Dunn Vineyards

January 9, 2018

Located high atop Howell Mountain, and nestled among 150-year-old fir trees, you will find one of the great stops in Napa, Dunn Vineyards. Since 1979 the Dunn's have been producing Cabernet Sauvignon. Their total production is now at 4500 cases, split between the Howell Mountain and Napa Valley appellations. Winemaker and owner, Randy Dunn, is one of the iconic Napa winemakers. His winemaking style is typically more restrained than many others. His wines are structured and age worthy, regardless of vintages. I’ve had many of these bottling back ten plus years and I have found them to cellar remarkably well.

His new release comes from the highly anticipated 2014 vintage in Napa, a very hot vintage that produced powerful and intense wines. HIs new release was not only powerful but had a restrained quality that beautifully showed the terroir. The 2014 Dunn Vineyards ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 95) is a show-stopper that already is quite round but really needs another year or two in the bottle. If you do decide to pull the cork on this beauty, be sure to give this at least a two hour decant for it to be fully expressive. 2014 Dunn Vineyards ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2014 Dunn Vineyards ‘Napa Valley’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of purchased fruit from the Napa fruit and estate fruit from their Howell Mountain estate. The terroir of this wine is evident right out of the gate, as this reveals layered aromas of smoke, graphite and anise with damp earth and dark cherry cordial. The mouthfeel here is really intoxicating and plush. Rich flavors of red bell pepper, anise, cassis and red cherry show their stuff. Restrained and showing nice balance right now, the combination of terroir, vibrant acidity and dense flavors makes this a stunner. Drink 2018-2033- 95
