Sitting on a call with Upsidedown Winemaker Seth Kitzke, we talked about the upcoming vintages. Seth was unabashedly bullish on the 2022 whites. “You get the fleshy aspects like 2021 but then you also get this stony character that is different” he said. Tasting through the wines I adored the wines texture. That is a hallmark from Kitzke who trained at K Vintners before starting his own project with his wife. “But I think that ’21 reds have great texture” he said. I totally agreed from what I have tried from the vintage thus far.

Upsidedown Wine has produced really great wine since its inception. KItze has a great palate and has tried the great wines of the world. Always attached to the Northern Rhone, he makes rich wines that utilize limited new oak and evoke beautiful nuance. The new wines I tasted came from the 2021 and 2022 vintages. I really loved the 2022 Upsidedown Wine ‘Konnowac Vineyard’ Viognier (OB, 94) which has amazing texture and flavor range, already picking up nutty tones. The best wine I tasted was the 2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Sage’s Wine’ Red Wine (OB, 95) which is named after the Kizkes’ daughter and is a barrel select wine that has some beautiful aging potential. 2022 Upsidedown Wine ‘Konnowac and WeatherEye Vineyard’ Roussanne- The dense and outstanding 2021 2022 Upsidedown Wine ‘Konnowac and WeatherEye Vineyard’ Roussanne is already drinking beautifully at the one year mark. Macadamia nut and kiwi mark the nose alongside rich honeydew melon and shades of baking spice laced pastry crust on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture and glorious sense of length. This is going to really impress you. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2022 Upsidedown Wine ‘Konnowac Vineyard’ Viognier- The 2022 Upsidedown Wine ‘Konnowac Vineyard’ Viognier is a native barrel fermented wine that is showing beautifully right now.  This has a touch of Marsanne and Roussanne added. Very soft and inviting on the mouth, this exudes class with its flavor complexity, displaying a ripe texture, and reveling in its poached pear, cantaloupe and starfruit flavors alongside hints of roasted pineapple and nutty accents on the palate. Drinking beautifully now, enjoy over the next eight years to come. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Birds + Flowers + Things’ Syrah- This 2021 Syrah was sourced from the high elevation Equus Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. This comes off very fresh and fragrant on the nose with red rose petals, cigar box, garrigue and smoky tones on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with a gorgeous sense of texture. Finishing long, this is killer stuff for the price. Drink 2023-2030- 92

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Dead Poplar Vineyard Gold Drop’ Mourvedre- Sourced from the ‘Dead Poplar Vineyard’ this saw roughly 40% whole cluster fermentation and was aged in some new 300L oak barrels before bottling. Right away this shows off mulberry and purple rose petal aromatics that collide with white pepper and bacon fat tones. The palate is soft and refined, showing beautiful savory and salty notes alongside venison, bulls blood, iodine, citrus rind and shades of pomegranate seed on the palate. Complex and delicious, the flavor range imparted here is seriously good. Enjoy now and over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Dead Poplar Vineyard Gold Drop’ Red Wine- The 2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Dead Poplar Vineyard Gold Drop’ Red Wine is mostly Mourvèdre (59%) with smaller parts Grenache and Syrah, with a dash of Roussanne. While obviously not Grenache dominant, you get this beautiful purity of red fruits from the Grenache alongside tobacco leaf, kumquat zest and shades of smoked pork shoulder. Savory and complex, with a luscious mouthfeel, enjoy now and over the next eight years to come. Drink 2023-2031- 94

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Sage’s Wine’ Red Wine- A GSM-inspired wine named after Seth and Audrey Kizke’s daughter who was born in 2021, the barrel-select and utterly gorgeous ‘Sage’s Wine’ has a splash of Viognier added in. Stored in roughly 60% new French oak, the wine comes off very elegant and well-balanced, as you can see each working part moving in unison together. Ripe red fruits and citrus rind accents connect well with smoked meats, and the salty/stony accents. Finishing long, this is drinking beautifully right now and will continue to impress for at least another ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 95

2021 Kitzke Sangiovese- This 100% Sangiovese wine comes from a site set on sandy loam, caliche, gravel and basalt soils. Stored in roughly al used oak, this shows off a smooth mouthfeel with layers of black tea, red currants and tobacco leaf with sage on the palate. Nicely textured, enjoy now and over the next ten years. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Kitzke Cabernet Franc- This outstanding 2021 Cabernet Franc opens with beautiful sagebrush and wet stone alongside menthol and cassis notes on the nose. Very soft and polished with a smooth texture, this is beautiful wine that shows good stony and salty accents alongside the core of milk chocolate and wild blackberry. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2020 Kitzke Cabernet Sauvignon- A really good wine made in a tough vintage, the 2020 Kitzke Cabernet Sauvignon offers bitter chocolate and allspice dusted black currant on the palate with wet stone accents on the palate. Drink now. Drink 2023-2027- 90

2021 Kitzke Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2021 Kitzke Cabernet Sauvignon is very youthful and fresh at this point. Blackberries and black currants alongside dark chocolate shavings all mingle well on the palate. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Equus’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2021 ‘Equus’ comes from a high elevation site that was formerly a horse farm. Stored in new oak, this comes off inky dark in the glass, this offers lovely garrigue notes on the nose alongside purple rose petals, mocha, tar and allspice. The palate is soft and refined with a great texture. Showing good length and weight, this is beautiful wine that is drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Equus’ Reserve Red Wine- The really good 2021 Upsidedown Wine ‘Equus’ Reserve Red Wine is a gorgeous blend that is already drinking beautifully. On the nose this takes on layers of sagebrush, creosote, dark currants and dark chocolate shavings. The palate is plush and refined with a great sense of weight and length. Drink 2023-2033- 94

For those who know me, I have a longstanding history visiting Argyle Winery. I was a massive fan of the wines made by Oregon bubbles master, Rollin Soles, who was making some of the most electric wines you would find on the west coast. Argyle continues to make some of the most consistently great Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and sparkling wines, being guided now by winemaker Nate Klostermann. Nate is a delight to taste wine with. I won’t soon forget the dosage trials that he guided us on roughly a year ago. One of the great makers of Oregon sparkling wines, Nate creates sparkling wines that show a refined mousse, with serious body and texture.

I was totally blown away with the new 2013 Argyle ‘Extended Tirage’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 96) which spent 10 years on the lees and is absolutely brimming with bright acidity and texture. 2013 was a tough vintage for red wines but the sparkling wines from this vintage continue to shine brightly. I adored the 2012 Argyle ‘Extended Tirage’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 95)  which has achieved greatness through this long aging process. 2018 Argyle ‘Spirit Hill Vineyard Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine- The 2018 ‘Spirit Hill Vineyard Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine is a dazzling wine made by Nate Klostermann. Once on the nose this takes on layers of brioche and baking spice dusted pear alongside shades of kiwi on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with a silky mousse. Rich and layered, this is a deeply concentrated sparkling wine that is best consumed at a warmer temperature. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2019 Argyle ‘Spirit Hill Vineyard Blanc de Noirs’ Sparkling Wine- The 2019 ‘Blanc de Noirs’ from the Spirt Hill Vineyard is a deeply concentrated sparkling wine from a cool vintage. This has 15% Pinot Meunier blended in. Rich and viscous, this displays rich Yakima cherry flavors that combine with shades of white peach, juicy pear and suggestions of walnut on the palate. This is refined bubbles that is drinking marvelously now at the near five year mark. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2013 Argyle ‘Extended Tirage’ Sparkling Wine- The 2013 ‘Extended Tirage’ was disgorged in July 2023. Given 3 G/L dosage, The wine was picked before the rains of the 2013 vintage. On the nose this shows baking spice dusted pastry crust, Pink Lady apple, and juicy peach notes with shades of diatomaceous earth. The mousse is super refined and elegant, as this glides throughout the drinking experience. 60% Pinot Noir with the remainder Chardonnay. This is ethereal stuff that is only starting to hit its stride. Drink 2023-2038- 96

2012 Argyle ‘Extended Tirage’ Sparkling Wine- The 2012 Argyle ‘Extended Tirage’ Sparkling Wine is a brilliant showing, as this is 40% Pinot Noir with the remainder Chardonnay. Mostly sourced from the Knudsen Vineyard, this offers rich red plum and saline drenched nectarine flavors alongside shades of oyster shell. This beauty is really singing right now. Drink 2023-2036- 95

2019 Saint-Julien Second Growth Retrospective

A famed location on the left bank of Bordeaux, Saint-Julien has 11 cru houses and neighbors Pauillac. Soils in this region are largely composed of a top layer of gravel on clay and limestone soil with large rocks. This location has the largest concentration of cru houses in the Medoc. You can see historical roots dating back to the 13th century with a Saint-Julien de Rintrac, potentially Saint-Julien’s earliest name. However, it was the 17th century that led to the first bourgeois and aristocrats, locals and Bordelais starting to understand this terroir.

I recently had the chance to revisit five wines from second growth houses in this region. 2019 was a vintage that is sandwiched between the magnificent 2018 vintage and stunning 2020 vintage. I think this will be an incredibly underrated year. The wines might possess the flavor density of 2018 but have incredible freshness and cellaring potential. That level of undying freshness reminds me a bit of 2005.

Out of the five houses that I tasted, it was a marvelous showing for the 2019 Leoville-Poyferre (OB, 97) which seems to just get better and better in the past decade. This house has been totally transformed with the management of Didier Cuvelier and a brand new facility built in 2014. Look for this house to continue to impress. I was blown away with the dense and heady 2019 Chateau Ducru-Beaucailou (OB, 98) which celebrates its 300th vintage with this wine — a masterclass that has so much cellaring potential. 2019 Chateau Gruaud Larose- The outstanding 2019 Chateau Guiraud Larose is a combination of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon with 25% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This was stored in 80% new French oak before bottling. Plenty of toasty oak combines with sweet black plum, rich boysenberry and shades of coffee grounds. The palate is super refined and medium to full-bodied with good richness and underlying tension. Drinking marvelously now, this has a long way to go in the cellar. Give this several hours in the decanter if enjoying now. Drink 2025-2044- 95

2019 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre- The 2019 Leoville-Poyferre combines 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot with the remainder Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Stored in 80% new French oak, this offers graphite and garrigue notes on the nose alongside dark currants and shades of tobacco leaf. The palate shows a seamless texture with beautiful concentration and shades of creme de violette with cassis cordial. Dense and heady, this is a blockbuster wine that will live on for many decades to come. Try to resist this beautiful wine for at least a few more years. Drink 2026-2055- 97

2019 Chateau Ducru-Beaucailou- The brilliant 2019 Chateau Ducru-Beaucailou 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder Merlot, the wine celebrates the 300th vintage of this wine. Inky dark in the glass, this offers black rose petals that combine with gravel, black cherry compote and shades of creme de cassis. The palate is seamless and seductive. Medium to full-bodied, this is a stunning wine displaying dizzying black and blue fruits with a light stony and salty character. World-class, try to save this beauty for another four years. Drink 2028-2055- 98

2019 Chateau Leoville-Barton- The 2019 Leoville-Barton combines 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder Merlot. Heady aromatics greet you with violets, pencil lead, white pepper and dense dark fruits. The palate is soft and refined with great balance. Medium-bodied dark cherry and boysenberry fruits greet you alongside wet stone and shades of espresso grounds. Already expressing itself nicely, enjoy this beauty over the next twenty plus years to come. Drink 2024-2044- 95

2019 Chateau Leoville Las-Cases- The stunning 2019 Las-Cases melds together 79% Cabernet Sauvignon with 11% Merlot and the remainder Cabernet Franc. Black rose petals combine with cassis, Turkish coffee and shades of graphite. The palate is extremely refined with silky tannins that frame a beautiful core of black and blue fruits with wet gravel and sweet pipe tobacco accents. Sturdy and massive, give this incredible wine another several years to go in the cellar. Drink 2028-2055- 98

Today it is my pleasure to share the wines of Buffalo Bills fan Brad Binko. Years ago he graduated from the Walla Walla Community College’s enology and viticulture program,  and for years ran restaurant wine programs in Charleston before making the move to Walla Walla. He is making one of the best Port-inspired wines of the Pacific Northwest.

The winery is a great destination with fun parties in the summer and he has a deft touch with his white wines. I love the new 2019 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Patience’ Roussanne (OB, 91) which shows a soft mouthfeel, with excellent range of flavors. Even better is the spectacular 2020 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Bliss’ Fortified Syrah (OB, 92) which is amongst the finest wines of its kind that you will taste in the state. 2022 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Lust’ Albarino- The 2022 ‘Eternal Lust’ does form the Otis Vineyard. This offers kiwi and green melon tones alongside a fantastic sense of verve, with copious minerals on the palate. Neatly textured, enjoy on a hot summer day. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2019 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Patience’ Roussanne- The 2019 ‘Eternal Patience’ also comes from the Otis Vineyard and saw extensive barrel age in mostly new French oak. Deeply colored in the glass, the Roussanne offers good richness with salted macadamia nut, honeydew melon, and allspice dusted pie crust. Medium to full-bodied, this is drinking beautifully now. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2018 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Divinity’ Cabernet Sauvignon- Coming from the Dionysus Vineyard in the Columbia Valley, this 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a limited production bottling that was made from two barrels. The nose is alluring with tobacco leaf and dark currants that mingle well with graphite and dark chocolate shaving notes. Medium-bodied, this is neatly structured stuff that is already drinking well. Drink 2023-2030- 91

2020 Eternal Wines ‘Eternal Bliss’ Dessert Wine- This fortified wine has been consistently one of the great Port inspired wines of Washington. This 2020 edition has a seamless texture, with a great sense of weight. Dark currant cordial and creme de violette flavors play well with shades of creosote and Black Forest cake on the palate. This is seriously good right now. Drink 2023-2030- 92

NV Red White & Buffalo ‘Lets Go Buffalo’ Red Wine- Made by Buffalo Bills superfan, Brad Binko, this is inky in the glass with medium-bodied black fruit flavors alongside tar and black tea, with chocolate undertones. Nicely structured, enjoy now. Drink 2023-2027- 89

Today we share one of the outstanding producers of Paso Robles. Winemaker Jordan Fiorentini crafts an incredible range of wines — including a world-class Zinfandel and Tempranillo. She has been at the helm for many years and has been producing beautifully consistent wines that show good depth, flavor range and fantastic underlying finesse.

Regardless of vintage these wines seem to shine even in tougher years like 2011. She makes beautiful Rose and whites. I love the new 2021 Epoch Viognier (OB, 94). This is silky and elegant wine that shows fantastic flavor range. 2021 Epoch Viognier- Coming from the York Mountain Vineyard, the 2021 Epoch Viognier comes off smooth and refined on the mouth. Sweetened gooseberry and starfruit flavors combine with copious minerals and stony accents on the palate. 2019 Epoch Grenache- The gorgeous 2019 Grenache by Epoch comes from the York Mountain Vineyard. Inky in the glass, you’d think this is Syrah rather than Grenache. Kirsch cordial, coffee grounds and red currant creme flavors all brilliantly combine with citrus rind and stony accents on the palate. Refined on the mouth, and very smooth, enjoy this beautiful wine over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2033- 94

2019 Epoch Tempranillo- A one of a kind wine, the 2019 Epoch Tempranillo comes from the Paderewski Vineyard. The wine is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano, 6% Syrah, and 3% Grenache, as this beauty was stored in 44% new French oak barrels for 30 months before bottling. It is jam-packed full of rich dark fruit flavors alongside Earl Grey tea, exotic spices and cloves. Full-bodied, with fantastic underling tension, this is drinking marvelously right now and will age gracefully over the next twelve plus years. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2019 Epoch Syrah- The 2019 Epoch Syrah is a generous, gorgeous showing from this vintage. Very dark in the glass, this comes off beautifully perfumed. Loganberry liquor, dark chocolate shavings and mocha tones mingle well with black rose petals on the nose. The palate is plush and refined with a seamless texture. Rich and layered, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2019 Epoch ‘Authenticity’ Syrah- The 100% varietal ‘Authenticity’ comes from mainly the Paderewski Vineyard in the Willow Creek District. Very deeply colored, this offers rich black and blue fruit flavors with Asian spices, pie crust and shades of creosote on the palate. The stony and salty accents really make this tick, as this finishes very long. Decadent and rich, enjoy this heady Syrah now and over the next twelve years. Drink 2023-2035- 95

2019 Epoch ‘Block B’ Syrah- The 2019 ‘Block B’ comes from an eastern facing site, Block 13, utilizing Syrah clone 174 vines. Extremely concentrated in its core, the wine shows off heady aromatics of beef drippings, graphite, black tea and huckleberry compote on the nose with black rose petals. The palate is soft and refined with a silky texture. Showing a great combination of weight and finesse, this is outstanding Syrah to consume now and over the next fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038- 96

2019 Epoch ‘Ingenuity’ Red Wine- Made mostly from Petite Sirah grapes, the heady and intense 2019 ‘Ingenuity’ is already drinking beautiful now at the four year mark. Coming from the Paderewski Vineyard, this beauty is extremely dark once in the glass, reveling in dark rose petal and violet notes alongside Turkish coffee and blueberry compote on the nose. Full-bodied and beautifully textured, this is seamless to consume now and will surely provide drinking enjoyment over the next ten plus years to come. Drink 2023-2035- 95

Here are the great new wines by C.L. Butaud.

Today we share one of the unique wine stories out of Texas. Houston native Randy Hester knew he wanted to make wine after working in the fine wines division of a major distributor. Hester discovered it was more than just sales for him – he wanted to be in a profession where he could create with his own hands and share the fruits of his labor to elevate the wine drinking experience. In order to gain the right education, training and experience to achieve their goal of making a difference in the Texas wine industry, the couple moved to California in 2006.

After moving to Napa, Hester began as a 36-year-old intern at Cakebread Cellars, eventually working full-time, and coupled his training with viticulture and enology courses at Napa Valley College on nights and weekends. Though his formal education was essential to his growth in winemaking, Hester credits his craft to the world class winemakers that he was fortunate enough to work with, including highly acclaimed winemakers such as Andy Erickson, Michel Rolland, Mike Hirby, and Helen Keplinger, at various distinguished producers including Colgin Cellars, Caldwell Vineyard, Realm Cellars, and Marciano Estate. The Hesters launched Lightning Wines in 2011 and focused on making Grenache and other Rhone varietals. As the final step to the 10-year plan, C.L. Butaud Wines was created in 2014 with a focus on creating high-quality wines that proudly utilize 100-percent Texas grown grapes. Their first Texas harvest took place in 2014 before the couple moved to Austin, Texas in 2017.

C.L. Butaud is an homage to Randy’s great grandfather, named Clet Louis Butaud, who was known as Frenchy. The new wines are a beautiful homage and are consistently very good. I particularly enjoyed the 2021 C.L. Butaud Tempranillo (OB, 91) which shows a beautiful texture and really nice flavor range. 2022 C.L. Butaud Wines ‘Blanc de Noir’ Rose- Made from Mourvèdre, this offers a soft mouthfeel with juicy melon and Yakima cherry notes alongside good tension on the palate. This is really good, nicely textured stuff. Drink 2023-2026- 90

2021 C.L. Butaid Mourvedre- The 2021 C.L. Butaid Mourvèdre is a really nice showing from this vintage. This is brimming with bright red fruit flavors alongside smoky accents and shades of citrus rind on the palate. Enjoy now and over the next few years. Drink 2023-2029- 90

2021 C.L. Butaud Tempranillo- This 2021 Tempranillo is neatly textured, displaying blood orange zest flavors alongside pulled pork, red currants and shades of white pepper on the palate. Enjoy now. Drink 2023-2029- 91

2023 Winery of the Year: Quilceda Creek

It is my great pleasure to reveal our Owen Bargreen 2023 Winery Of The Year. There were several challengers for the top position this year including HALL, Horsepower and Cayuse Vineyards. I would say that the decision this year was the most difficult out of any years to choose a winner.

The winner is Quilceda Creek, who produced three perfect wines in their 2021 vintage.Quilceda Creek is one of the premier producers for Cabernet in the world. First started by Alex Golitzin more than 20 years ago, Alex’s talented son, Paul, has assumed winemaking duties for many years now and is crafting arguably the finest new world Cabernet Sauvignon you will taste.

FIGGINS 'Figlia' Vertical Tasting

I think that I blushed a little when I heard about a new FIGGINS wine. ‘This one is going to be Merlot and Petit Verdot” said Chris Figgins. Named after his daughters, I remember being in awe and wondering what ‘Figlia’ might taste like. The FIGGINS ‘Figlia’ is unlike any other wine of its kind. Full-bodied and loaded with fruit and non-fruit flavors, this wine is totally stunning coming from the high elevation FIGGINS estate vineyard, in the foothills of the Bluewood Mountains.

In my opinion the idea behind this wine was to showcase truly how great Petit Verdot is from this site. The PV just needed a good companion to have it play with. Merlot is an interesting blending agent here because it definitely has its own personality from this site. It is also very bold but also smooth and does not typically take on the rich herbal character of the Petit Verdot. The Petit Verdot from this site is truly a monster with massive tannins and loads of blue fruit flavors (think huckleberry and blueberry). Each wine is stored in a small portion of new oak barrels, as this utilizes mostly neutral oak.

Tasting with Chris we were both amazed how these wines had held. For years I have loved this novel wine which is unlike anything made in Washington State. About a month ago I had the great opportunity to taste through every vintage of ‘Figlia’ starting with the incredible 2016 ‘Figlia’ (OB, 96) which was round and generous — quite frankly a joy to consume now. I was absolutely blown away with the 2018 ‘Figlia’ (OB, 97) which was a massive joyride of a wine, with a smooth texture and glorious flavor density. The new wine coming from the 2020 vintage (OB, 96) is already beautifully evolved, with herbal tones and rich dark fruits. The key to these wines is they typically need a few hours of air before consuming. Open one and watch it evolve over several hours. I think you are going to be really impressed.

2016 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- The 2016 ‘Figlia’ is a proprietary blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot. Stored in French oak for 22 months, this offers bright red cherry and black raspberry notes on the nose alongside coffee grounds and green herbs on the nose. The texture is insanely good with beautiful freshness and viscosity. Super juicy and offering loads of mouth-watering acidity, this is simply outstanding. 2017 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- Slightly more rustic than the 2016, the 2017 ‘Figlia’ is a fantastic showing. Stored in French oak for 22 months, this offers concentrated red fruit flavors with perfumed aromatics of rose petals and potpourri. Fresh and lively with vibrant acidity and a smooth mouthfeel, this is a stunning wine that has rich power and refined tannins, with great underlying finesse. Give this an hour in the decanter if savoring now. Drink 2023-2038- 96

2018 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- The 2018 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine is a magnificent wine that is made for aging. Loads of chocolate and tobacco greet you on the nose alongside roasted dates and shades of coffee grounds. A total head-turner on the palate, this is seamless throughout they drinking experience with massive black and blue fruits alongside the herbal and stony tones. Refined tannins frame this beautiful wine. Give this at least two hours if opening now. Drink 2023-2040- 97

2019 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- The elegant 2019 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine might not have the concentration of the ’18 but is drinking marvelously right now. A beautiful core of blackberry, tar and pipe tobacco greet you alongside chocolate and sagebrush notes. Very polished, this is great now but also has a long way to go in the cellar. Drink 2023-2038- 95

2020 Figgins ‘Figlia’ Red Wine- An incredible nose greets you in this fantastic 2020 bottling that is one of the outstanding wines of the vintage. Dried herbs, sous bois, and rich huckleberry fruits combine with mocha and tar notes. The palate is plush and refined with silky tannins that combine with the massive core of black and blue fruits. Sultry and rich, this is beautiful stuff to consume even now. Drink 2023-2043- 96

One of the electric houses in Saint-Emilion, Chateau Faugeres lies supervision of Pierre-Bernard and his wife Corinne Guisez, Château Faugères' wines reached a pinnacle of quality. This property and Peby Faugères were purchased by the business man Silvio Denz, who also owns Lalique. In 2011 a new winery was inaugurated, designed by the architect Mario Botta.

The wines from this house have been seriously good. I recently had the chance to taste the 2014 Chateau Faugeres (OB, 94) from my cellar. Ripe and beautifully textured, this beauty is really singing right now. It’ll continue to evolve for at least another fifteen years. 2014 Chateau Faugeres Saint-Emilion- This beautiful Saint-Emilion from 2014 combines mostly Merlot (85%) with the remainder Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is drinking marvelously now at nearly the ten year mark. Once on the nose this takes on layers of toasty oak with cassis, pencil lead and refined tannins that mingle well with a beautiful core of black fruits. Finishing very long, this plump and round bottling is already drinking right in its wheelhouse. Drink 2023-2038- 94

I fondly recall roughly fifteen years ago sitting at a table in Maui. I noticed that on the wine menu they had an Elk Cove Pinot Gris. It was very warm and this was going to absolutely hit the spot for me. I love visiting this winery with its scenic location perched high on a hill, with sweeping views of the Willamette Valley. An Oregon wine brand that has been synonymous with consistency, Elk Cove is a five generation family owned and run winery. Back in 1974 Elk Cove was founded after the Campbell family came across an overgrown homestead in the foothills of the Coast Range Mountains.

The five Campbell children helped work in the vineyards at Elk Cove as a family affair.  Adam Campbell took a special interest and stayed close to home for college, attending Lewis & Clark and spending summers on the bottling line. Upon graduation he joined the business year-round to learn the craft of winemaking from his parents. Adam is now responsible for making Elk Cove’s wines. He now oversees six vineyard sites with 380 planted acres. I loved the new wines across the board. The 2021 Elk Cove Pinot Blanc (OB, 92) is fresh and beautifully textured stuff that would pair with a literal cornucopia of foods. 2019 Elk Cove ‘La Boheme Brut Rose’ Sparkling Wine- The outstanding 2019 ‘La Boheme Brut Rose’ is entirely composed of Pinot Noir grapes from the La Boheme estate vineyard. This spent three years en tirage, as the wine opens with a lovely bouquet of red florals alongside cranberry and red cherry candy. Soft and refined, with salty accents, this is drinking beautifully and shows beautiful poise and weight from this slightly cooler vintage. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2022 Elk Cove Pinot Blanc- The 2022 Elk Cove Pinot Blanc comes from old vines that are up to nearly 30 years of age. This was stored in stainless steel before bottling. Once on the nose this takes on delicious kiwi and starfruit tones that mingle well with stony accents. The palate is soft and inviting with a smooth texture and generous melon fruit flavors. This is really good in its mineral-driven youth. Drink 2023-2027- 91

2021 Elk Cove ‘Mount Richmond’ Chardonnay- The 2021 ‘Mount Richmond’ comes from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA and comes from younger vines which are roughly six years old. Stored in oak puncheons and concrete eggs for 12 months, this delivers good richness and flavor density. Bright pear and honeydew melon flavors combine with stony minerals, vanilla cream and pie crust flavors. Nicely balanced, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next eight years. 2021 Elk Cove ‘Five Mountain’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Five Mountain’ was sourced from this sit-in  the Chehalem Mountains AVA which was purchased by Elk Cove in 2005. The wine is brimming with juicy red fruit flavors with kumquat zest, damp earth and salty accents on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, this is juicy, delicious Pinot Noir that has some really good aging potential. Drink 2023-2037- 94

2021 Elk Cove ‘Clay Court Pinot Noir- The outstanding 2021 ‘Clay Court’ Pinot Noir spent ten months in 20% new French oak prior to bottling and comes from this hillside site on Parrett Mountain. Sourced from Dijon clonal selections 115, 777 as well as Pommard clone Pinot Noir, this delivers a smooth mouthfeel on the approach with juicy guava, red currant, salmonberry and sous bois notes on the palate. Finishing long, this is a beautiful example of Oregon Pinot Noir from a warm vintage. Drink 2023-2037- 94

2021 Elk Cove ‘La Boheme’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 Elk Cove ‘La Boheme’ is a stunning wine made from Pommard clone Pinot Noir from their estate La Boheme Vineyard. Vines at this site are nearly 40 years old. This displays a sterling sense of tension in the mouth. Pretty guava and cran-pomegranate fruit flavors combine with salty soils, white truffle shavings and shades of orange zest. Full-bodied and delicious, watch this beautiful evolve over the next fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038- 94

Today we share one of the giants of Napa. Truly one of the great wines of this region, Lokoya began back in 1995 by Jackson Family Wines. The winery focuses on 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon wines from mountain appellations. This was the vision of founder, Jess Jackson who always saw the promise for world-class mountain fruit Napa wines. Fast forward to 2013, Jackson Family Wines purchased the former Yverdon Vineyard and Winery from Terra Valentine owners Angus and Margaret Wurtele. The winery became the new location for Lokoya.

Wines are made by Chris Carpenter, one of the regions great winemakers. The 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 99) is a sight to be seen. Inky in the glass, this offers incredible flavor range and intensity from this great vineyard. It is also a pretty penny at $500.00 retail. 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2019 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon is a total heavyhitter of a wine that is a must-taste for any serious Napa aficionado. Aged in a combination of Taransaud and Seguin-Moreau oak barrels, this gorgeous bottling from Mt. Veeder offers insanely good aromatics of iodine, dark currants, Black Forest Cake and suggestions of graphite on the nose. The palate offers a seamless texture and massive concentration. Full-bodied, yet showing a fantastic sense of freshness, this is loaded with massive dark fruits that parade with espresso grounds, creme de violette and dark chocolate shavings all in unison. While obviously big and intense, this is drinking beautifully despite its youth — and will easily be a 25-30 year wine. Drink 2024-2047- 99

It was back in 2011 that Marla and Geoff Bedrosian made the leap to follow their dreams and purchase a small Pinot Noir vineyard, in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley, named Vineyard eleven. The site is planted to a range of clonal selections including: Red Barn Block – Clones; UV Vosne-Romonée, Pommard and Swan in the Red Barn Block and Swan and Mount Eden in their Heritage Block. Their first harvest was completed in August 2017. They then followed by producing their first Rosé of Pinot Noir in April 2018 and later their first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2019.

This is now the second time that I have tasted these wines, the first being during my 2023 Sonoma Report back in March. I was really impressed with the wines that showed beautiful texture, weight and poise. The new wines I tasted come from the 2020 and 2021 vintages. They did a marvelous job mitigating the 2020 vintage, as I loved the 2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay (OB, 92) which was rich and viscous, coming off very clean. Even better is the 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay (OB, 93) which is more dense and shows some great aging potential. 2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- Coming from this esteemed site farmed by Kent Richie, this offers butterscotch and stony minerals on the nose with Meyer lemon zest. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture and great sense of verve. Full-bodied, and coming off very clean this is absolutely delicious stuff from a tough vintage. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Flora Marie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The Flora Marie Vineyard is a site located on a steep Ridgeline overlooking the Russian River. This is soft and approachable on the mouth, with layers of buttercream and poached pear alongside brioche notes. Drink now. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2020 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay- This Chardonnay comes from the Lone Oak Vineyard which utilizes 35 year old Wente clonal selection vines. Deeply colored, this is equally deeply concentrated, with ripe fig and Japanese pear flavors alongside shades of marzipan and nutty undercurrents. Really good now, enjoy over the next seven years to come. Drink 2023-2030- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- The 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Ritchie Vineyard’ Chardonnay is a knockout effort that is already beautifully evolved at the near three year mark. It is seamless throughout the drinking experience with layers of banana, toasty oak, vanilla cream and shades of hazelnut on the palate. Medium to full-bodied, enjoy this beautiful wine now and over the next eight years. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Flora Marie Vineyard’ Chardonnay- This outstanding bottling comes from the Flora Marie Vineyard which is a scenic site neighboring the Russian River. This wine utilizes Montrachet clonal selection Chardonnay, as the wine is soft and refined once on the mid-palate. Layers of buttercream and allspice dusted pie crust combine with banana and suggestions of mango on the palate. The weight of this wine is impressive. 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay- The 2021 ‘Next Door Neighbor’ Chardonnay is another beautiful 2021 bottling by Domaine de la Riviere. This is beautifully textured stuff as you can sense the battonage. Ripe pear and juicy melon flavors mingle well with the underlying verve and kumquat zest tones. This is concentrated stuff that maintains good balance. It is quite frankly a joy to drink right now. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Two Forces’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Two Forces’ Pinot Noir comes from two separate Russian River Valley sites that are blended together. Deeply perfumed on the bouquet, this shows impressive red currant and black tea aromatics alongside loamy soils and suggestions of tart cranberry. The palate is soft and refined with a great sense of texture, and plenty of salty, damp soil character. This medium-bodied and earthy Pinot Noir is drinking marvelously right now. 2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Red Bar Block’ Pinot Noir- The 2021 ‘Red Bar Block’ comes from their estate vineyard and is named after the red barn that overlooks this block. Dark in the glass, this offers black cherry and pomegranate seed flavors alongside plenty of wet stone and damp earthy character on the palate. Already nicely evolved, enjoy now and over the next ten years to come. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Middle Reach Vineyards’ Pinot Noir- The ‘Middle Reach Vineyards’ combines Pinot Noir from the El Diablo and their estate Vineyard eleven. This is wonderfully earthy stuff with cran-pomegranate and black truffle shavings alongside freshly tilled salty soils on the palate. Nicely textured and well-balanced, enjoy now and over the next decade. Drink 2023-2033- 92

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘Heritage Block’ Pinot Noir- This 2021 Pinot Noir comes from a 3 acre parcel in their estate Vineyard eleven. The site is on a rolling hillside that sees a great deal of morning fog. Fresh and viscous, this has really great richness and underlying tension. Loaded with black and red fruit flavors, with salty and Mandarin orange rind accents, this is beautiful, age-worthy Pinot Noir that is also really enjoyable in its youth. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Domaine de la Riviere ‘El Diablo Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The El Diablo Vineyard is located on a high ridge that overlooks the Russian River Valley. This 2021 Pinot Noir opens with a beautiful bouquet of red rose petals alongside Bing cherry, loganberry and stony accents. The palate is plush and soft, with bright, mouth-watering acidity and a core of rich red fruit flavors. Enjoyable now, savor this beautiful Pinot Noir over the next ten plus years. The 10 Best Wines I Tasted In 2023

There are arguably no better experience than sharing wines with friends and family. Now being out of the Pandemic, we are finally able to enjoy these special experiences together. It is my hope that 2023 has brought you wonderful prosperity and many memorable moments with sharing wine with your loved ones whenever possible. We wanted to share some of the incredible wines that I was able to taste throughout 2023. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday season making many more memories with special wines and cherished relationships. 

What were some of your favorite wines of 2023? Here are mine. 

11) 2014 Louis Roederer ‘Cristal’ Champagne

I love Cristal and had to include this as my #11. There is something magical about this wine that is made beautifully in even super challenging vintages like 2007 and 2013. I have had the chance to revisit the 2014 ‘Cristal’ many times this year. It is a scintillating bottling that I think I might have even underscored when first reviewed, because of how tight it was. Now after about 20 to 30 minutes of air it really comes together seamlessly. Gobs of stuffing, lemon oil and beautiful tension make this wine one of the finest champagnes you will taste in the world. Bravo!

10) 1982 Chateau Mouton-Rothchild

It was such a pleasure to revisit one of the great wines of 1982, the magnificent Chateau Mouton-Rothchild. A friend graciously opened this bottle that is now at perfect peak. The mushroom and black fruits were really rocking here, but the texture was downright ethereal. This held on strong for an hour. What an experience!

9) 2005 Chateau D’YQuem Sauternes-

I have long held these wines as arguably the finest made in the world. Many years back I purchased several .375L bottles of the 2005 D’Yqyem. This was a dream right now especially in the small format. Yet for some reason I feel like the freshness imparted makes me feel that this might not quite be at peak? It is close to peak nonetheless. The honey and marzipan notes really rock, as this does not come off as overly sweet at all — just impeccably balanced. It is downright impossible to find a dessert wine bottling that has this flavor range.

8) 2008 Piper Heidseick ‘Rare’ Champagne

I love wines from great vintages. This year I had several bottles of the 2008 Piper Heidseick ‘Rare’ Champagne. The first bottle I had was very lightly corked and never fully came together. However subsequent bottles provided me with data that this is one of the outstanding wines made this vintage. Scintillating, polished and full of life, this is a big, burly Champagne that is going to pair with an insane range of foods. But if you are like me, I just prefer to drink this on its own and watch it beautifully evolve. What a wine!

7) Laurent-Perrier ’26 ed. Grand Siècle’ Champagne

I know this is another champagne on the list but this ’26 ed.’ might be the finest ‘Grand Siecle’ ever made. As a context, for my birthday this year I tasted editions 23-25 of ‘Grand Siecle.’ The ’23 ed.’ is shining brightly, mostly comprised of 2006 wines that are quite fleshy and delicious now. The ’26 ed.’ also has that incredibly dense character but is also possessing racy acidity and a very lengthy finish. Having tried this now four times I highly recommend a 30 minute decant to fully take in the downright scintillating range of flavors and aromatics.

6) 2021 HALL ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 

The ‘Rainin’ is one of the finest wines made in Napa that is part of the HALL Platinum Collection. Made in very small volume, this beauty was a total head-turner that I won’t forget. Opulent and soft, yet extremely powerful, words made it difficult to define how good this wine really was. This was nothing short of perfection in the bottle. It doesn’t come cheap but this will be worth a visit someday.

5) 2000 Dom Perignon ‘P2’ Champagne

We were in Vegas and we thought that a top Champagne would do the trick. I went downstairs to Wallys and purchased a super expensive bottle of ‘P2’ to mark the occasion. The first bottle was corked and the manager working there was less than impressed that I had found the first one to be flawed. It was quite honestly a horrible buying experience. I tried to explain to her that I am a wine critic who does this for a living.

To her chagrin, she agreed to give me a second bottle to replace the corked one. The second bottle was a total world-beater. Filled with stuffing and beautiful racy acidity, this showcased the richness and tension that the vintage provided. What a wine!

4) 2004 Charles Heidseick ‘Blanc des Millénaires’ Champagne

It has now been many years since I have had the chance to try this wine, coming from the really good 2004 vintage. At now twenty years of age, it is right at its peak. Blanc des Millénaires 2007 is now the current vintage and this edition is considerably richer with more flavor range, as the nutty and earthy character of the wine was really showing beautifully. The best part was I shared this with one of my best friends.

3) 2015 Chateau Angelus

It was on a whim that we decided to open a beautiful bottle of 2015 Chateau Angelus. Tasted with friends, we waited about two hours and saw this beautifully evolve. Pillowy and soft, this is still really an infant but the potential! I think this will easily be a 30 year wine. Perfection in a bottle.

2) 2012 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Grenache

This was a buy that I purchased online and you never know what you are getting with these buys. However, this wine was shining brightly for quite some time. A literal cornucopia of flavor meets this beauty, as the texture and freshness was so beautifully intact. I love when you drink a wine right at its peak and this was it for me! If you can’t afford Chateau Rayas, buy this!

1) 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon

I feel so fortunate that I was able to taste this wine over multiple days. This beauty is going to really rock your world. I think that it is the finest ‘Columbia Valley’ Quilceda ever made. I love to drink top Washington young to get a feeling for their aging potential. For a future release 100 point wine, offers already unbelievably good tasting experience that you won’t forget. I just tasted this on its own without food but the beautiful chocolate and coffee ground notes make me think what a seamless match this would be with bitter chocolate.

Here is the stunning 2021 ‘The Funk’ Syrah by Saviah Cellars.

For years I have admired the wines by Saviah Cellars, run by two of the nicest people you will find in Washington wine. It is hard to believe that Saviah Cellars was founded all the way back in 2000, starting with only 300 cases produced. Today they particularly gain fame from their Syrah wines that are sourced from their two estate vineyards in the Walla Walla Rocks District. Saviah was started by winemaker Richard Funk and his wife, Anita, who are both natives of Montana who moved to Walla Walla in 1991 and later planted their first vineyard in 2001. Saviah is a family name from Anita’s great-grandmother, a schoolteacher, artist and author, who settled in western Montana in the early 1900s. 

I love spending time with Richard. He has such a vast knowledge for his land and the industry. He crafts truly outstanding wines that also age really well. He has two outstanding estate vineyards in The Rocks District, ‘The Stones Speak’ and ‘The Funk Estate.’  With a foundation  in microbiology, Richard previously worked as the Environmental Health Specialist with the Walla Walla County Health Department and is a self-taught winemaker. Richard has assisted several wineries with their start-up processes and served as the winemaker for Watermill Winery from 2006-2009, àMaurice winery from 2005-2006 and also has served as a consulting winemaker for several new wineries.

2021 Saviah ‘GSM’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘GSM’ offers heady aromatics of bulls blood, coffee grounds and red currants that parade with dried herbs. The palate is soft and rich with a smooth mouthfeel. 2021 Saviah ‘Une Vallee’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Une Vallee’ is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) with smaller parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the Walla Walla Valley. It is rich and mineral-laden, with good underling tension and refined tannins. Dark currants collide with coffee grounds, rabbit brush and shades of tar and black licorice on the palate. 2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2021 2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a beautiful new bottling that shows the heat of the vintage. Sourced from a host of great sites including the Pepper Bridge Vineyard, this offers beautiful structure and balance on the palate. Not overly big despite the heat of the vintage, you can see each wonderful working part here. Sagbrush and stony notes combine with tilled soils, cigar box, ripe blackberry and dark chocolate shaving flavors. This is drinking beautifully in its youth. Drink 2023-2033- 93

2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Syrah- For an entry level Syrah, the 2021 Saviah ‘Walla Walla Valley’ Syrah is a marvelous value. Aromatics of flint, iron and rich dark fruits all work seamlessly together on the nose. The palate is soft and round with great tension and flavor density. Layers of sandalwood mingle well with copious minerals, wild blackberry, black tea and exotic spices. Fresh and fragrant, this is already beautifully evolved stuff. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2021 Saviah ‘Reserve’ Syrah- Deep, concentrated and filled with stuffing, the 2021 ‘Reserve’ Syrah by Saviah is a gorgeous new bottling by Richard Funk. Deeply concentrated in the glass, this shows insanely good aromatic range from freshly picked red roses to potpourri, Asian spices, Umami, fresh sage and charcuterie notes alongside dense dark fruits.The palate is fresh and vibrant with great underlying tension and a smooth mouthfeel. 2021 Saviah ‘The Funk’ Syrah- The 2021 ‘The Funk’ Syrah comes from this site set on ancient cobblestones. The nose is really expressive even at the two year mark, as potpourri and bacon fat notes combine with violets, fresh mint and suggestions of smoked brisket. The palate is soft and inviting with a smooth texture and great sense of weight. A glorious core of dark fruits greets you (think figs, dates, blackberries) alongside worn leather, menthol, wet stone and suggestions of cardamom laced prosciutto with green olive accents. Complex and highly delicious, this is drinking marvelously already. Drink 2023-2035- 96

2020 Saviah ‘The Funk Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon- Really great considering the challenges of the vintage, the 2020 ‘The Funk Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon is shining brightly in its core of dark fruits with chocolate fudge and sagebrush with flinty accents. I want to extend my warmest holiday greetings from Owen Bargreen. We are very humbled by your support and following. 2023 has been an electric year of world-class wines, incredible wine events and gatherings. It is so wonderful to share wine with friends and family once again. Wineries are still coming out of the fog from the Pandemic. I pride myself to work hard in promoting the great wines that I taste across the world. It has been a wonderful experience writing hundreds of my own articles for OwenBargreen.com

We will work hard to push more events that highlight the best wines of these regions in the future. Our 2023 Top 100 includes including many highly collectable wines but also wines that embody good value. 2021 was very good to the wines of the Willamette Valley, as this year we see in our Top 100 a record number of Oregon wines. This year it was a very close call at the top. We have a new wine at our number 1 position for 2023. 1) 2021 Quilceda Creek ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2021 ‘Columbia Valley’ mainly comes from the Champoux Vineyard (90%) with the remainder coming from the Mach One Vineyard. A range of Cabernet Sauvignon clones are blended into this wine that spent 20 months in all new French oak before bottling. The aromatics really pop here with violets alongside potpourri and Turkish coffee, sandalwood, allspice dusted dates and shades of black licorice. The palate is generous, weightless and very generous as this is a total show stopper. Concentrated blue and black fruits with walnut, with creme de violette all brilliantly combine with the elegant mid-palate mouthfeel. Finishing extremely long, this is nothing short of perfection in a bottle. I don’t say this lightly but this is arguably the finest ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon that I have ever tasted. Give this three hours or more in the decanter if enjoying now. Drink 2024-2044- 100

2) 2021 Horsepower Vineyards ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache

Stony, salty and very savory, the stunning 2021 Horsepower Vineyards ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ Grenache is one of the great wines that I have tasted over the past year —and is nothing short of perfection in a bottle. Coming from this very tightly-spaced site set on cobblestones in Milton-Freewater, this nose can only be from one place in the world. Seaweed, wet gravel, anise, bacon fat and menthol notes all combine with pure pomegranate and red cherry fruits on the nose. The palate is extremely stony and salty, with loads of mouth-watering acidity. Finishing long, this memorable effort with serious nerve is already drinking beautifully now — but will cellar well over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 100

3) 2021 Kobayashi ‘Mizunera’ Cabernet Franc

This is now the second edition made of this wine following the incredible 2019 bottling. The 2021 ‘Mizunara’ is the only wine of its kind, as the barrel costs a whopping 8 thousand dollars including shipping. As one of the most expensive wines in Washington State, it is also one of the finest that you will find. Cedar and exotic spices combine in this downright explosive nose with red currants, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco and hints of fresh sage. Seamless and elegant, with serious savory notes, refined tannins and downright insane flavor range, you won’t find anything like this in the world. Try to procure a bottle if you can, as there are only 100 cases made. Drink 2023-2043- 100

4) 2020 Cayuse Vineyards ‘God Only Knows’ Red Wine

Translucent in its core, the Grenache-dominant 2020 ‘God Only Knows’ Red Wine has a small amount of Syrah blended in. Sourced from the Armada Vineyard which was first planted back in 2001, this was stored in neutral oak for 21 months and weighs in at a mere 13.7% alcohol. The palate is exceedingly fresh, showing a sterling veil of tension on the mouth. Very pretty guava and cran-cherry fruit flavors combine with Hoisin sauce, tobacco leaf, wet rock and charcuterie board, with blood orange zest accents. This is incredibly clean wine considering the conditions at harvest. Generous and done in a slightly richer style than the 2019, this beauty is best enjoyed now and over the next few years. 5) 2020 Force Majeure ‘Red Mountain’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Right now the wine is unbelievably good, with a brilliant combination of weight, texture and bright underlying acidity. 6) 2021 HALL ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2021 ‘Rainin Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from this small vineyard set on Diamond Mountain. This 8 acre site is set on iron rich volcanic soils on what was once a lush forest. Once on the nose this displays sweet pipe tobacco notes alongside espresso grounds, creme de violette and violets. Very inky and brooding in the glass, this takes on an opulent, pillowy texture once on the mouth that makes this truly a joy to drink. This powerful and dense yet very seamless throughout the drinking experience. 7) 2019 Devil Proof ‘Rockpile Ridge’ Malbec

This site is set at 1400 and is very windy which creates very think skins on the Malbec berries. The 2019 ‘Rockpile Ridge’ Malbec opens with intense black licorice, blackberry compote, and espresso ground aromas. The palate is wonderfully stony with insanely good tension and mouthfeel — and a finish that literally will not stop. This is opulent, incredibly textured Malbec that is truly one of a kind. 8) 2021 Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘Foothills Reserve’ Syrah

A total masterclass, the 2021 ‘Foothills Reserve’ is a barrel selection wine that comes from the Reynvaan’s high elevation estate Foothills In The Sun Vineyard. The site is set on Loess soils with deep basalt deposits and I have been writing about the potential of this site for more than a decade. Today, wines from this high-elevation location are every bit as good as those from their Rocks District vineyard. Hoisin sauce, beef drippings, menthol, and shades of wild blackberry all combine on the nose. The palate is utterly seamless with serious tension, weight and mouth-watering acidity. It offers La Landonne levels of flavor complexity, yielding blood orange zest notes alongside red cherry candy, cigar ash, wet stone and pipe tobacco that all brilliantly meld together on the palate. Once on the nose this takes on roasted date, huckleberry, red rose water, peat moss, and shades of blood orange zest. The palate is soft and round with serious power and weight. Finishing extremely long, with ripe black fruits, this is an absolutely stunning wine that is quite simply the finest wine from the Willamette Valley that I have tasted this past year. The beautiful 2021 ‘Espirit Blanc de Tablas, is another world-class release of this wine. This edition has considerably more Roussanne (70%) than the 2020 bottling. This varietal is really shining brightly here, with its hedonistic bent and plenty of body. Wet gravel notes combine with ripe cantaloupe, juicy peach and suggestions of salted Brazil nuts. 12) 2021 Delmas Syrah

The stunning 2021 Delmas ‘SJR Vineyard’ Syrah is another sensational effort from this famed outpost in the Walla Walla Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. Coming from this site that is set on large cobblestones. Umami, green olive tapenade and Hoisin sauce as well as Asian spices mark the nose alongside boysenberry and tar notes. This shows a fantastic underlying finesse with a silky smooth mouthfeel and loads of depth, concentration and mouth-watering acidity. Finishing extremely long, this just might be the best Delmas Syrah ever made. Drink 2023-2032- 97

13) 2016 Domaine Carneros ‘Le Reve’ Sparkling Wine

The outstanding 2016 Domaine Carneros ‘Le Reve Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine is another world-class release from this wine. This is deeply concentrated in the glass, showing white grapefruit blossom that combines with star jasmine, green apple and shades of crushed oyster shell. The palate offers racy acidity on the mouth with a beautiful, soft mousse and gobs of mouth-watering acidity. With more air the citrus oil flavors become more and more intense, alongside passion fruit and shades of white truffle, alongside nutty accents. 14) 2021 Rasa Vineyards ’Courageous Convictions’ Port Style Wine

Brothers Pinto and Billo Naravane are unabashedly infatuated with vintage Port and for years they wanted to make a Washington Port style wine using indigenous grapes. They now have met their match, as they utilize Touriga Nacional. Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cao and Souzao grapes that were sourced from the Yakima Valley. The nose is incredible expressive, showing Asian spices alongside sandalwood, huckleberry compote, Turkish coffee and suggestions of eucalyptus. The palate is soft and seamless with incredible verve, texture and weight. Milk chocolate, toffee, creme de violette, tar, anise flavors all collide, with nuances of damp soils, pencil lead and Mandarin orange peel. In terms of flavor complexity, this is pretty hard to top. Hedonistic, yet showing loads of mouth-watering acidity, this is 2021 actually considerably better than the 2020 version and retains its honor as the finest Port-style wine ever made in Washington State. 15) 2020 Leonetti Cellar ‘Serra Pedace Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Located in the SeVein project, the Serra Pedace is a southern Walla Walla Valley site that is set at roughly 1,200 feet. The nose is intense and hedonistic with black rose petals and dark currants that combine with black tea notes that all mingle in the glass. The palate is very deep and concentrated, with beautiful underlying finesse and a lengthy finish. Smooth tannins line the core of concentrated black fruits, as this beautiful wine will live on for at least another twenty years to come. 16) 2019 Sanguis ‘Loner The Golden Hour’ Chardonnay

Sourced from the John Sebastiano vineyard, the wine utilizes one Wente clone block at the top of the hill at one thousand feet, as well as a block utilizing clone 76. This was stored in neutral oak puncheons before bottling, as the wine shows some very good cellaring potential. The mesmerizing aromatics bring you back to the glass, arousing the senses with honeysuckle, white peach, wet stone, and Pazazz apple. The palate is very focused and concentrated with unbelievably good length. Wait for the minute long finish. Drink 2023-2032- 96

17) 2015 Roederer Estate ‘L’Ermitage’ Rose Sparkling Wine

Glowing and very pretty in pink, the stunning 2015 Roederer Estate ‘L’Ermitage’ Rose Sparkling Wine is beautiful evolved now at eight years of age. Made from a proprietary blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this shows good richness on the nose with sous bois, alongside Yakima cherry, white peach and shades of red raspberry. The palate is big, with serious weight and fantastic underlying poise. Ginger, guava, cran-pomegranate and shades of white truffle all beautifully meld together on the palate. The 2022 ‘Bob’s Ranch’ comes from this vineyard located in the Petaluma Gap, located just south of Sebastopol. An 88 acre site, mostly planted to Pinot Noir, this wine is a barrel selection from the best blocks in the vineyard. Bob’s Ranch Pinot Noir was first made with the 2014 vintage. The palate comes off super seamless and concentrated with serious flavor density, power and brilliant underlying finesse. A massive core of dark fruits greet you with freshly tilled soils, with underlying citrus zest accents. 28) 2021 Robert Biale ‘Varozza Vineyard’ Zinfandel

Always what I consider to be one of the great Zinfandel wines made in California, the 2021 Varozza Vineard comes from this location  in Saint Helena which was planted over a century ago. The wine takes on an incredible elegance and great underlying verve. Red cherry candy, pipe tobacco, and red plum flavors combine with salty soil accents on the palate. The 2016 ‘Puncheon’ is a single barrel bottling made from Robert Britain’s Estate Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. It is one of the great Pinot Noirs that I have tasted in the past year out of Oregon. The nose comes off sensationally well with red currants, tobacco leaf, freshly tilled rocky soils and shades of cardamom. The palate is silky and downright ethereal with serious length and a finish that just won’t quit. This wonderfully displays the rocky profile of this site, with salty undertones an an ebullient core of bright and tart red fruits. It comes  off very fresh and nicely textured from the less stirring as cantaloupe, bright pear and starfruit flavors collide with plenty of minerals on the palate. The outstanding 2019 Nine Hats ‘Columbia Valley’ Syrah comes off as a ‘Baby Sequel’ with its outstanding range of aromas and flavors. As is, the wine is exceedingly difficult to put down once opened with its dense figs, boysenberry and dark cherry notes alongside hints of dark chocolate. Enjoy now and over the next seven years. 72) 2021 Dutton-Goldfield ‘Stubbs Vineyard’ Pinot Noir

The Stubbs Vineyard was planted back in 1996 by Tom and Mary Stubbs. This site is set in the Petaluma Gap appellation and is a cooler site that is located at the bottom of a valley. The win3 was stored in 50% new French oak before bottling, and offers wet soil notes alongside dark cherry, plum and shades of baking spices on the nose. The palate is soft and refined with plenty of earthy and damp soil notes alongside a core of rich dark fruits and hints of cola. This is seriously good stuff in its heady youth. Drink 2023-2035- 95

73) 2019 Soter ‘Mineral Springs Vineyard’ Rose Sparkling Wine

The fabulous ‘Minerals Springs’ Brut Rose was disgorged in May 2023 and was given 4G/L dosarge. This spent three and a half years en tirage, as the wine is a blend of mostly Pinot Noir (81%) with the remainder Chardonnay. A gorgeous salmon hue, this offers plenty of stuffing with a refined mousse and loads of salted citrus fruit flavors alongside guava puree and bright red raspberry. Finishing long with copious minerals, this beautiful wine has a long life ahead of it. Drink 2023-2035- 94

75) 2019 Open Claim ’19's 25 Vintners Reserve’ Pinot Noir

The 2019 ’19’s 25’ is a single barrel wine made by Tony Rynders that comes from Block 6 in the Open Claim Vineyard. It smells incredibly perfumed once in the glass. Violet rose petals and potpourri notes combine with shades of dark chocolate covered red raspberry. This shows incredible texture and concentration with beautiful underlying verve. Cardamom and red cherry candy combine with shades of pomegranate seed, kumquat zest and wild mushroom on the palate. 76) 2019 Gramercy Cellars ‘Holy Roller Vineyard’ Syrah

This unbelievably good 2019 Syrah comes from the ‘Holly Roller Vineyard’ which was planted by Chris Figgins and is set on ancient cobblestones. Umami, bacon fat, menthol and charcuterie notes combine with shades of boysenberry on the nose. The palate is soft and seamless with a lovely mouthful, bright acidity and good sense of flavor density. A literal cornucopia of flavors greets you from spicy red peppercorns and allspice to dark currants, pipe tobacco, stony soils and soy sauce rubbed flank steak. This is an incredible wine that is already beautifully evolved so enjoy now and over the next five to seven years. Drink 2023-2030- 95

77) 2022 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc

The 2022 Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc has 2% Semillon blended in and comes from mainly vineyards in Napa County, with roughly 40% coming from Sonoma County sites. The nose is brilliant right now with pink grapefruit blossom, lime zest and salted cashew nut notes.The palate is fresh and viscous with a seamless texture and great sense of weight, as well as underlying tension. This is absolutely delicious stuff to consume now, as this 2022 bottling has some good aging potential as well.  Drink 2023-2031- 94

78) 2021 Hazelfern ‘Prime Cut’ Chardonnay

The deftly textured and still very nervy 2021 ‘Prime Cut’ is a stunning showing in this warm vintage. 79) 2019 Iron Horse ‘Wedding Cuvee’ Sparkling Wine

For years I have admired the ‘Wedding Cuvee’ which now has been made for several decades. This 2019 edition is mainly Pinot Noir (77%) with the reminder Chardonnay. It is filled with wonderful tension and salty undertones as ripe melon and citrus fruits collide with pastry crust notes on the palate. 80) 2021 St. Innocent ‘Freedom Hill Vineyard’ Pinot Blanc

For years Mark Vlossak of St. Innocent has been a statewide champion for Pinot Blanc. This edition is beautifully textured, with serious weight and tension. Layers of kiwi, peach and copious minerals greet you on the palate, with loads of lime zest and mouth-watering acidity, already displaying mushroom and Macadamia nut tones. 81) 2019 Sequitur ‘Ribbon Ridge Woodstock’ Pinot Noir

The downright stunning 2019 Sequitur ‘Ribbon Ridge’ Pinot Noir is a tribute wine to the 50th anniversary of the iconic music festival. This is a nod to the rains during the festival and also at harvest (albeit considerably cooler during the Oregon harvest!). Considering the rains at harvest, this is rich and concentrated, with a deep core. Very rich and concentrated, showing linzer torte, cran-pomegranate, wild blackberries and copious minerals, this is a stunning, very pure Pinot Noir from this slightly cooler vintage. Showing great length and loads of mouth-watering acidity, I can see this cellaring well for another fifteen plus years. Drink 2023-2038- 95

82) 2020 Andrew Januik ‘Stone Cairn’ Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2020 ‘Stone Cairn’ comes from Red Mountain as this is now the 10th edition of this wine. Inky dark in the glass, this unveils layers of cassis, creme de violette and scorched earth on the nose with sandalwood and pencil lead notes. The palate is concentrated and deep with refined tannins that frame a beautiful core of black and blue fruits with garrigue undercurrents. This is seriously good stuff to consume in its heady youth. 83) 2021 Holocene ‘Memoralis’ Pinot Noir

This comes from the Monk’s Gate Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, which is a small, 18 acre site set on Willakenzie soils. Coming from vines [planted back in the 1990s, this offers teaberry and ripe raspberry on the nose alongside shades of cardamom dusted hazelnut. This comes off rich and very polished on the mouth, with great weight and a deep concentration of red fruits. Enjoy this beauty now and over the next fifteen years. Drink 2023-2038- 95

The wine comes together pillowy and soft with a seamless texture and glorious sense of length. Bright black currants and blackberry tones combine with shades of creosote, garrigue and coffee grounds on the palate. Not overly rich, but very well-balanced, this walks the tightrope with copious red and black fruits, with peat moss and wild mushroom flavors already emerging. One of the great wines that I have tasted from Frank Family, the stunning 2019 ‘Patriarch’ was stored for 21 months in 75% new French oak barrels prior bottling. Very soft and approachable on the mouth, with refined tannins, this is silky, elegant and very rich Cabernet that is quite simply a joy to drink. Boysenberry preserves combine with espresso grounds, creme de violette, spice box and shades of black licorice all enter the fray on the palate. Ever since I first met him at EFESTE, I knew that Peter Devison was a special talent. Openly obsessive about making fine wine, Peter has tried the great wines of the world many times over. This helps him craft some of the finest you will taste in Washington state.

Having a great history in the Washington wine industry, having been head winemaker at EFESTE prior to moving to Walla Walla and eventually starting his own brand with his wife, Kelsey. They are great people to spend time with. Peter is also making wines for Goose Ridge.

Like last years releases, the wines I tasted from 2021 were absolutely outstanding. I tasted only his red wines but his whites have always been truly amazing. I absolutely love the 2021 Devison ‘Phantom Lamb’ Syrah (OB, 95) which is hedonistic and intense — definitely not for the weary. 2021 Devison ‘Above the Flood’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Above the Flood’ is mostly Grenache (65%) with smaller parts Syrah and a dash of Mourvèdre that all come from the Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. The aromatics are truly outstanding with Linzer torte and white peppercorns that combine with salty soils, dried herbs and shades of wild blackberry. The palate is soft and seamless with an incredible sense of weight and texture. Finishing very long this is already beautifully evolved stuff that will live on for at least another ten years. Chris Sherry crafts some beautiful sparkling wines for Elentone.

Today we explore a really electric sparkling wine house, Elentone, that is the brainchild of winemaker Chris Sherry. Sherry hails from Brighton in southern England, which is somewhat of a stone’s throw from England’s premier sparkling wine country. Sherry is an avid Brighton football supporter and shares the same passion for sparkling wines.

All of his wines are made in the traditional Champagne method and are given a limited dosage. I am really thrilled with the wines from Sherry that I have tasted in the past year. I have little doubt that they are going to get better and better. The 2019 Elentone ‘Noa Blanc de Blancs’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 93) shows amazing salty character with really good stuffing. 2019 Elentone ‘Brut’ Sparkling Wine- The 2019 ‘Brut’ is mostly Chardonnay coming from the Lake Chelan AVA. It was given zero dosage. You would not guess that based on the wine’s richness and texture. Baking spice laced pastry crust flavors mingle well with cashew nut and salty citrus fruits on the palate. Very refined, as this sat en tirage for three years, this is really at a good spot right now. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2020 Elentone ‘Willow Blanc de Noirs’ Sparkling Wine- A very pretty slightly pink hue, the 2020 Blanc de Noirs Sparkling Wine is brimming with richness from what was a really good vintage prior to the smoke event in September. This was picked before the smoke event and is a truly outstanding showing by winemaker Chris Sherry. Delicate red raspberry and teaberry notes combine with orange zest notes on the palate. Big, fleshy and rich, this is already drinking beautifully right now. Drink 2023-2031- 92

When I am tasting through the latest Avennia wines I typically post immediately on them because they are just so good. A premier producers of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals, Avennia is a joint venture between former Microsoft exec Marty Taucher and winemaker Chris Peterson. These wines are incredibly consistent and extremely well-made.

Former DeLille Cellars Winemaker Chris Peterson crafts some beautiful, concentrated and well-structured wines for Avennia. I think he did an amazing job with his 2020 wines where many other producers did not fare as well. I love the new 2021 Avennia ‘Gravura’ Red Wine (OB, 93) which will only get better with time and shows lovely texture and weight from this warm vintage. 2021 Lydian ‘GSM’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘GSM’ shows beautiful smoky and savory notes on the nose with bright red fruits. The palate is soft and inviting with a smooth texture. Drink 2023-2027- 91

2021 Lydian Cabernet Sauvignon- The outstanding Lydian Cabernet Sauvignon showcases this warm vintage. It shows good ripeness and density from this vintage with a soft mouthfeel. Black currants and tobacco leaf combine with milk chocolate notes on the palate. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2021 Avennia ‘Gravura’ Red Wine- A killer wine from a great vintage, the 2021 ‘Gravura’ is mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (46%) and Merlot (42%) with the remainder Cabernet Franc. It is rich and bold with a smooth mouthfeel that is really inviting. Cassis and sagebrush flavors line the palate, alongside coffee grounds and dark chocolate shavings. 2021 Avennia ‘Champoux Vineyard’ Cabernet Franc- This fantastic 2021 Cabernet Franc comes from the famed Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. An inky tone in the glass, this offers violets and dark currants on the nose alongside sandalwood and espresso ground notes. The palate is plush and refined with a silky texture with fantastic concentration, verve and balance. This is up there with the finest Cabernet Franc you willl taste in Washington. Drink 2023-2038- 96

Today we share another exciting new winery from the Pacific Northwest. Approachment was started by Jessica and Paden West who both have many years of industry experience. Jessica started her wine path working in wine shops and tasting rooms. After learning the sales portion of the business, Jessica acquired an internship in 2013 at Bethel Heights Vineyard working directly with Winemaker Ben Casteel and viticulture master Mimi Casteel. Entranced by the crafting side of the business, Jessica then entered the NW Wine Studies program to earn her degree in Winemaking. Paden grew up in the Willamette Valley and began his path in wine just as Jessica did -by working in wine shops and tasting rooms. In 2010, Paden was offered an internship at Penner-Ash, managed by Winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash and Assistant Winemaker Brian Irvine. After finding his fire for the winemaking side of the business, Paden also enrolled in the NW Wine Studies program…where his lab partner turned out to be Jessica West. The rest has been history.

2022 Approachment ‘Point of Contact’ Pinot Gris- The 2022 ‘Point of Contact’ is a skin-contact Pinot Gris wine that shows a smooth mouthfeel and neat texture once on the palate. Flavors of red raspberry and pear combine with shades of guava on the palate. Fresh and vibrant, this is really well-done. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Approachment Gamay- The 2022 Approachment Gamay is very fresh with red rose petals and tilled soils on the nose alongside pretty red fruits. Light to medium-bodied, with a dazzling sense of tension, and fantastic mouthfeel, this is going to really impress you. Serve slightly chilled on the Thanksgiving table. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2022 Approachment Grenache- Coming from the Columbia Valley, this 2022 Grenache shows off a soft mouthfeel. Juicy red fruits follow with shades of sage and citrus rind notes. Drink 2023-2029- 91

Today we share one of the electric new wineries of Oregon. The brainchild of Bree and Chad Stock Constant Crush Wine relies on their more than 30 years of industry experience. Constant Crush is a winery on the rise, and I can’t wait to see what is next from them having tried their incredible range of new wines.

It was almost a decade ago that I met Oregon wine board member Bree Stock, MW. Australian-born, her wine career began in the Canadian on-trade with Sommelier buying roles on both coasts. On return to Australia she developed broad industry experience in management and sales director roles in on-trade, distribution and importing specializing in wines of the Iberian Peninsular, US and Australia. Stock is a joy to talk wine with. Funny, witty and possessing an incredible palate, I quite honestly had no idea that she was making wine until I tried her Artist Block wines. This was the first time that I tasted any of her wines and I was quite frankly floored by what was in the bottle. I am so eager to see where her winemaking career takes her. The new wines I tasted were beautiful across the board. Anyone who knows me understands that I am not a big fan of the Pet Nats available on the Northwest wine scene — with very few exceptions. Her 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Mencia Pet Nat (OB, 92) rivals anything that you will taste like this in the Pacific Northwest with its incredible flavor range and nuances. 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Mencia Pet Nat- This is a first for me to see the noble grape of Bierzo, Mencia, grown in the Willamette Valley. This comes off extremely well-balanced, with plenty of nuance. Blood orange zest and cranberry flavors combine with salty soils, Pazzaz apple and guava juice accents on the palate. Refined and seriously delicious, this is not your typical Oregon Pet Nat and is one to buy by the case. Drink 2023-2028- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Sauvignon Blanc- This 2022 Sauvignon Blanc saw some barrel age, coming from the Eola Springs Vineyard. Clowdy in the glass, this is filled with tension and sourdough bread notes on the palate, with salted macadamia nut and shades of Yakima cherry all coming together nicely. This is viscous and rich wine that is already nicely evolved. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Arneis- This unique bottling offers both excellent texture and finesse once on the mouth. Layers of honeysuckle and cardamom drenched pear combine with honeydew melon and stony accents on the palate. Delicious now, this will show well for another six plus years to come. Drink 2023-2029- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Chenin Blanc- Smooth, silky and very elegant, the 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Chenin Blanc is another seriously good new release from this new Oregon house. Once on the nose this takes on beeswax notes alongside cardamom and shades of cashew nut. The palate is rich and viscous with a dense mouthfeel. This is going to just get better with age, developing more nutty and earthy tones as it cellars. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gruner Veltliner- The fantastic 2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gruner Veltliner might have just a dusting of Nikolaihof in her.  Once on the nose this takes on green bell pepper and dried sage notes alongside ripe orchard fruits, with baking spice accents. The palate is plush and soft with an inviting texture and good sense of weight and length. Fabulous to consume now, this will continue to evolve well for another eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Red Wine- The 2021 ‘Limited Addition’ combines Blaufrankish (80%) with smaller parts St. Laurent and Gruner Veltliner. The color is very concentrated, as is the deep fruit flavors on the palate. Violets, allspice dusted blackberries and shades of orange rind all collect momentum on the palate. This is seriously good, showing great flavor density, as this highly novel wine will cellar well over the next eight years to come. Drink 2023-2031- 93

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Red Wine- This 2021 bottling combines Trousseau, Gamay and Pinot Noir in near equal parts. It is marvelously earthy with a smooth texture. Underbrush and black truffle crudo combine with kumquat zest, pretty red fruits and shades of cigar ash on the palate. This is gonna be loved by Oregon wine geeks. Drink 2023-2031- 91

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gamay- This 2021 Gamay comes off very fresh and nicely textured with delicate red fruits that parade with Mandarin orange rind, and flinty/salty undercurrents on the palate. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Gamay- Just as fresh and vibrant as the 2021 Gamay, this 2022 offers plenty of mouth-watering acidity and finesse with very pretty and tart red fruit flavors that mingle well with orange zest, and wet stone accents. Enjoy now. Drink 2023-2028- 91

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition Pinot Gris/Pinot Noir’ Red Wine- Equal parts Gris and Noir, this highly unusual yet sensual 2022 bottling offers lovely high-tones from the Gris with citrus blossom water, and guava fruit flavors that combine with suggestions of volcanic earth on the palate. Stony and savory, with plenty of lip-smacking acidity, this is a total winner. Drink 2023-2029- 92

2021 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Cabernet Franc- One of the best Cabernet Franc bottlings I have had from Oregon, this beautiful 2021 opens with violets, sage and wild blackberry notes on the nose. The palate is fresh and nicely balanced with a smooth texture. Rich and polished, with plenty of mouth-watering acidity, this will continue to evolve over the next eight plus years. Drink 2023-2031- 92

2022 Chehalem Mountain Vineyard ‘Limited Addition’ Cabernet Franc/Field Blend Red Wine- Soft and approachable once on the mouth, this 2022 offers a smooth texture and is loaded with bright black and red fruit flavors, with tobacco leaf and stony accents. Drink 2023-2031- 91
