Last night I had the chance to sample some of the best area food and wine at Emory's on Silver Lake. Emory's boasts one of the best wine lists in the Everett area and they have been doing wine dinners for a few years with great success. Last night they showcased Pomum Cellars, a winery that specializes in growing Spanish varietals, such as Tempranillo and Graciano, utilizing Columbia Valley terroir.
Pomum Cellars was started by winemaker Javier Alonso, who is originally from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. Javier spoke last night about his journey to the US from Spain and how well Spanish varietals grow in Washington state. Pomum has another line called Idilico, that produces a very novel Albarino. The best wine I tried last night was their Bordeaux blend, which was sourced from some of the most famous vineyards in Washington, including DuBrul Vineyard and Elerding Vineyard. While the wines excelled last night, the food was even better. Particularly the slow roasted shortribs were melt in your mouth delicious.

2011 Pomum Tempranillo- Pomum is the biggest producer of Tempranillo in WA. 10% Grenache is added. Red cherry and plum on the nose. Palate is fruity with plum, raspberry and blueberry. Nice balance. Drink now. -89
2012 Idilico Riesling- Melon and cut grass on the nose. Medium acidity with pear, red delicious and cantaloupe with minerals. Tastes like Pinot Gris. Simplistic but tasty. Dry with .4 residual. Drink now. -87
2013 Idilico Albariño- Biggest producer of Albarino in WA. 1000 cases. Grapes in stainless steel. Lemon peel and fresh flowers on the nose. Palate has nice acidity with pear, starfruit and cantaloupe. Bright and novel but a little light in flavor. Drink now. -88
2010 Pomum Syrah- Columbia Valley fruit, 150 cases of this limited production wine. Nose has smoke, cinnamon, and anise. Palate has blackberry, black cherry, smoke and pomegranate. Nice weight and slightly sweet. Drink now. -89
2009 Pomum Shya Red- 71.1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.5% Cabernet Franc, 9.5% Merlot, 4.7% Petit Verdot and 4.2% Malbec From Dubrul, Sheridan, Elerding and other great Washington vineyards. Yakima valley fruit. Prune, blackberry and blueberry on the nose. Palate has blackberry, blueberry and anise with chocolate and coffee nuances. Slightly alcoholic but rich. Drink now or cellar for 1-2 years. -90
2011 Idilico Graciano Reserva- Red currant, red cherry and pepper on the nose. Palate has red currant, white pepper and raspberry flavors. Forward but tasty. Drink now. -89
