One of the fantastic boutique wineries in the Napa Valley, Harbison Estate was founded by Joe and Pat Harbison starting in 2005 when they purchased a small parcel of land on the east side of Oakville. For years the Harbison’s have been known for their famed wine cellar and they were known for their generous donations to regional auctions for three decades. Over time they created their own brand, JP Harbison, utilizing purchased fruit from the Oakville AVA and crafting wines from 1998-2007 under this label. Remarkably this label generated over $3 million dollars for children’s charities.
By 2005 the Harbison’s acquired this stunning property in the Oakville AVA, and planted Cabernet Sauvignon on uplifted allivial fan and red volcanic dirt which now produces roughly 75 cases of Harbison Estate Cabernet Sauvignon each vintage. The Harbison’s rely on the talents of Napa legend, Russell Bevan, for their winemaking. These wines are extremely hard to find in the retail market.
I recently had the chance to taste their new release wine coming from the 2015 vintage and were absolutely blown away. Their 2015 Harbison Estate ‘The Trail’ Cabernet Sauvignon (WWB, 97) is absolutely magical in its youth and shows off incredible Napa terroir and wonderful richness and texture. 2015 Harbison Estate ‘The Trail’ Cabernet Sauvignon- The 2015 Harbison Estate ‘The Trail’ Cabernet Sauvignon is a simply magical wine at this young stage in its development. The aromatics of the wine are quite powerful immediately, as the wine showcases mocha, tar and exotic spices with creme de cassis and shades of black tea all entering the fray.
