Massican has an electric new lineup of white wines.

Massican

July 7, 2025

An electric brand out of Napa, Massican began back in 2009. The brand is the brainchild of innovator and winemaker Dan Petroski, who sought to make old-world inspired white wines in the Napa Valley where Cabernet is unabashedly king. These wines continue to be affordably priced, where entry level Chardonnays in Napa command 100 dollars and sometimes more. For years Dan made world-class wines at Larkmead which rivaled some of the finest wines of the region — at a fraction of the price of cult competitors.

These wines have been impressive regardless of vintage. It is no surprise that Dan sold his winery to Gallo in September 2023. This is going to be an electric brand for them. Look to the gorgeous 2024 Massican ‘Gemina’ White Wine (OB,95) which is a stunning combination of indigenous Italian varietals, mainly Greco. This is a truly unique, world-class wine. Learn more about these novel, one of a kind wines at massican.com Here are my reviews of the gorgeous new Massican wines.

2023 Massican Sauvignon Blanc- The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from locations in Sonoma and Napa. It delivers lemon oil and peach pit flavors that collide with copious minerals and shades of cantaloupe on the palate. The combination of minerality and concentration here really shines through. 2024 Massican ‘Gemina’ White Wine- The 2024 ‘Gemina’ is a unique blend of mainly Greco and Falanghina with a touch of Fiano. The name is inspired by an ancient varietal that dates back to the first century AD, called Aminea Gemina. Gorgeous now, with serious weight and tension, alongside salty nuances, enjoy over the next eight to ten years. Drink 2025-2033- 95

2024 Massican ‘Annia’ White WIne- The 2023 ‘Annia’ is mainly comprised of Tocai Friulano (35%", Ribolla Gialla (42%), with Chardonnay (17%) and the remainder Pinot Grigio. This is lively with bright acidity and a silky mouthfeel. Salty and savory on the mouth, the freshness brings you back to the glass for more enjoyment. Green apple and pear flavors mingle well with nutty nuances and sea salt dusted pastry on the palate. Drink 2025-2031- 93

2024 Massican ‘Hyde’ Chardonnay- The 2024 ‘Hyde’ Chardonnay comes from plantings that date all the way back to1979. Saline-drenched pear and peaches combine with macadamia nut and mango accents. Today we share a stalwart producer in the Lake Chelan AVA. I’ll fully admit that it has been many years since I have tasted the lineup at Tsillan Cellars. 2018 was a knockout vintage and Oregon. Enclosed is my 2018 Oregon Retrospective.

2018 Oregon Retrospective

June 30, 2025

I have little doubt that 2018 will go down as one of the greats in Oregon. I don’t recall a vintage where so many outstanding Pinots and Chards were made across the board. Sure, there was amazing consistency in 2012, but my feeling is the ’18 Pinots eclipse what ’12 offers in terms of flavor density and aging potential. 2008 was also a knockout vintage that had many wines that will surely eclipse the 20 year mark. However, ’08 had more outliers for my palate and the Chardonnays made then are nowhere near as polished as those a decade later.

Big Table Farm winemaker Brian Marcy was extremely fond of the warmth of the 2018 vintage, mentioning that this was a relatively easy vintage for him from start to finish. The wines from Big Table Farm are world-class even at the entry level with their ’18 ‘Willamette Valley’ Pinot Noir (OB, 93) offering some seriously good QPR at under 50 bucks.

Tony Rynders of Tendril and Open Claim fame described the ’18 vintage as “extraordinary” and explained that “2018 wines possess that rare combination of both power and finesse. They have lovely concentration while maintaining layers of complexity” Rynders made one of the finest Chardonnays of my tasting, his 2018 Tendril ‘XL’ (OB, 96) which was dense and intense, with serious flavor density and a weightless texture. Bergstrom’s ‘Sigrid’ has become a cult Chardonnay and the 2018 ‘Sigrid’ (OB, 97) was a dazzling bottling that has everything you want in a world-class Oregon Chard.

Lingua Franca produced some of the finest wines of my tasting. Winemaker Thomas Savre was also a fan of his 2018s and the vintage overall. He explained “2018 in Eola Amity Hills a vintage that came with a level of intensity and power I had never experienced. The wines were generous, complex, and rich. With time and age, the shape of the wines became subtle, fresh and delicious.” Savre’s 2018 ‘The Plow’ Pinot Noir (OB, 96) was a dense and polished treat, with serious flavor density and verve. This could easily be a 20 year wine! I loved the stony terroir that shone in the Brittan wines. Robert Brittan’s 2018 ‘Cygnus Block’ (OB, 96) shows serious stony terroir alongside a glorious core of dense fruits and earthy nuance.

It is no surprise that 2018 wines by Domaine Drouhin and Domaine Serene produced heavyhitters in their ‘18 Domaine Drouhin ‘Laurene’ Pinot Noir (OB, 97), the ‘18 Domane Serene ‘Aspect Pinot Noir (OB, 97) were knockout bottlings that are still quite primary. James Frey of Trisateum made some otherworldly Pinots including his 2018 Trisaetum ‘Family Reserve’ Pinot Noir (OB, 96) is a barrel select Pinot Noir that is the finest wine I think I have tasted from this estate. Finally on a high note, the singlular, 2018 ‘Jack’ (OB, 97) by Sequitur is pure Ribbon Ridge with gobs of tension and dense red and dark fruits. It is a mind-bending journey through 2018 Oregon Pinot Noir.

The 2018 Oregon Pinot Noirs are really starting to hit their stride, as in many cases less defined tertiary notes are settling into the deep core of red and dark fruits. For those who have these beautiful wines in their cellars, do not be afraid to open these glorious Pinot Noir wines. Here are the top wines from my 2018 Oregon Pinot Noir Retrospective.

Here is the gorgeous new ‘21 Cabernet Sauvignon release by Dunham Cellars.

Dunham Cellars

June 30, 2025

I want to congratulate Dunham Cellars on an amazing 30 years in the Washington wine industry. Last weekend they celebrated their 30th anniversary and I was so sad to not be able to attend, as I had family in town. Dunham is one of the first wineries I ever visited back in the 2000s. This location was a seminal wine memory I have tasting with my father and trying the consistently great lineup. Founded by the Dunham family in 1995 these are wines that tend to completely over-deliver for the price. They have a range of wines starting with their entry level ‘Three Legged Red’ up to their top Artist Series wines that are truly beautiful.

Rob Campisi stands at the helm and was formerly assistant winemaker at Dunham. Rob trained under eminent Washington winemaker, Dan Wampfler who is now at Abeja. He did another amazing job with his Cabernet. The 2021 Dunham Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 94) is a gorgeous effort that is slightly tannic now and needs a bit of air. It is a beautiful, dense and well-structured effort that will live on for decades. Learn more about these beautiful wines at dunhamcellars.com Here are the great new wines by Dunham Cellars.

2024 Dunham Cellars Sauvignon Blanc- The 2024 Dunham Cellars Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from the McNary and Gamache vineyards. Peach, kiwi and passion fruit flavors mingle well with flinty undertones and a smooth texture on the palate. This is seriously good stuff with awesome weight and underlying finesse. Sourced from the Kenny Hill and Lewis Vineyards, this is dense and delicious on the mouth, with bright acidity. This is elegant throughout the drinking experience, with nutty and earthy tones giving it a very Washington meets Montrachet feel. Drink 2025-2033- 93

2023 Dunham Cellars ‘Three Legged Red’ Red Wine- A juicy and delicious 2023 bottling for 20 bucks, the 2023 ‘Three Legged Red’ offers candied red fruits that mingle well with sweet pipe tobacco and black licorice notes. Drink 2025-2030- 90

2021 Dunham Cellars ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The outstanding 2021 ‘Columbia Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon was stored in 40% new French oak before bottling. This needs about 30 minutes of air for tannins to soften. Kirsch and sagebrush notes collide with espresso bean and shades of dark chocolate shavings on the palate. The combination of weight and finesse here makes this impeccably balanced. This is easily going to go for another fifteen years. Drink 2025-2040- 94

Here is the outstanding new 2023 Pinterre release by Dossier.

Dossier

June 26, 2025

Today we share one of the electric wine brands of the Pacific Northwest. Dossier began with a partnership between former NFL star Sidney Rice and businessman and fellow Whitman grad Tim Lenihan. For years I have admired the wines made by master of wine, Billo Naravane, who over the years has become one of Washington’s great winemakers. Naravane makes the beautiful wines of Rasa Vineyards. He has a trademark texture to his wines as these are elixirs that embody flavor density and weight, without coming off as cloying or heavy. Longtime Washington wine industry veteran Brandon Kubrock serves as general manager, formerly owning his own Ardor Cellars label. Kubrock has been in this field for more than 20 years.

I am so impressed with the new lineup of wines, which includes the new Oregon Pinot Noir. Once again, they have crafted one of the best Rose wines in the Pacific Northwest. I adore the 2024 Dossier Rose (OB, 94) which has serious tension, texture and flavor range. Don’t miss out on the 2023 Dossier ‘Columbia Valley’ Syrah (OB, 96) which is somehow even better than the last scintillating bottling. This has a small amount of fruit from the Rocks District which adds stony and briny nuance to the wine. It is a must-purchase for any Syrah lover. These wines have just been released and I will taste the ‘Halo’ series later this year. Learn more about this exciting new project at dossierwine.com and here are my reviews of the new Dossier wines.

2024 Dossier Rose- This beautiful 2023 Syrah Rose bottling was sourced from the Columbia Valley. Stored in 12% new French oak barrels with the reminder mostly concrete and some neutral oak barrels, this opens with gorgeous red florals alongside dense melon and strawberry fruit aromatics. The palate is insanely good with serious texture and pure melon and pretty red fruits. Dense, round and mineral-laden on the tongue, with a great sense of tension and salty nuance, this is a total stunner. This is up there with the finest Rose wines in North America. Drink 2025-2034- 94

2023 Dossier Viognier- The gorgeous 2023 Dossier Viognier is a complex and delicious rendition of this wine coming from several sites in the Columbia Valley. Coming from the Connor Lee, Stoneridge, StoneTree and Sagemoor Vineyards, this was stored in 40% new French oak before bottling. This is oily and unctuous on the palate, with serious depth, flavor density and weight. While obviously big and rich, the underlying tension and salty tones really add to the enjoyment. Star jasmine water and rich starfruit and kiwi flavors mingle well with honeydew melon and shortbread notes all parade on the palate. Not for the weary, enjoy this stunning wine now and over the next eight plus years. Drink 2025-2033- 95

2023 Pinterre ‘Rice Lane Vineyard’ Pinot Noir- The 2023 Pinterre ‘Rice Lane Vineyard’ Pinot Noir comes from the 'Rice Lane Vineyard’ which is not a vineyard that they could name, located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA. This saw 25% whole cluster fermentation and was stored in largely new (60%) oak barrels before bottling. Beautiful red florals collide with damp soils, black truffle shavings and juicy cranberry notes collide on the nose. The palate shows beautiful weight and salty nuance from these marine sedimentary soils. Big, juicy and delicious, enjoy now and over the next ten to fifteen years. Drink 2025-2038- 94

2023 Dossier Syrah- The outrageously good 2023 Dossier Syrah is another sensational edition of this wine. This wine was sourced from a range of sites including 25% fruit from the Rocks District and some from the Connor Lee Vineyard. This stands jet black in the glass, as this is dense and burly stuff with good nuance, opening with bulls blood and Marionberry compote alongside tar, tobacco leaf and shades of black licorice. The palate is very fresh and complex, with creme de violette, anise and sweet pipe tobacco with smoked meats and shades of blueberry compote. This is highly complex, novel and beautifully-textured stuff that has a long life ahead of it. Drink 2025-2039- 96

Matthews

June 25, 2025

Today we share the electric new wines of Matthews. It has been over 20 years since I first sipped my first Matthews wine. Januik and Novelty Hill

June 25, 2025

One of the great stops in Woodinville, Januik and Novelty Hill is a must-visit or any lover of Washington wine. For many years Andrew trained under his father, Washington wine icon Mike Januik, who was formerly head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle and Col Solare before starting his own winery. Mike is a master of crafting great wines from literally any varietal. For years I have admired his Chardonnay wines that show insanely good aging potential — even from hot sites like the Cold Creek Vineyard. These guys are also crafting some of the greatest values wines in the state.

My wife and I love visiting this gorgeous facility in Woodinville. Food quality is great here, as is the service. It is hard to find a better spot in Western Washington to enjoy wine outdoors on a bright, summer day. Andrew Januik

June 25, 2025

What a pleasure it is to share the new Andrew Januik wines. The son of eminent winemaker Mike Januik, Andrew Januik has now been making wine for over a decade. He studied under his father after studying at University of Washington and creates a dense and rich style for his own label, from warmer locations in Washington. I have been really impressed with his namesake project.

Tasting with Andrew, he was very excited to present wines from 2022 which had a later harvest and was slightly cooler. I love the new 2022 Andrew Januik ‘Lady Hawk’ Cabernet Sauvignon (OB, 94) which has terrific depth and concentration, with good structure. Beautiful photo of the Pinstripe Wines founders, Jeri (L) and Amy (R) Andrews.

Pinstripe Wines

June 23, 2025

Today we share an electric new brand in Pacific Northwest wine. Pinstripe Wines follows an emotional tale of perseverance. It is named after co-founder Amy Andrews’s uncle, an artist, who was diagnosed with AIDS in the beginning of the crisis and he used blood lines to make his art. His partner was a doctor and he had to give blood regularly. He would come home and over his art he put his bloodlines across each piece of his art. He did that to show how his life was affected by diseases and facing death — going through a hard time. It was obvious that this became a pinstriped type of art. The mark in the back of the bottle is influenced by a piece of his art. Pinstripe is a 100% women-owned, LGBTQ-owned brand.

It is quite remarkable that founders Amy and Jeri Andrews donate 100% of the proceeds to the Seattle Children’s Hospital Uncompensated Care Fund. Amy explained why she and Jeri do this, noting “illness in a child is unfathomable and we felt that the story ties in well, using the artistry that he created and using it forward into today.” One of the wines is named ‘never give up’ in French which is named after her uncle who put signs of ‘never give up’ under each hospital door.

The wines are made by Kate Payne Brown, eminent Oregon winemaker who is now at the helm at Argyle. The wines are geeky and highly nuanced, with a limited amount of dosage. I love the new 2023 Pinstripe ‘Pour Toujours et a Jamais’ Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine (OB, 93) which is beautifully astringent with great citrus and green apple fruit flavors. Here is the dazzling 2021 ‘Saggi’ by Long Shadows.

Long Shadows 'Saggi' Red Wine

June 19, 2025

Today we share one of the iconic wines of Washington. The Saggi is a brilliant blend of largely Sangiovese. It is truly one of the great, novel wines of this state. Last year I had the tremendous opportunity to taste more than ten vintages of the ‘Saggi’ going back to the 2004 vintage (https://owenbargreen.com/blog/2024/6/13/long-shadows-saggi-vertical-tasting). Needless to say it was a very special day spent with winemaker Gilles Nicault.

Saggi was first made with the 2003 vintage as a partnership with the famed Folonari family. The blend wasn’t released and ’04 was the first released vintage which was near equal parts Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon with some Syrah and Barbera. Today the wine is mainly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and some Syrah, which Nicault explains “brings the darkness to the color and extra layer of complexity, the spiciness. Sangiovese brings brightness but this Syrah elevates the wine and softness, richness to the palate.”

The new wine was spectacular and is drinking impeccably from this warm vintage. The 2021 ‘Saggi’ (OB, 95) is a dense and delicious treat to enjoy now. It is very well-structured and should cellar for at least another fifteen years to come. Learn more at https://longshadows.com/ and here is my review of the gorgeous 2021 ‘Saggi.’

2021 Long Shadows ‘Saggi’ Red Wine- The stunning 2021 Long Shadows ‘Saggi’ Red Wine is a harmonious and dense blend of 62% Sangiovese with 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Syrah. Decadent roasted figs and blackberries fill the palate alongside chocolate covered espresso bean and garrigue notes. The flavor density, weight and seamless texture really makes this sing its high octave. Drink 2025-2042- 95

Here is the gorgeous 2021 ‘RMS’ Sparkling Wine.

ROCO

June 19, 2025

Today we share the beautiful wines of ROCO, the brainchild of eminent winemaker Rollin Soles. Rollin comes off as extremely kind-hearted and has a wonderful sense of humor. I’ve been fortunate to have tasted his Argyle wines back to the late 1990s, as the ‘Extended Tirage’ wines that he made were some of the finest bubbles you will find in North America.

With the 2013 vintage Rollin was able to craft his first sparkling wine for his label, the ‘RMS.’ As a wine critic I was unabashedly licking my chops when I found out that Rollin was going to make aged sparkling wine. RMS wines are aged for 2.5 years before being disgorged. Rollin has had great success with his ROCO wines as he and his wife sold their winery to Santa Margarita winery earlier in 2022. There is very good reason why these giants of Italy took interest in this winery that has been consistently producing great wines.

I am enamored by the 2021 ROCO ’RMS’ Sparkling Wine (OB, 96) which is a totally stunning new wine with amazing richness and verve. Learn more about these incredible wines at rocowinery.com and here are my notes from the new release wines by ROCO.
