One of the great houses on the right bank, Chateau Troplong Mondot has an incredible history which dates back centuries. This property was originally part of the De Sèze estate in the 18th century, the vineyard situated on the crest of Mondot included what is today Chateau Pavie. It was in the mid1800s that the Modot family had purchased a good portion of their current estate and then in 1936 the property became owned by Alexandre Valette. For years Michel Rolland has served as winemaking consultant and famed Napa vintner, Aaron Pott, has formerly served as winemaker here before migrating to Napa to focus on his own wines. 2017 brought new ownership, as the company SCOR has been working on a renovation program which enhances vineyard biodiversity.
For years I have been enamored by these wines that show impressive salty and stony soil character with beautiful texture and finesse. For the price these also have been some of my favorite wines to purchase. I recently had the chance to revisit the incredible 2016 Troplong Mondot which came from an exquisite vintage. This 2016 Troplong Mondot (OB, 97) is absolutely singing at now the seven year mark. It is a complete wine with beautiful texture and black fruits, with a seamless mouthfeel. If you have never had wines from this house, they are a must-try. Learn more at https://www.troplong-mondot.com and here is my review of the 2016 Troplong Mondot.
2016 Chateau Troplong Mondot- The 2016 Troplong Mondot is a world-class effort that is already beautifully evolved at the seven year mark. Once on the nose this takes on beautiful potpourri notes alongside damp salty soils, cigar ash and dense dark fruits. The palate is soft and refined with a seamless texture. While big and bold, the drinking experience makes this extremely elegant, as underlying freshness and firm tannins frame everything brilliantly. Beautiful red and dark fruits combine with freshly tilled soils on the palate. Enjoy this beauty now and over the next twenty years to come. 89% Merlot with 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Drink 2023-2043- 97
