years I had admired this wine which was first discontinued and then later brought back with the 2019 vintage. For me, Quilceda Merlot was as soft and pillowy as it gets, truly rivaling any Merlot bottling in North America. I think that Quilceda Merlot would give any top wine from Napa or Sonoma a run for its money.

2005 had near perfect growing conditions in Washington State. This vintage remains one of my all time favorites, rivaling 2012 and 2018 for red wines. Sometimes older wines have cork issues but this beauty was cellared since release so it showed remarkably well.

Paul Golitzin had a penchant for Merlot. I was always sad when he stopped making the 100% Merlot bottlings. Since they have brought back this wine, there is a ton of promise, as I have been blown away with the new wines just as I was with the older wines. Learn more at quilcedacreek.com. Here is my review of the incredible 2005 Quilceda Creek Merlot.

2005 Quilceda Creek Merlot- Pillowy and soft as it gets, this opulent 2005 Merlot is still standing tall at nearly twenty years of age. Once on the nose this takes on layers of tobacco leaf, cocoa powder dusted dark cherry, loganberry liquor and exotic spices laced with espresso grounds. On the mouth this is soft and generous, revealing its trademark silky texture. Finishing long with deep dark fruits, shades of huckleberry and minerals alongside toasty oak, this is truly an astonishingly good wine to consume now. Drink 2023-2030- 97

Here is the incredible new 2020 La Rata Red Wine.

La Rata

April 4, 2023

It is my delight to share one of the unique wines of North America. What was originally a trial, Bionic Wines Director of Winemaking Elizabeth Bourcier’s La Rata Red Wine has become one of the outstanding cult wines out of the Pacific Northwest. For years Elizabeth has been touched by the insanely good Clos Erasmus wines of the Priorat region, Elizabeth made the bold decision blend both Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon together, since they wines tend to ripen at the similar times on the stony terroir of Milton-Freewater. Elizabeth chose to use Grenache from Armada Vineyard and Cabernet Sauvignon from En Cerise Vineyard. Now she has added a touch of Syrah to the equation. The wine was named “The Rat” and then Spanglish-cized: ‘La Rata’. The name ‘La Rata’ also connects with Elizabeth, as her zodiac sign which is the rat. This truly novel wine retails for under 100 dollars.

The 2020 La Rata (OB, 95) is a beautiful effort from a really tough vintage. This edition is slightly more towards weight and texture, like the 2018 and less towards tension like the 2019 and 2017. The flavor range here is nothing short of thrilling. Give this 30 minutes of air if enjoying now to really take on the head-turning flavor range. Learn more at http://laratawines.com/wines.html Here is my review of the thrilling 2020 La Rata Red Wine by Elizabeth Bourcier of Cayuse Vineyards.

2020 La Rata Red Wine- The gorgeous 2020 La Rata combines 53% Grenache with 37% Cabernet Sauvignon and the remainder Syrah. This shows serious range on the nose from Nori and charcuterie notes alongside green olives and tobacco leaf with boysenberry fruit coming in after some more air. The palate comes off fresh and polished with a bright level of minerality and a silky texture. Coming off clean this is a gorgeous effort that is drinking beautifully right now.  Just give this a little bit of air if you are enjoying now and watch this stunner evolve. Drink 2023-2028- 95

Here are a handful of the beautiful wines that I tasted for my 2015 Oregon Retrospective.

2015 Oregon Retrospective

April 3, 2023

Today we share the great wines of the 2015 vintage in the Willamette Valley. What is considered by most to be a stunning vintage, 2015 in Oregon meant warmth and consistency. 2015 fell between two other warm vintages, 2014 and 2016. I fondly recall the bold flavors coming from this vintage, as wines seemed to push richness but also have good underlying acidity. Bud break came several weeks early and most of the Willamette Valley saw higher than average temperatures during spring. A consistently warm summer saw harvest evolve earlier than most vintages. Just like 2014, the 2015 vintage yielded a large fruit set and large crop of ripe fruit. Sometimes when Oregon Pinot Noir is released, they need several years in the bottle. I always felt that the 2015 Oregon Pinots were sensational and very expressive once released.

2015 marked a special year for Lingua Franca’s Thomas Sarve as he had his first vintage as a winemaker. “2015 was fairly warm and it was a vintage that brought us everything to start Lingua Franca in the right direction. The vintage was very elegant yet powerful in some areas and vineyard. The Chardonnay grapes were fresh and delicate. I harvested my first grapes on Aug 23rd of 2015 which happened to be my birthday” he said.

For Raptor Ridge founder and winemaker Scott Shull he felt that 2015 “started early, hot and dry.” Things were moving along “Almost 3 weeks ahead of our norm, we had bud break in March and bloom by the end of May.  It seemed every grape flower set fruit, delivering huge clusters and yields.  Record summer heat, with 28 days above 90F during our June to Sept growing season, deeply ripened a pristine crop” he explained.

More glowing reviews came from Tendril owner and winemaker Tony Rynders. Tony has seen decades of Willamette Valley vintages and found his 2015 wines to show “impeccable balance and can be broadly defined as compelling” he said. “The proportioning of the wines is spot on for me.  They are not big bruisers…but for me they possess all the right stuff.  I also love the blue-fruit leaning flavor profile” he said. Tony has a penchant for 2015 as well as 2005. “I can’t wait for 2025!” he said.

Big Table Farm’s Clare Carver also adored the 2015 vintage. “With good fruit set, that set the stage” she said. “We knew we would have a long growing season ahead so the prudent gamble was to leave a little more fruit on the vines to slow maturation down so we could finish ripening in the shorter cooler days of late September and early October. This gamble paid off and as I believe you will taste, exceptionally balanced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with amazing aromatics, mouth filling flavors and yet the ethereal feeling of weightlessness.”

Big Table Farm once again crafted some stunning wines and I tasted them from magnum. I agree with the weightless nature of both of her wines. The wonderfully earthy ‘Sunnyside Vineyard’ and their seamless ‘Pelos-Sandberg Vineyard’ Pinot Noirs were scored 95 points. These are silky, elegant wines that are drinking magically right now. If you want some age worthy bottlings, look no further than the 2015 releases by Antica Terra and owner/winemaker Maggie Harrison. One of the wines of the vintage, the 2015 ‘Antikythera’ (OB, 96) is a knockout Pinot that is powerful and silky, like an iron fist in a velvet glove.

I was enamored by the wines made by winemaker and artist James Frey, as his Trisateum wines continue to somehow fly under the radar. The 2015 Trisaetum ‘Family Reserve’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95) will blow your mind with richness, depth and flavor complexity. Bergstrom had a world-class set of wines made including the finest white wine I tasted, their 2015 ‘Sigrid’ Chardonnay (OB, 96) which has everything you want in a top Oregon Chardonnay in terms of weight, finesse and depth. Similarly, the 2015 ‘Bergstrom Vineyard’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95) is complex and concentrated, really benefiting from a ton of air right now. For those who enjoy the stony terroir of the Willamette Valley, check out the 2015 Brittan ‘Cygnus Block’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95) by famed winemaker Robert Brittan, as this shows very salty basalt tones.

One of the outstanding White Pinots made, the 2015 Tendril ‘Pretender’ White Pinot Noir (OB, 95) is soft, inviting and shows insanely good texture with serious flavor range from nutty to earthy tones. Taste this wine and you will see why Rynders is the world’s master of White Pinot Noir.

Wines by Dundee Hills stalwarts Domaine Drouhin and Domaine Serene were some of the finest wines of this report. I am totally enamored by the 2015 Domaine Drouhin ‘Laurene’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95), which is rich and viscous and even still quite primary as this beauty will continue to flourish for decades. A killer value is the 2015 Domane Serene ‘Evenstad Reserve’ Pinot Noir (OB, 95) which is amongst the best wines for the price. This was so good even upon release and has evolved even further now. Finally, a wine that for me is the wine of the vintage, the 2015 Domaine Serene ‘Monogram’ Pinot Noir (OB, 98) is showing even better than when I first tasted in roughly five years ago. Sinfully good, dense and hedonistic, this barrel-selection wine is one of the finest wines that I have ever tasted out of Oregon.

It is clear that greatness was achieved throughout the top Oregon producers in 2015. These are wines that will be extremely gratifying for collectors to enjoy now and many years to come. Don’t be afraid to open many of these if you enjoy a heady, fruit-driven and spirited Oregon Pinot Noir. Here are the top wines from my 2015 Oregon Pinot Noir Retrospective.

00 Wines

2015 00 Wines ‘VGR’ Pinot Noir- This is now the third time that I have tasted the outstanding 2015 ‘VRG’ Pinot Noir. The wine has softened considerably and is just as good as my first approach several years back. Once on the nose this takes on layers of red rose petals that collide with damp earth, orange zest and suggestions of marionberry candy. The palate shows good stuffing and verve, slowly evolving into the earthy tertiary tones. Gratifying on the mouth, this viscous bottling is all leading to a very long, red fruit and mineral-laden finish. Already nicely evolved, enjoy this beauty now and over the next decade. Drink 2023-2032- 93

Alexana

2015 Alexana ‘Terroir Series’ Pinot Noir- Very ripe right now, the 2015 ‘Terroir Series’ Pinot Noir offers cola, black cherry compote, salty soils and suggestions of black raspberry on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, with a good acid backbone, this is delicious to consume now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2029- 93

Antica Terra

2015 Antica Terra ‘Antikythera’ Pinot Noir- Named after the Antikythera Mechanism which is a geared, bronze-age device that was created to calculate precise astronomical positions, this glorious Pinot Noir was sourced from their estate rocky vineyard in the northernmost part of the Eola-Amity Hills. Deep and concentrated, with very soft tannins, the wine shows off an ebullient core of red fruits that parade with orange blossom, and suggestions of freshly tilled salty soils. Finishing very long, enjoy this stunner over the next decade. Drink 2023-2033- 96

2015 Antica Terra ‘Ceras’ Pinot Noir- The 2015 ‘Ceras’ is another stunning bottling by winemaker Maggie Harrison. Hints of bergamot, Morello cherry, white pepper and kumquat zest all fill the nose. The palate is voluptuous and soft, with silky tannins that frame a core of Satsuma orange zest, guava puree, ripe cranberry and salty soils. Very weightless and seamless throughout the drinking experience, this is sensational wine to savor now and over the next decade. Drink 2023-2033- 95

2015 Antica Terra ‘Botanica’ Pinot Noir- Sourced from the Willamette Valley, the ‘Botanica’ shows amazing aromatic range on the nose with blood orange zest, tilled rocky soils, dark currants and suggestions of exotic spices. The palate is a knockout with refined tannins and a silky mouthfeel. The glorious length and bright underlying acidity really make this tick. Enjoy now and over the next decade. Drink 2023-2033- 95

Archery Summit

2015 Archery Summit ‘Arcus Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The flagship Pinot Noir from Archery Summit, the 2015 ‘Arcus Vineyard’ is comprised of Pommard, as well as Dijon clones 667, 777 and 114. This Pinot Noir spent 9 months in 39% new French oak barrels prior to bottling. Very deeply colored, the 2015 ‘Arcus’ offers sandalwood, red cherry preserves and raspberry coulis with salty soils on the nose. The palate is very fresh and polished with a silky texture and wonderful length. This shows really nice concentration and poise from this warm vintage, as this is best savored over the next decade. Drink 2023-2034- 94

Cadet, Boutes, Francois Frères and Billon

Argyle

2015 Argyle ‘Spirit Hill Vineyard’ Sparkling Wine- This edition of the ‘Spirit Hill Vineyard’ is a 100% Chardonnay bottling that saw some extended lees storage before disgorgment. Lemon zest and sourdough bread flavors come together with beautiful tight bubbles and salty undercurrents on the palate. The length right now is outstanding as this beauty will easily take on another decade of life. This is Oregon bubbles, refined. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2015 Argyle ‘Nuthouse’ Chardonnay- The 2015 ‘Nuthouse’ Chardonnay is a really beautiful showing now at the eight year mark. Silky smooth on the mouth, this shows a refined texture and a glorious level of flavor range right now. Banana, white peach, peat moss, salty minerals and Marcona almond flavors all brilliantly combine. This is becoming more and more earthy since it was released and I have little doubt this beauty will carry on for another eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2015 Argyle ‘Reserve’ Pinot Noir- Really delicious right out of the gate, the 2015 ‘Reserve’ comes from three separate vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Black tea, exotic spices and a nice core of red fruits greet you, with loamy soil accents. Enjoy now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2015 Argyle ‘Nuthouse’ Pinot Noir- A masterclass in 2015, I absolutely loved this wine upon release and love it even more now. Bing cherry, teaberry, pine needles and shades of baking spices all combine on the nose. The palate shows a great combination of weight and bright underlying acidity, with this wine emerging into the tertiary notes of wild mushroom and forest floor, with lovely red and dark fruits, with citrus rind notes adding to the nuance. A complete wine, enjoy this beautiful Pinot Noir now and over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2031- 95

Beaux Frères

2015 Beaux Frères ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir- Very fresh, pretty and fragrant, the 2015 ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir offers beautiful red florals on the nose with kumquat zest and shades of wet stone with ripe cranberry on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with a silky texture. Layers of medium to full-bodied red fruits greet you, as this is quite forward and delicious now — nowhere near secondary tones. Enjoy now and easily over the next ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

Bergstrom

2015 Bergstrom ‘Old Stones’ Chardonnay- The 2015 ‘Old Stones’ is an impressive, terroir-driven bottling that is really singing in its sweet spot now. Downright oily and intense with its unctuous texture, this offers wet gravel and cantelope flavors that combine with ripe pear and toasted hazelnut on the palate. Still very bright, with sterling tension, this beauty will cellar well over the next eight plus years — but no reason to wait! Drink 2023-2032- 94

2015 Bergstrom ‘Sigrid’ Chardonnay- A barrel selection wine that I have not tasted for several years, the 2015 ‘Sigrid’ Chardonnay is simply a masterclass by Josh Bergstrom. The nose brings you straight to Mersault with toasty oak, marzipan, lemon rind dusted brioche and suggestions of cardamom. The exotic bouquet brings you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The palate is seamless and weightless, showing great underlying verve and texture. A total stunner, the salty undertones produce a mouth-watering effect, as this top class Chardonnay is simply irresistible now. Drink 2023-2037- 96

2015 Bergstrom ‘Silice’ Pinot Noir- The 2015 ‘Silice’ is sourced from ancient sandy soils from the Chehalem Mountains AVA. Bergstrom has been farming this site since 2001, as the wine shows off a lush mouthfeel. Very pure red raspberry and guava fruits collide with stony and salty undertones on the palate. Very delicious and primary now with its beautiful core of red fruits, I see no reason to sit on this beauty. Enjoy now and over the next eight years. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2015 Bergstrom ‘Le Pre Du Col Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- This comes from the 16 acre Bergstorm estate site which is located roughly a mile from the winery. Planted back in 2006 to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this opens with a very delicate array of red fruits that combine with tobacco leaf, tilled soils and suggestions of Earl Grey tea. Complex, round and generous on the mouth, this is drinking beautifully now and will continue to evolve well for another decade. Drink 2023-2033- 94

Here is the absolutely incredible new Result of A Crush Rose wine.

Result of A Crush

April 3, 2023

It has now been more than a year since I have written about some of Washington’s finest value wines. Result of A Crush was a project that was started more than a decade back to create a second tier of Reynvaan wines. Amanda Reynvaan and Angela Reynvaan Garratt, sisters of consulting winemaker Matt Reynvaan, sought to create wines that are more readily available and affordable than the Reynvaan wines. Most of these wines are in the 20-30 dollar range. While they might be perceived as ‘Baby Reynvaan’ wines, each bottling is a serious, stand alone wine. Years ago Matt Reynvaan made an incredible Rose wine from the 2015 vintage. He swore to me that he would never again make a Rose wine. I loved that Rose so much that I enjoyed it prior to my engagement.

I am blown away once again with the 2022 Result of A Crush ‘Summer Cuvee’ Rose (OB, 93) which is a wine to buy by the case. This is a simply incredible value that is very stony and shows off a gorgeous texture. Trust me, do not miss out on this one. Learn more about Result of A Crush at http://resultofacrush.com and here are my reviews of the great new wines by Result of A Crush.

2020 Result of A Crush Rose- Matt Reynvaan has not made this wine since the 2015 vintage which yielded a record early harvest. This comes off wonderfully flinty on the nose with ripe red raspberry and red cherry notes alongside shades of white rose water. Do not miss out on this impossible to resist Rose bottling that will no doubt cellar well over the next seven years. Drink 2023-2030- 93

2021 Result of A Crush White Wine- The 2021 Result of A Crush White Wine is a crazy good blend of mainly Grenache Blanc (75%) with the remainder Marsanne from their vineyard in the Rocks District. This shows wonderful stony character with great tension and a smooth mouthfeel upon entry. Gooseberry and kiwi flavors combine with shades of nectarine skin on the palate, with wet stony accents. Great photo of Fairsing Vineyard founders Mary Ann and Mike McNally.

Fairsing Vineyard

March 30, 2023

For years I have loved the outstanding values by Fairsing Vineyard. This family owned site is well-known for their outstanding Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs. Stewards of their land, Mary Ann and Mike McNally purchased Fairsing Vineyard in the summer of 2005, with the purchase of approximately 200 acres of harvested forestland.  Then in October 2006 eighteen acres of vines were successfully planted and trellised with the assistance of Oregon’s collegial winegrower community. Vineyard development continued at roughly five acres per year, with a total of thirty-eight acres of Pinot noir and five acres of Chardonnay currently under vine. Vines at Fairsing are nestled among one-hundred acres of forest, and seventy acres have been reforested with 18,000 conifers, 3,000 deciduous trees, and more than 6,000 native shrubs. This is a gorgeous, scenic location that is a must visit for any Pinotphile.

Winemaker Robert Brittan makes incredible wines for Fairsing and his namesake brand. His new wines showed beautiful poise and weight from the 2019 vintage. Do not miss out on the 2019 Fairsing Vineyard ‘Sullivan’ Pinot Noir (OB, 93) which is fresh and vibrant with lovely stony accents. Great photo of Gilles Nicault and his Cote Nicault.

Cote Nicault

March 30, 2023

Cote Nicault is a story about Gilles Nicault, one of Washington’s great winemakers. His family has a history in agriculture dating back to the 1930s in Africa. Growing up Gilles was exposed to the great wines of the Rhone Valley by his father who was an enophile.

Gilles eventually decided to study winemaking and viticulture at the acclaimed University of Avignon. It was a huge move for Gilles to move to the United States and he landed in Walla Walla back in 1994, working for Woodward Canyon. Working there he realized that wines from Washington State rivaled anything in the world. He was then the first winemaker for Long Shadows Vintners in 2003, and for many years he has served as Director of Winemaking and Viticulture there.

Côte Nicault is a Rhone inspired wine that Gilles makes each year. The wine is all about balance between Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. It is a very different wine to the Long Shadows ‘Sequel’ — one with more finesse, subtlety and nuance. I absolutely love the new 2019 Côte Nicault Red Wine (OB, 95) which is deep and concentrated with pure dark fruits and herbal accents. This beauty is already nicely evolved. Learn more about these great wine at https://www.cotenicault.com and here is the great new future release by Côte Nicault.

2019 Côte Nicault Red Wine- The 2019 Côte Nicault is a downright killer wine from this slightly cooler vintage in the Columbia Valley. The Côte Nicault blends Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah and comes off quite spicy on the nose, with white pepper dusted bacon, red currants, tobacco leaf and shades of black licorice. The palate is rich and concentrated with a great mineral backbone that holds everything together nicely. A generous combination of red and dark fruits greet you, with garrigue and blood orange zest notes, as this beauty is already singing at the four year mark. Enjoy now and over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2035- 95

Here are the gorgeous new wines by Massican.

Massican

March 30, 2023

Today we share one of the most intriguing brands of the Napa Valley. It is hard to believe that Massican was founded all the way back in 2009. The brand is the brainchild of innovator and winemaker Dan Petroski, who sought to make old-world inspired white wines in the Napa Valley where Cabernet is unabashedly king. These wines continue to be affordably priced, where entry level Chardonnays in Napa command 100 dollars and sometimes more. For years Dan made world-class wines at Larkmead which rivaled some of the finest wines of the region — at a fraction of the price of cult competitors. For those who love high-acid white wines with texture, these are definitely for you. Dan has performed well regardless of vintage and even made world-class wines with the 2020 vintage.

Look to the gorgeous 2022 Massican ‘Annia’ White Wine (OB, 94) which uniquely combines Tocai Fruliano, Ribolla Gialla and Chardonnay. I don’t think you will find anything quite like this in the world. Learn more about these novel, one of a kind wines at massican.com Here are my reviews of the gorgeous new Massican wines.

2022 Massican ‘Gemina’ White Wine- The 2022 ‘Gemina’ is a unique blend of 62% Greco with the remainder Falanghina. The name is inspired by an ancient varietal that dates back to the first century AD, called Aminea Gemina. Ripe pear, vanilla cream and shades of lychee mark the nose, with nutty undertones. The palate shows lovely weight and a downright oily texture. Layers of pretty lemon oil and melon fruits collide with suggestions of baking spices on the palate. Drink 2023-2030- 94

2022 Massican ‘Annia’ White WIne- The 2022 ‘Annia’ is one of the unique white wines made in Napa. A blend of Ribolla Galla, Tocai Friulano and Chardonnay, this delivers a silky smooth texture once on the mouth. One of the truly great wineries in the Santa Barbara area, Sanguis is the brainchild of winemaker Matthias Pippig. For years I have admired these wines that tend to literally scream terroir. The wines are made with great concentration and underlying verve. Speaking with Matthias over Zoom, we tasted each of his new wines. In terms of vintages, Matthias loved the wines made in 2019. “2019 was definitely a conducive vintage for us” he said.  “I keep notes but I like to remember things that stuck out. 2019 didn’t have anything like that and to me those are the great vintages because the one things that wines want are the consistency. The heat beating can be an issue with beating the prettiness out of the grapes. Everything shuts down with that.”

He continued “We work with vineyards now where we don’t have huge pressure to pick before we really want to. I like to pick on the early side so that we have alcohol levels that are in the low 14s. But when we made Syrah from places like Happy Canyon or Ballard Canyon it gets really hot there and there are times when we need to pick. We grow Syrah mostly in the Santa Rita Hills now and also at the base of Ballard Canyon now and we don’t have that pressure for the most part.”

Pippig did not notice any smoke influence in his 2020 wines. I certainly did not notice any in the scintillating 2020 Sanguis ‘Insouciance’ Rose (OB, 95) which is essentially masquerading as a red wine. It is dense, chewy and one of a kind that I think you will admire. One of the great Santa Barbara County Chrdonnays that I have tasted in the past year is the 2019 Sanguis ‘Loner the Golden Hour’ Chardonnay (OB, 96) which shows insane salty terror and a minute long finish.  Even better was the incredible 2019 Sanguis ‘1/1’ Grenache (OB, 97) which offers everything you want in a Grenache from this region. Very salty, savory and jam-packed full of bright fruits, this is a very geeky but also very delicious rendition of this varietal. Learn more about these incredible wines at sanguiswine.com and here are my reviews of the new wines by Sanguis.

2019 Sanguis ‘Loner the Golden Hour’ Chardonnaay- Sourced from the John Sebastiano vineyard, the wine utilizes one Wente clone block at the top of the hill at one thousand feet, as well as a block utilizing clone 76. This was stored in neutral oak puncheons before bottling, as the wine shows some very good cellaring potential. The mesmerizing aromatics bring you back to the glass, arousing the senses with honeysuckle, white peach, wet stone, and Pazazz apple. The palate is very focused and concentrated with unbelievably good length. Wait for the minute long finish. Drink 2023-2032- 96

2019 Sanguis ‘Handful of Ghosts’ White Wine- The ‘Handful of Ghosts’ is a hauntingly good proprietary blend of Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier that was stored in seasoned oak and stainless steel for 25 months prior to bottling. Cantaloupe, marzipan and cardamom notes all fill the nose. The palate is rich and viscous with a seamless texture and gobs of underlying finesse, with salty undercurrents. Quite honestly a joy to consume right now, give this an hour in the decanter if you want to open in its heady youth. Drink 2023-2036- 95

2019 Sanguis ‘Lady, Birds & Boy’ White Wine- A blend of Roussanne, Marsanne and Malvasia Bianca, the ‘Lady, Birds & Boy’ is a stunning new bottling that is highly fragrant and intense. Gorgeous aromas of honeysuckle flower from the Malvasia shine on the nose alongside ripe nectarine and baking spice dusted pear tones. The palate is all-consuming and evolves with gorgeous melon, citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Wait for the near minute-long cream and mineral-laden finish. I’m pretty sure that you won’t taste anything quite like this. A truly one of a kind blend, be sure to give this beauty an hour of air before consuming. Drink 2023-2036- 95

2020 Sanguis ‘Insouciance’ Rose- The heady and hefty 2020 Rose by Sanguis is now the tenth edition of this wine. A literal cornucopia of aromas greet you from wild mushroom and peat moss tones alongside ripe Yakima cherry and green melon notes. The palate shows off a velvety texture, with serious length and weight. This might come off as big and bold for a Rose, yet the bright finesse and seamless experience throughout the mid-palate. Juicy and also quite fragrant, this is drinking marvelously now and will live on for another eight to ten years. Drink 2023-2031- 95

2019 Sanguis ‘1/1’ Grenache- The outstanding ‘1/1’ Grenache is very translucent in the glass. Coming from the Watch Hill Vineyard, this Grenache was co-fermented with 50% whole cluster inclusion and small portions of Roussanne and Syrah, stored in a seasoned 400L puncheon for 27 months before bottling. The wine comes off very Pinotesque and very sexy, with red rose water, blood orange zest, guava and copious minerals, with salty soils on the palate. World-class, with its smooth texture and delightful drinkability, this stunning new Grenache will live on for at least another decade. But why wait? Drink 2023-2031- 97

2019 Sanguis ‘1/1’ Syrah- Inky dark in the glass, the ‘1/1’ Syrah is sourced from the famed John Sebastiano Vineyard which is a very windy site which is mostly planted to Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah and Chardonnay. This site is planted to own-rooted Estrella-Syrah vines, as the wine was 50% whole-cluster fermented on native yeasts with large portion (9%) of Viognier. Downright voluptuous on the mouth, this reveals in its flavor range from smoked brisket and black licorice candy to dark chocolate shavings, honeysuckle water, sweet pipe tobacco and shades of blackberry pie. Delicious and heady, yet maintaining a bright acid backbone, coming off very weightless, enjoy this stunning bottling now and over the next ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 96

2019 Sanguis ‘Verve’ Red Wine- Always one of the truly unique wines that I taste each year, the 2019 ‘Verve’ blends Grenache, Syrah and Roussanne. Stored in a combination of used l 400 and 500L barrels for 24 months, this beautiful wine opens with a bright bouquet of garrigue with wet stone, Christmas spices, white pepper and copious dark fruits. Despite being translucent in the glass, the palate is plush and soft, with a generous mouthfeel and beautiful length. Finishing long with red fruits and minerals, this is a stunning wine to consume now and over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2019 Sanguis ‘Optimist’ Red Wine- A blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Roussanne and Viognier, this was stored in nearly all neutral oak puncheons prior to bottling. The nose smells wonderfully smoky from the Syrah, with white pepper dusted brisket, black florals and blackberry compote tones that combine with white flowers and green bell pepper adding to the complexity. The palate is silky and dense with great finesse and length. A rich core of red and dark fruits greet you with chocolate, garrigue and lighter citrus blossom tones. Drink 2023-2038- 96

2019 Sanguis ‘The Modern’ Red Wine- The captivating ‘The Modern’ is always released in the Fall and is mostly Syrah blended with small parts Viognier and Petit Verdot. This saw no new oak and shows off dried sage and green bell pepper notes on the nose with baking spices and suggestions of dark chocolate shavings. The palate is very soft and refined with silky tannins that frame a core of gorgeous red and dark fruits, with lemongrass and Satsuma orange zest accents. This blend is absolutely singing now and enjoy over the next ten plus years. Drink 2023-2035-95

2019 Sanguis ‘Bossman’ Syrah- Deeply colored in the glass, the highly perfumed 2019 Sanguis ‘Bossman’ Syrah is another stunning release by Matthias Pippig. Smoked beef ribs and green peppercorns march on with menthol and violets. The palate is wonderfully concentrated, with bright acidity that brings you back to the glass for more enjoyment. Drink 2023-2038- 95

2019 Sanguis ‘The Highlands’ Red Wine- Mostly Cabernet Franc with smaller parts Grenache and Petit Verdot, the wine was stored in neutral puncheons before bottling. The aromatic range is seriously good from green bell pepper and salty soils to black currants and red and dark florals. The salinity is astonishingly good and runs through the core of rich dark fruits with espresso bean and a lingering finish. Drink 2023-2038- 96

2018 Sanguis ‘Songs Without Words’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The gorgeous 2019 ‘Songs Without Words’ comes from 20+ year old Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Santa Ynez Valley. A silky blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon with roughly 10% Petit Verdot this spent three years in seasoned oak barrels before bottling.  The wine is wonderfully herbal and very old-world on the nose, with sage and red bell pepper alongside red currants and freshly tilled loamy soils. The palate comes of fresh and vibrant, showing considerably younger than its five years of age. Soft, round and generous on the mouth, this very savory bottling will be sure to satisfy over the next decade or more. Drink 2023-2035- 95

The 2020 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Grenache (OB, 99) is a monumental effort from this challenging vintage.

Cayuse Vineyards

March 28, 2023

I will fully admit to being a full-fledged terroir junkie. There is just something about novel terroir that I find to be so invigorating. Cayuse Vineyards is a story about terroir.  Christophe Baron was raised in Champagne and was was the youngest heir of the famed Champagne house, Baron Albert. His ancestors had worked the land at Baron Albert since 1677. As a young boy Christophe worked harvests and eventually studied viticulture in Burgundy and Champagne. After some travels he was drawn to the Willamette Valley, and was set on making great Pinot Noir. One day he was outside of Walla Walla and saw terroir inspired by the stony galets of Chateauneuf du Pape. We are all thankful that he decided to plant his vineyard back in 1997 and the rest has been history. Christophe has had unparalleled success in the Walla Walla Valley since that time, crafting stony wines that show an incredible combination of tension, range and terroir.

Usually I sit with Christophe and Bionic Wines director of winemaking, Elizabeth Bourcier, to taste their wines.  This year I took my time with the wines in my home over many hours. 2020 was a vintage that was marred by the smoke events during harvest. Prior to that it was a fantastic growing season and another warm vintage that did not have major heat spikes. I am enamored by the wines that I tasted by Cayuse in the 2020 vintage. His new Rose, coming from 2021, the 2021 Cayuse Vineyards ‘Edith’ Rose (OB, 94) is amongst the finest Rose wines in North America. I was blown away with the  2020 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Red Wine (OB, 99) which is a one of a kind Grenache that is very Chateau Rayas in dazzling minerality and texture, as well as sumptuous flavor range. Similarly good was the 2020 Cayuse Vineyards ‘Bionic Frog’ Syrah (OB, 98) which is dense and chewy with serious stuffing. Learn more about these incredible future release wines at https://cayusevineyards.com Here are the incredible wines by Cayuse Vineyards (release fall 2023).

2021 Cayuse Vineyards ‘Cailloux Vineyard’ Viognier- Each year Cayuse Vineyards makes a very small amount of 100% Viognier from the Cailloux Vineyard set outside the town of Milton-Freewater, Oregon. This 2021 rendition was aged in a combination of concrete and stainless steel before prior to bottling, as the wine exudes class with its concentration and underlying finesse. This shows considerably better warmed up a bit, as layers of nutmeg dusted cantaloupe, juicy nectarine, starfruit, papaya and wet rock all give this incredible flavor complexity. This finishes very long with a touch of vanilla cream and stony minerals. Gorgeous to consume in its youth, this will cellar well for another five plus years. Drink 2023-2029- 95

This is incredibly clean wine considering the conditions at harvest. Generous and done in a slightly richer style than the 2019, this beauty is best enjoyed now and over the next few years. Big Table Farm

March 27, 2023

Another year, another beautiful set of releases by Big Table Farm. A pillar of consistency in the Willamette Valley, Big Table Farm was founded by Clare Carver and Brian Marcy — two of the nicest people you will meet in the industry. Marcy has a longstanding history in the wine industry, formerly serving as winemaker for Neyers prior to moving north and settling in the Willamette Valley. These are wines that age brilliantly and are known for great texture and beautiful pure red and dark fruits, with loads of nuance. I can’t wait to try the wines from their new estate plantings someday.

The new wines come mainly from the 2021 vintage and they did a glorious job managing this warm vintage. I love the new 2021 Big Table Farm ‘Willamete Valley’ Pinot Noir (OB, 94) which is a knockout wine for the price. Deep and concentrated, with wonderful underlying tension, this is one to buy by the case. Great photo here of Dan and Amy Wampfler who craft some sensational wines for Abeja.

Abeja

March 24, 2023

As I approached the long, winding road, I saw the beautiful vineyards creating a panoramic effect. Abeja is one of the most beautiful sites you will see in the Walla Walla Valley. Co-winemaker Dan Wampfler greeted me, as we walked into their brand new production facility that is a sight to be seen. Brand new tanks and fresh concrete was everywhere and the smells of new French oak permeated throughout the building.

For years I have admired the wines by Abeja who have consistently produced some of the finest wines of the Walla Walla Valley. Wines were first made by illustrious winemaker John Abbott, and Abeja is set in the foothills of Walla Walla’s Blue Mountains. Abeja has eight luxury cottages, with a large farmhouse, creeks, and gardens on the 38 acre property. Abeja relies on the winemaking talents of Dan Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler. Both Dan and Amy have more than 30 years of combined winemaking experience. They work closely together on the wines and craft truly one of the great overall lineups of wine. There is little doubt that the Abeja Chardonnay has been one of the benchmarks for Washington State.

One of the best editions of this wine that I have tasted over the past decade, the 2021 Abeja Chardonnay (OB, 94) is rich with outstanding flavor complexity and great underlying tension. Do not miss out on the gorgeous 2020 Abeja Merlot (OB, 94) which is also very dense and layered, showing a very soft texture. Learn more about this outstanding winery at http://www.abeja.net/ Here are the great new wines by Abeja.

2021 Abeja Chardonnay- Coming from the Cello, Connor Lee and Abeja Estate Vineyards, this outstanding Chardonnay was aged for ten months in only 14% new French oak barrels before bottling. This has the very classic Abeja texture, as the mouthfeel and viscosity comes off very gratifying —as does the level of mouth-watering acidity. Layers of banana cream, roasted pineapple, and Macadamia nut with salty and silty undercurrents all wonderfully collide in unison on the palate. A joy to drink now, this has some cellaring potential, as this will pick up earthy and nutty notes as it ages. Drink 2023-2030- 94

2020 Abeja Merlot- For years Abeja has made a very strong reputation for Merlot wines. This edition has just a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon blended in and is sourced from the Abeja Estate, Mill Creek and Sagemoor Farms properties. Silky and pillowy on the mouth, this unveils chocolate covered red raspberry, sagebrush and loamy soil notes on the palate, with scorched earthy accents. With good viscosity and verve, this is fantastic stuff to consume now and over the next eight years. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2020 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2020 Abeja Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a range of sites throughout the Columbia Valley and blends 79% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The herbal notes are wonderful on the palate, with violets, cracked white pepper, green herbs and rabbit brush accents. Heady dark fruits mingle well with copious minerals, and dark chocolate cake flavors. Really good now, enjoy this over the next eight years. Drink 2023-2031- 94

Here is the incredible new 2021 Passing Time Chardonnay.

Passing Time

March 23, 2023

Friends, I think most of us are in love with a great pro football story. Passing Time was founded by NFL legends Dan Marino and Damon Huard, utilizing the talents of famed winemaker Chris Peterson. The wines have been amazing since their first 2012 vintage. Chris Peterson was the first graduate of the Walla Walla Community College’s Enology and Viticulture program and working at DeLille for eight years under legendary winemaker Chris Upchurch. He makes wines that are very well-structured and are built for aging. I love the bold style that he utilizes with these wines, which show great acidity and aging potential. Trust me, these age so gracefully.

2020 as a vintage has been very inconsistent. It is a producer vintage and the new wines by Passing Time beautifully illustrate why this vintage is one to buy if you look carefully. I love the new 2020 Passing Time ‘Columbia Valley’ Red Wine (OB, 93) which shows good flavor range and bright acidity. No reason to cellar this one. Even better is the incredible new 2021 Passing Time Chardonnay (OB, 95) which is very dense and shows nice underlying poise with a silky smooth texture. This is quite simply one of the finest Washington Chardonnays that I have tasted over the past year. Learn more about this fantastic  boutique winery at http://www.passingtime.com Here is my review of the new Passing Time wines.

2021 Passing Time ‘Columbia Valley’ Chardonnay- Brimming with intensity and weight, the 2021 ‘Columbia Valley’ by Passing Time is an incredible effort in this warm vintage. Mostly sourced from the Bacchus Vineyard (75%) as well as the Boushey Vineyard (25%), the wine was stored in only 15% new French oak before bottling. A bright golden hue greets you in the glass, with a silky mouthfeel. Toasty brioche, lemon zest, nectarine, roasted pineapple and shades of cardamom dusted starfruit all wonderfully combine on the palate. Don’t serve this beauty too warm so you can take in the scintillating range of flavors. This is a knockout wine in 2021. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2020 Passing Time ‘Columbia Valley’ Red Wine- Dense, chewy and loaded with rich black fruit flavors, the 2020 ‘Columbia Valley’ Red Wine by Passing Time is a serious value from this challenging vintage. Mostly coming from the Discovery, Klipsun and Seven Hills Vineyards, this nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon wine (7% Merlot blended in) displays mocha, tar and violets on the nose with shades of menthol. The palate is smooth and medium to full-bodied with a soft texture. Copious minerals combine with the deep core of dark fruits and hints of creosote. Really good now, this will continue to evolve over the next five plus years. No reason to wait! Drink 2023-2028- 93

Great photo of famed actor Kyle MacLachlan and his wine.

Pursued By Bear

March 23, 2023

Today we share the wines from one of Washington’s most famous actors, Kyle MacLachlan. Originally from Yakima, MacLachlan probably best known for his major role in the hit ‘90s drama, Twin Peaks which also returned to television several years back. For many years now MacLachlan relies on the talented hands of Dan Wampfler to craft his wines. I have had many vintages of these limited production wines and the latest releases are as good as any. Both releases come from the somewhat challenging 2019 vintage for reds in Washington. Only limited production, MacLachlan produces a limited amount of Cabernet and Syrah each year, as well as a killer Rose called ‘Blushing Bear.’ Dan sources from a range of great sources throughout the Columbia Valley. For anyone who is a fan of the outstanding Abeja wines, I think you will be enamored by Pursued By Bear. I am really excited to check out the new tasting room in Walla Walla which opened back in January.

I think the new 2019 Pursued By Bear ‘Baby Bear’ Syrah (OB, 94) is a total knockout with great viscosity and verve, showing some good aging potential. This one is everything you want in Columbia Valley Syrah. Learn more about this awesome project out of Washington at http://www.pursuedbybearwine.com/ Here are the great new wines by actor Kyle MacLachlan and his winery, Pursued By Bear.

2019 Pursued By Bear Cabernet Sauvignon- Coming from a range of sites in the Columbia Valley, the Cabernet Sauvignon has a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Franc blended in. Stored for 22 months in French oak, this offers alluring aromas of red cherry, sandalwood and shades of wild blackberry, with a kiss of milk chocolate. The palate is soft and refined with silky tannins that line a core of black fruits, with sweet pipe tobacco and chocolate spice cake. Really good now, enjoy over the next fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038- 95

2019 Pursued By Bear ‘Baby Bear’ Syrah- The 2019 ‘Baby Bear’ comes from the Lewis and Phinny Hill Vineyards, as this was stored in French oak for 34 months prior to bottling. The wonderful blue fruits and flinty tones from the Lewis Vineyard fruit is shining brightly right now. Full-bodied and powerful, with refined tannins and a silky mouthfeel, this is glorious wine to consume now and over the next twelve years. Drink 2023-2035- 94

We present the beautiful 2018 wines by Champagne Christophe Baron.

Champagne Christophe Baron

March 22, 2023

Many years back I heard from Christophe about his new project, Champagne Christophe Baron (CCB) and I could hardly believe my ears. “We are doing 100% Pinot Meunier” he exclaimed. “And Zero Dosage!” “Wow! Now that is something I have to try!” I chimed back. The magnum only and mailing list-only Champagne Christophe Baron are all zero dosage bottlings that showcase 100% Pinot Meunier. I think you would be hard-pressed to find Pinot Meunier this good in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I love Charles Mignon and MV Krug who do some great PM wines. I just love the density and flavor/aromatic range of this varietal when it is done right.

Maestro Christophe Baron was born into an exceedingly long line of Champagne vignerons, with a history that dates back as far as 1677. He trained in Avize (Champagne) and Beaune before moving to the United States and founding one of North America’s iconic brands, Cayuse Vineyards. Baron’s estate in champagne includes 3 hectares (7.5 acres) surrounding the villages of Charly-sur-Marne, Crouttes-sur-Marne and the hamlet of Porteron, and its vineyard holdings are made up of only very old parcels of Pinot Meunier.

The wines are big and bold with serious weight and underlying finesse. Please don’t consume these in a champagne flute, as they really need a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc glass, or a Riedel tasting glass. They also need a lot of time when opened and I recommend letting them sit for least 30 minutes prior to consuming. Finally, make sure to not serve these wines cold. They are best served at 42-45 degrees — or warmer!

2018 was sunny and dry in champagne. Many people are thinking that this might be an exceptional vintage that produced a generous crop and a riper, fleshier style of wines. Compared to the 2017s, I think that these are a touch better overall, and more geared towards weight and flavor density instead of linearity. There is little doubt that the new 2018 CCB wines are generous and rich wines that have some seriously good aging potential. For my palate this is the finest overall lineup of CCB that I have tasted since its inception. Here are my reviews of the exceptional 2018 champagnes by Champagne Christophe Baron (mailing list only) and learn more at https://champagnechristophebaron.com/

2018 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Hauts Blanches Vignes’ Champagne- Seriously impressive in this warm vintage, the 2018 Champagne Christophe Baron which was planted back in 1969. This is an intense location with a southwestern exposure and a steep, 19 degree slope, the vineyard sits at 384 feet above sea level. On the nose there are toasty marzipan and nutmeg tones that combine with suggestions of cantaloupe and guava, giving this an exotic edge. The palate is deep and rich with a silky texture and very refined mousse upon entry. Finishing long with bright citrus fruits and copious minerals, this is a dashing, deep Champagne with loads of aging potential. Try to resist this beauty for at least another year. Drink 2024-2038- 97

2017 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Le Dessus Du Bois Marie’ Champagne- The 100% Pinot Meunier 2018 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Le Dessus Du Bois Marie’ Champagne shows off a beautiful honey color in the glass. Shades of salted oily Brazil nut, quince, nectarine skin and fresh guava all fill the nose. The palate is big and bold, showing off serious weight from the heat of the vintage.  However, this is very seamless champagne that shows both power and beautiful tension. The salty tones, viscosity and underlying finesse really make this check all the boxes. Just wait for the exceedingly long finish in this masterclass by Christophe Baron. Enjoy this beauty now but give it about 30 minutes in the decanter to take in the full flavor and aromatic range. Drink 2023-2039- 97

2018 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Alouettes’ Champagne- Even better than the 2017 bottling, the Brut Nature ‘Les Alouettes’ is less tightly wound than the 2017, showing a touch more flavor density and intensity. Intense ginger and white peach aromas combine with salted mixed nuts and a dusting of peat moss on the nose. The palate is plump and round, as the generous texture really entices. This has both the weight and bright acidity to cellar well for at least another fifteen years — and potentially more. I would consider giving this one more year of bottle time. Drink 2024-2039- 97

2018 Champagne Christophe Baron ‘Les Closeaux’ Champagne- This is a new wine to this portfolio, as the ‘Les Closeaux’ comes from a 1.49 acre parcel located in the town of Crouttes-sur-Marne. Vines from this site were first planted all the way back in 1925. Very dense like the other wines of this lineup, this offers concentrated gooseberry, pear, flint, lemon rind and starfruit flavors alongside pastry crust and cardamom notes on the palate. Full of tension, with serious weight, this beauty is just starting to hit its stride. Initially a bit reticent, give it 20-30 minutes in the decanter if consuming now to indulge in the full range of flavors. Drink 2023-2038- 96

Here are the beautiful new wines by Covale Cellars.

Covale Cellars

March 22, 2023

A winery focusing on the Quintessence Vineyard on Red Mountain, Covale Cellars is a brand new outpost founded by former Quilceda Creek assistant winemaker Marv Crum and his wife, Susan. Following a short retirement, Marv returned to winemaking back in 2017 after a close group of friends encouraged him to make a barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grapes were fermented in fruit bins, in their garage and then aged in new French Oak barrels. The resultant wine was extremely well-made considering the challenges of the 2020 vintage. Both of these wines are immediately gratifying and should be consumed over the next few years. They are rich, viscous wines that beautifully showcase this site on Red Mountain. Learn more at https://www.covalecellars.wine/ and here are my reviews of the new 2020 Covale Cellars wines.

2020 Covale Cellars Cabernet Franc- This outstanding Cabernet Franc comes from the Quintessence Vineyard on Red Mountain. The wine has only 3% Cabernet Sauvignon blended in, as it offers ripe black plum, cigar box, dark currants, creosote and creme de violette notes on the palate. This is very refined wine, with soft tannins, that is drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2020 Covale Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon- Coming from Red Mountain, the 2020 Covale Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon has 3% Cabernet Franc blended in. Inky in the glass, this unveils heady black cherry cordial, black licorice, tar and garrigue notes on the palate. The bright acidity and viscosity of the wine really drive this, as this is already beautifully evolved. Drink 2023-2027- 92
