Seghesio
One of the premier wineries for Zinfandel in North America, the Seghesio family has been involved in wine for more than 120 years. In 1895 Italian immigrant and winemaker Edoardo Seghesio planted his first Zinfandel vineyard in what is now Seghesio’s Home Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Edoardo and his wife Angela survived Prohibition as one of roughly100 wineries to survive that era. Following prohibition, Seghesio sold bulk wine and it was only under 4th generation owner, Ted Seghesio when a focus on premium wines evolved. In a short period of time, Seghesio became synonomous with some of the highest quality and good Zinfandel available on the retail market. Their success lead to the 2011 sale of Seghesio Family Vineyards to Crimson Wine Group. Ted continues to serve as winemaker and crafts some outstanding wines.
A few weeks back I had the chance to try a 2011 Seghesio ‘Home Ranch’ Zinfandel. While the wine came from a less than heralded vintage, I was amazed by the combination of weight, poise and aging potential of the wine, as it was showing beautifully despite its age. The new releases by Seghesio were stunning, particularly the 2015 Seghesio ‘Old Vines’ Zinfandel (WWB, 93) which shows wonderful richness from a warm vintage in Sonoma.
