As part of our festive season coverage we share a boutique value producer of Champagne. Phillippe Prie is a small grower house which has 57 hectares in the Aube region with 30+ year old vines set on limestone (Kimmeridgian) and clay subsoils. Mostly planted to Pinot Noir (80%), quite unbelievably these wines retail in France for less than 20 euros. They produce a range of wines including a Brut and Brut Rose, as well as some older Champagnes that see more extensive disgorgement. For years I have loved the Cru wines as well from this house including the Cœur d’Ébène and Hybris vintage bottlings.
For years I have bought their ‘Brut Tradition’ which reflects one of the great values in Champagne. The wine is their entry level wine but comes from 30 year old vines, which is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir with the remainder Chardonnay. This wine as well as the other Philippe Prie wines are imported to the United States by Serge Dore Selections. Do not miss out on this outstanding value NV Philippe Prie ‘Brut Tradition’ Champagne (OB, 91) which is fresh and nicely textured with a smooth mouthfeel and mousse. This wine would make a killer aperitif for any holiday gathering. Learn more about this great small house at https://www.champagne-prie.com and here is my review of the new wine by Philippe Prie.
NV Philippe Prie ‘Brut Tradition’ Champagne- Given 8G/L dosage, the NV Philippe Prie ‘Brut Tradition’ Champagne is a downright killer blend oof 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay from 30 year old vines in the Aube region. Very soft upon entry this leads with shades of lime and lemon zest alongside green apple, salted French bread and loads of mouth-watering acidity. Enjoy in its bright youth. Drink 2022-2028- 91
